Product Description

Owners of Onkyo A/V receivers and stereo amplifiers -particularly older units that lack a USB or ethernet port - can now enjoy the convenience of wireless audio streaming with the DS-A5 iPod/iPhone/iPad Dock. The DS-A5 - which connects to your system via analog or digital audio outputs - features AirPlay for streaming over the home network. Just select an audio or video file , touch the AirPlay icon, and the dock powers up your system and commences playback. Or, with a few clicks of the mouse , you can send music wirelessly from your computer’s iTunes library to the DS-A5 for playback over your hi-fi or home theater. Superior sound quality is assured when using the digital audio output, which transports the signal directly to your Onkyo receiver’s audiophile-grade Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs). A composite video output enables movie and photo playback from iOS device on your TV, while an RI connection centralizes control of your system into one main remote. With the DS-A5, you can dock your iPod, iPhone, or iPad anytime for a recharge, or continue using it anywhere in the house while streaming your favorite music at the same time .

What we have here is a product that fails to excel at nearly every task you assign to it. And it does so at twice the price of Apple's offerings.

There's some good points about it too - I'll cover the pros and cons of the unit:

Pros:
1. It's an iPad dock.
2. It will charge an iPad.
3. It will allow remote control of the iPad (limited) via the Onkyo RI protocol with the Onkyo remote or via the handheld remote included with the unit.
4. The big pro: If you have an old receiver - specifically one that predates HDMI, this will give you video playback from the iPad, but I am pretty sure DRM'd content will not play.
5. You can plug in an iPad with an Apple case on.
6. Compatible with any receiver, not just Onkyo.

Cons:
1. The flexible dock port is an older 30-pin port, so it does not work with newer devices. It also points in any direction but the direction you need to smoothly plug it in, causing a lot of fiddling and fuss to get the iPad connected (in or out of the case).
2. I was greeted with "This device not compatible with iPad" when I plugged in my iPad. Not a promising sign for an iPad dock.
3. It's an "AirPlay" dock. No it isn't. It is an "AirMusic" dock. Big difference. This dock only streams music.
4. Setup is sort of clunky, but easy enough if you go through the instructions.
5. Apple Airport Express and Apple TV are more capable for playback purposes, and either one does so for half the MSRP of this unit. The AP Express is great for music-only and the ATV is great for streaming music or video.
6. Video playback is limited to composite - yes composite - only. No HDMI or component output.
7. Remote is tiny and annoying.

I've been excited about this piece of gear since I first read about in in September. We were going to purchase a new receiver mainly to get the airplay feature but this little device does the job very well and updated our Onkyo. Setup was simple and it works great. I can now play music from my ipad through the audio system no matter where it is in the house. I highly recommend the DS-A5 to bring some higher tech to an older piece of gear.

I have had this for over four months now;
If you have an older analog only audio system or a newer system with a quality DAC this can fill most of your audio needs.
Pros
Universal charger for 30 pin products
Wired or wireless Airplay audio streaming with digital and analog outputs
Digital (bypass the cheap audio processor in your device) or analog audio output from your docked device

Cons (IF YOU'RE PICKY)
Takes 2-3 times to get aquatinted with the dock, the good news it accommodates all my I-devices in a protective case or not

For the "apple products only" buyers you need to spend $159 and get two (2) devices (Airport or AppleTV and audio docking station) to get unexceptional audio performance.

Hey Apple and your Dock.....Talk about frustrating.....half the time my device displays "this device is not compatible"

Haven't seen this with Onkyo's

overal construction well, nice as dock even it does not on screen control from the video output... nice to have digital output for my high end amp, very sharp and detailed sound. highest quality sound out of my ipod.

the bad. The network connection is very poor, the Airplay works poorly, can only stay 1 min. or so... then goes away. I even tried connecting using the ethernet cable and does not work either... this might have been a deffective unti. Having had a good Airplay connection this would 5 star... !!

This is a must have addition to an Onkyo that doesn't have AirPlay built in. It allows me to stream my iTunes library and control playback with an attached iOS device. Only complaint is that the price is higher than what I expected for a dock and a feature that really should have been built in, but I'm pleased overall.

When I learned that Airplay uses lossless encoding to digitally transmit it's music signal, I figured i would try to incorporate Airplay into a client's $20k Audiophile Sitting Room.
Thanks to this dock having a true digital output, I could use the Optical output and run it into a HiFi D/A converter. I chose the Parasound ZDAC as it has Optical in and Balanced XLR out.
Works great! You can integrate it to your existing home wireless or wired network, OR, you can pair it with an iPhone or whatever directly.
