From the Manufacturer

Looking for the perfect combination of style and performance? The CS-V720 is just the answer! It not only delivers the high quality video your looking for from the progressive scan DVD player. Thanks to proprietary technologies like Onkyo’s Wide Range Amplifier Technology it’s also the ideal platform for today’s high-resolution formats such as DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD, as well as for regular CDs. And the high-quality 2-way bass reflex speakers ensure that you will hear every detail from your favorite music and movies.

The CS-V720 is packed with features, from the XM ready tuner* that gives you access to over 150 channels of digital quality audio to enhanced control of your iPod when used in conjunction with our optional DS-A1 Remote Interactive Dock. All of this technology is available packaged in a sleek looking, compact system that can be used in any room of the house or office. Audition one today to hear and see what you have been missing.
* Requires optional antenna and paid subscription.

Key technology Features and Supported FOrmats:
192 kHz/24bit AD Converters: Costly, extremely powerful digital-to-analog converters , that not only boast a dynamic range of 120 dB, they process information faster and are virtually resistant to clock jitter, to ensure the best possible performance from DVD-Audio, DVD-Video and audio CD.

DVD-Audio: Prepare for the concert of a lifetime! 5.1 channel DVD-Audio combines multichannel high-resolution audio with video, song lyrics and more. While discs that carry this logo must be played back in DVD-A equipped machines to unleash their full potential, many are compatible with conventional DVD-Video players as well.

JPG: JPG is a standard image format used in today's digital cameras and personal computers. DVD players that carry this logo are able to read CD-R/RWs that contain JPG image information and display slide shows on your television (such as recent vacations, family photos, etc.).

RI (Remote Interactive): With Onkyo’s exclusive RI (Remote Interactive) system capability, you can integrate and operate all compatible components through a single remote control. What’s more, RI capability enables you to simply connect the iPod® to your receiver through Onkyo’s RI Dock for the iPod (DS-A1). Your iPod effectively becomes another Onkyo component from which you can relish a fuller sound that just can’t be experienced through headphones. RI capability will also give you remote operability of your iPod for hands-off control over your digital music.

Plays WMA: This audio compression format from Microsoft® allows you to reduce the size of your audio files for storage on your computer’s hard drive or portable devices. This allows you to store many more songs than with uncompressed CD audio, using the same amount of disc space or memory. For example, a standard 650MB CD can hold more than 200 songs in WMA format. Various bitrates allow for higher or lower quality, depending on the desired sound quality of the final recording.

CD Video: This format, known as Video-CD (VCD), is commonly used for karaoke, to produce home movies, and slideshows, with menus and other special on-screen graphics.

MP3 Playback: This audio format achieves about a 10:1 compression over conventional CD audio. What does this mean? You can store many more songs using the same amount of space. For example, a standard 650MB CD can hold more than 200 songs in MP3 format. Various bitrates allow for higher or lower quality, depending on the desired sound quality of the final recording.

SACD: Are you ready for a brand new music listening experience? 5.1 channel Super Audio CD represents the best music has to offer. Direct Stream Digital™ recording technology is a drastic improvement over Compact Disc, both in technology and sound quality. Thanks to multichannel sound, it doesn't just appear as if the musicians are playing in your living room. It sounds as if you're transported from your living room into the original performance space.

WRAT (Wide Range Amp Technology): Imagine turning up the volume and filling your entertainment room with noise-free, impressively powerful, true-to-life sound. That's the benefit of Wide Range Amplifier Technology. Originally developed for our most expensive high-end amplifiers to handle the sonic demands of today's digital age, you'll now find WRAT even in our lowest-priced A/V receivers. The WRAT family of technologies includes a broader frequency range with lower noise entering the signal path – perfectly suited for new high resolution DVD-Audio and SACD formats.

XM Ready: The XM "Connect-and-Play," is a revolutionary technology platform designed to integrate XM into virtually any home or portable consumer electronics entertainment device. By matching XM Ready® audio systems with a simple, elegant antenna/receiver, getting XM becomes even easier for home audio listeners.

DTS Surround: DTS® is a discrete 5.1 channel audio format for movies and music. Unlike its Dolby® Digital counterpart, DTS uses less compression for its audio encoding.

Dolby Digital / Pro-Logic II: Dolby Digital is a discrete 5.1 channel audio format for movies and music. Pro-Logic II is the latest improvement on the original Pro-Logic standard. Pro-Logic II provides a full-range signal to the five main channels, in addition to a subwoofer channel. This creates a realistic surround environment from a two-channel source, such as CD, Tape, FM Radio, etc.

VLSC: Conventional D/A conversion methods reduce digital pulse noise at the conversion stage but can’t remove it completely. Previously only found on our high-end components, VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) employs a unique D/A conversion circuit to overcome this problem. Data is converted between sampling points and these points are joined with analog vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form. The result — a virtually noiseless, smooth analog signal based on the digital source to bring out even the most subtle of nuances in your music, movie soundtracks and even MP3s!

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful! wonderful!, May 3, 2006

This review is from: Onkyo CSV720S Executive Shelf System with Universal DVD (Electronics)
I own 2 of these because the first one was so good. Besides being able to play anything well (CD, SACD, DVD), the amplifier section generates a clean, cool 23W into 4 ohms, enough to drive the included speakers to very high levels, the baby speakers are fantastically good, the microfibre woofer-midrange really works. Give the speakers 100 hours or more to break in, because they are light, you may want to weight them down. I listen only to classical music and I switched to these speakers from Epos 11's, for those who know, I cannot say more about the quality. Just listened to Water Lily Acoustics' SACD of Shostakovich 7 from St Petersburg. All I can say is "wow". But Boulez and Cleveland doing Debussy from 1992 on good old PCM sounds almost as good. Who would have thought Onkyo could produce such a great miniature.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of bang for the buck, March 8, 2006
This review is from: Onkyo CSV720S Executive Shelf System with Universal DVD (Electronics)
You really can't compare this system to more expensive two speaker systems. For one the price is nearly a quarter of them.

However this system fits a very nice nitch. It offers excellent sound quality for a smaller space. And it will play just about anything that comes on a disc. If you don't need a lot of power or 5.1 surround, but you're looking for a quality system this will fit your needs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Worst ever, August 17, 2007

DJP "DJP" (Philly, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Onkyo CSV720S Executive Shelf System with Universal DVD (Electronics)
I got this system in 4/07 - and it worked fine for 3 or 4 weeks. Then, it began turning itself off in the middle of DVD's or even iPod playback, resetting the clock/time and all other settings. At its worst, it would turn off about every 8 to 10 minutes. It spent over 6 weeks in the repair shop under warranty service (about 1/3 of the time that I've owned it), and within 20 minutes of getting it back home, it had the same exact problem. I placed several calls to Onkyo, spent about 20-30 minutes on hold with each call, spoke with people named Don, Ray, and Felicia in their Parts & Service department, and the universal response was to continue to bring it back to the shop, despite the fact that it's a brand new system. In the end, I was told that Onkyo's policy is to repair it approximately 3 times before they will consider an item exchange. Considering that it nearly never worked properly, that it's been in repair for over 1-1/2 months, and that Onkyo thinks this is acceptable, seems unreasonable. The system, if it worked, would be great - but it doesn't, and the "customer service" was among the most uncaring experiences I've had. It seems that Onkyo cares more about its own convenience than the satisfaction of its customers.
