5.0 out of 5 stars Onkyo DVCP704 reveiw
Onkyo's HDMI player has fulfilled its billing. I spent a lot of time reviewing the various HD DVD players on the market and narrowed it down to 3 products: Onkyo's DVCP704, Sony's Blu-ray and Pioneer's HD DVD player. Realizing that the bottowm line was a DVD to output at least 1080i to my 60" Sony 1080p rear-projection LCD TV and it had to have HDMI output jacks - it was...

I recently purchased an Onkyo TX-SR674 A/V Receiver and added the DVCP704 DVD player to have a matching set. I should have checked dimensions ahead of time because the 704 is quite a bit deeper (at 17") than my other components - probably due to the 6-disk changer - and hangs out of my TV stand about an inch. Not a big deal, but something to consider. Beyond the size issue, I was disappointed to discover the 704 couldn't play a CD-Video disk or SACD audio disks. For the price, the 704 seems to have limited features. Since this purchase I have seen single-disk, HDMI compatible players that support more formats at half the price. Overall, DVDs perform well and look great when connected via the HDMI interface at 1080i. The setup screen and background seem to be at a very low resolution, but you really don't spend much time looking at them.

The 674 A/V receiver and 704 DVD look good together, but the 704 is nowhere near on par with the 674.

Update (2/17/07) Like the other reviewer above, I have also noticed some "stuttering" at chapter changes. Just enough to be noticable, but not quite worth returning.

Onkyo's HDMI player has fulfilled its billing. I spent a lot of time reviewing the various HD DVD players on the market and narrowed it down to 3 products: Onkyo's DVCP704, Sony's Blu-ray and Pioneer's HD DVD player. Realizing that the bottowm line was a DVD to output at least 1080i to my 60" Sony 1080p rear-projection LCD TV and it had to have HDMI output jacks - it was a "no-brainer". I didn't want to get involved in the HD vs Blu-ray fiasco, and I certainly didn't want to spend over $250 on this piece of equipment that might change in 2-3 years. I did want to be able to enjoy my CDs on it, so the combo unit offered by Onkyo fit the bill. In addition, I had recently purchased the Onkyo TX-S04 receiver, so having the components from the same company was a bonus.

I tested the HD output at all resolution options by watching 2 movies that I consider have a lot of detail: Gladiator and Star Wars III. I was blown away by the clarity and sharpness of these movies...at one point I could have frozen the picture to count OB's fine hairs on his face (not to mention his acne problem on camera) that's how clear and sharp the picture was..and these movies were not in HD! Also, the music CD player mode did not disappoint. Remote control use was straightforward and operational buttons felt solid.

In summary, I was pleased with my purchase and at the price I paid ($170), it was a REAL BARGAIN!

I bought the Onkyo 6 Disc changer to replace an older model Onkyo 6 disc changer that I had been using for almost 9 years.

First off let me tell you that the ability to change out discs while another is playing is entirely underated. I love this capability and to be honest it is the reason I was willing to spend a little more for this versus a Sony or Samsung. Also, the difference between five and six discs may seem nominal, but is really nice if you happen to watch complete seasons of TV shows, (something I do when I am home). It is also nice just to be able to keep several discs available for viewing.

The upconverting features of this player are really nice. Not that I would know wether it is better on this player versus any of the others, lets face it I am replacing a player that is almost ten years old!! The audio capabilities of this player are fairly standard, although I know some people have complained about it not sounding as good as others - I haven't noticed any problems.

One thing I can't really comment on just yet is the HDMI capability. I am still trying to find the perfect 42-46 inch LCD for my home theatre. I will update this as soon as I get the opportunity to test it out a little bit.

The only reason that I gave the player four stars is that it is a little pricey compared to similar players, if I could give it 4 and a half I would. But remember that you get the ability to swap during play and that extra disc slot. And, lets be honest, you could be spending $400-500+ for a Denon, Yamaha or any of the higher end players, and still only have five slots.

First, I hate when people report a low rating on a product due to getting a bad product. This happens in life, deal with it and move on. It is more important how the company fixes the error, than an isolated problem. I bought a Honda once that had a bad seal on the windshield, but I kept it despite such a "horrible" mistake and eight years later the car is still doing great. This product is solid in every way. The key in buying this product is usage. If you like the 6 disc play style this is for you. Please note it is deeper than most players, so actually measure your shelf and add an inch or two for wiring. If you are looking for super HD or BluRay and single disc action, then obviously you should move on. For about the same price, you can get the Sony 5 dics changer, which is also another nice product, have 2 of them in my home. Product also has a nice sharp look to it, and if you like blue background lights, you will like the night light built into the front.

2.0 out of 5 stars Flawed DVD Playback, January 10, 2007
This review is from: Onkyo 6 Disc HDMI Player DVCP704 (Electronics)
Picture looked great via HDMI, but unfortunately there was a major problem during DVD movie playback. DVD movies would frequently stutter at chapter changes. This was a show stopper for me and I returned it. Perhaps my issue was specific to my setup (HDMI), a defective unit, or something else. However, I went and got the Panasonic single disk HDMI player (S52?) and all is well (except no 6 disc changer). Onkyo tech support was not much help either (They basically told me to return it). Save yourself the return shipping costs and buy the Panasonic player.

I bought this changer a few weeks ago to consolidate an old 5 disc changer and dvd player. I wanted a universal player (CD, DVD +/-R, MP3,etc), but with the same random multi-disc playback my old changer had given me for many years. This model does these two things very well. I have digital audio out to my receiver and HDMI audio/video to my flat screen TV - both work flawlessly. A single "Party mode" button randomly shuffles tracks and discs for all CD or MP3 discs currently loaded.

The only criticisms I have are the relatively slow changer tray and onscreen menu. The changer tray, while not bad, is about twice as slow as my 14 year old Technics 5 disc CD changer at openning and skipping discs. The on-screen menu (for set-up and MP3 disc navigation) has clunky graphics and is a little hard to navigate in my opinion. It does the job however. The front LED panel does not display artist or track info while playing MP3 or WMA discs.

Another reviewer disliked the remote. I happen to think that it is excellent - much better than the other Panasonic/Technics ones I have which are loaded with tiny buttons and no rational organization.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good DVD and CD Player, May 24, 2007

The DVCP704 works well. Unfortunately, I do not yet have have an HDTV with which to test the HDMI upconversion. It plays data DVDs containing MP3s as well as MP3 CDs, but it only reads ID3v1 tags or a version of ID3v2 that many of my MP3s do not contain. Also, the on-screen listing of tracks/MP3s could be more descriptive or customizable, but what it has suffices.

5.0 out of 5 stars Onkyo DVD Changer, September 1, 2007
This review is from: Onkyo 6 Disc HDMI Player DVCP704 (Electronics)
I haven't had this DVD player very long but it works great. I use it more for music than DVD's but it does a great job with both. I made up a CD with 157 MP3 songs on it and it played perfectly. I would definately buy Onkyo products in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best dvd changers, January 25, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Onkyo 6 Disc HDMI Player DVCP704 (Electronics)
I purchased this item about a month ago because I wanted a 720p upconvert 6-disc changer. This dvd player looks great and comes with a good remote for a dvd player. It is easy to maneuver through the menus as well. In terms of picture, there is not any noise or strange artifacts. Overall it looks great on my Pioneer plasma. The changer is a tad slow to load, but convienetly resumes play at the same location even if you've had the player off for a day or two. I do not however, have anything to compare this player to. I may look into the Denon 1930ci just to get an idea of how it performs by comparison.
