5.0 out of 5 stars Good upscaling performance, good value
This is a good choice for an SD DVD player. It will upscale to 1080p and does so pretty well. It's a notch below my Oppo 983H, but considering it costs far less than the Oppo, the performance is well worth the cost.

The build quality is solid, as is typical with Onkyo products. Installation is a snap (basically, just plug in the HDMI cable). The HDMI cable...

1.0 out of 5 stars Defective Onkyo DV-SP406B Defective - Returning this item
I purchased this unit based upon good reviews. However, the picture generated from this DVD player was distorted even in the set up mode (no disk inserted). No DVD (I tried several) would load with good video. All pictures were scrambled. The connections were double check for correctness. I assume I received a defective unit and am returning it ASAP for a refund.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good upscaling performance, good value, December 14, 2008

This review is from: Onkyo DV-SP406B Single Disc DVD Player (Black) (Electronics)

The HDMI cable is not included (get one from monoprice at a very reasonable cost). Easy to use menu system, and the disks load quickly.

The only downside is the remote, which is small and has poorly marked buttons. But, it has volume and mute control for Onkyo receivers, so it's a good match should you have that brand.

I compared it against several players from Sony, Toshiba and Phillips. The Phillips felt "cheap" to me (but were the lowest priced units). The Sony and Toshiba were more substantial in build quality, but I went with the Onkyo based upon past experience with the brand and the fact that this will be hooked to an Onkyo receiver.

It's more resistant to skips and hangs than my older Sony, a big issue if you rent disks. It's not as capable as the Oppo in dealing with damaged disks, but again, you're paying a lot less for this.

So far I've found this to be an excellent value and a strong performer.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT upconverting DVD player!, November 30, 2008
This review is from: Onkyo DV-SP406B Single Disc DVD Player (Black) (Electronics)
I have had Sony, Toshiba and Pioneer up-converting DVD players and finally found what is considered "Best of the Best"...and rightfully so...the Oppo 983H. With out a doubt, the Oppo 983H is king! Which now resides in the living room. Still, it is a bit pricey and I continued to search for a good, but relatively lower cost player for the den. At last, found the ONKYO DV-SP406 on Amazon a couple months ago and it has performed superbly! Well built and the up-converting to 1080P is excellent! For about a quarter of the cost of my Oppo....I'm very-very pleased! As good as the Oppo - no, but close enough for the price. Far better than the Sony, Toshiba or Pioneer. So much so, that I just purchased another DV-SP406 for the bedroom and will put the Toshiba XDE in the guest room. As a note...the Sony died after 5 months, the Toshiba XDE resides in the bedroom...at least for a couple more days and I returned the Pioneer to Best Buys after a week. I highly recommend the Onkyo DV-SP406 to anyone looking for a well built excellent up-converting DVD player around the cost of $100. $111.97 from Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Onkyo DV-SP406B Upscaling DVD Player, December 28, 2009
By

This review is from: Onkyo DV-SP406B Single Disc DVD Player (Black) (Electronics)
I bought this Onkyo DV-SP406B upscaling DVD player to replace an aging Toshiba DVD player which wouldn't play some disks correctly, especially double-sided.
I was not interested in BlueRay - they cost too much and many other reviewers have said that their DVDs look better on their upscaling DVD players than on their brand new BlueRay player. And we have large DVD collection.

I also have an Onkyo receiver so it seemed advantageous to get a matching DVD player as there are a few receiver controls on the DVD remote (on/off, muting, volume, and input). We are very happy with this player. It seems to be well built as expected from Onkyo. I know, we've only had it for two months, but we use it a lot. The first day I was freaked out because it displayed sort of green overcast images on out Pioneer HDTV. But, it turned out that the default HDMI input setting on the Pioneer was not set correctly. No fault of Onkyo. Once I got out the Pioneer manual and learned how to change the HDMI input setting to "optimum", the picture looked great.

Others have complained about the remote. I don't know why. I like it. It is lightweight and has a good layout of often used buttons like stop/play/pause/etc.

This player has not stalled or rejected any disk that I have put in it. It'll even play my mp3 video files. Amazing! I highly recommend this player. But, if you have some reason to not get this one, my second choice would have been a Toshiba XD-E500.

We do have a couple of small complaints. It is sort of slow performing simple tasks like on/off and eject. Once you get the disk playing though - no issues. The other is the strange (or just different) way you have to grab onto the disk to remove it. There are only two little slots near the front to insert your thumb or finger into to get "under" the disk. Like other reviewers have said, not a dealer killer but sort of annoying.

I used the free shipping options at Amazon.com and received this in about a week. (This is typical excellent service/shipping from Amazon) I also ordered an AmazonBasics HDMI cable from Amazon. Seems like better quality material than most generic cables. Hope this helps you somehow in your decision to get a new player.

One last note to remember:
You must use a HDMI cable to get upscaling. Upscaling is not available using component cables. (Actually, I think that is true with any upscaling DVD player)

The Onkyo Dv-Sp406 was easy to install, slim design works great in my entertainment center. Puts a great picture to my 50" plasma. Works seamlessly with my Onkyo home theater.

The Onkyo DVD player has really given impressive service so far. We were even able to watch some DVDs that our other, cheaper players could not play. This is an excellent product that is well worth the money it costs. No more $29.99 cheapies for me!

Everything seems to be fine, the only complaint I have is that I'm afraid of breaking the DVD door that comes out, seems pretty flimsy.

4.0 out of 5 stars New Tray Please, June 20, 2009

Only complaint I have, which is minor, is the way the disc tray is designed. Could be made differently for easier removal of disc. This is very minor, no biggie. What has started to annoy me is the slow "boot up" time (when you turn the power on and wait to insert disc).

3.0 out of 5 stars There is a reason it's on sale, October 18, 2010

This review is from: Onkyo DV-SP406B Single Disc DVD Player (Black) (Electronics)
This is an OK player. Simple and plays everything I've thrown at it including Australian Format DVD that would not play on my Sony. The tray is designed poorly and makes getting disks out of it with my big mits difficult. You turn it on and have to wait to press the open button until it boots which takes 5-10 seconds. Sometimes for no reason it just will not play and has to be shut off to get it to operate correctly. It is typical Onkyo which means it's good but this one has some flaws and does work like my other Onkyo equipment. It was cheap which makes the few hicups worth it but I'd have paid more for closer to perfection.

This is one of the better dvd players out there for the money. Surprisingly, the remote is too small. I'd velcro it to the TV so it doesn't get lost or thrown out with the tv guide.
