Product Description

Onkyo is known for producing among the world's best audio components for home theater and hi fi listening. Now you can take that component quality sound everywhere with a pair of our ES FC300 On Ear Headphones. Built to deliver maximum fidelity at a realistic price, these stylish aluminum encased headphones feature 40 mm (19/16) titanium drivers backed by ported sub chambers to optimize bass response. Onkyo's technical team spent countless hours tuning the drivers to deliver uncommonly clear, open, and natural sound from compressed or lossless formats. Premium audio doesn't come at the expense of poor stability. Folding ear cups, detachable connectors, and exceptionally tough construction make the ES FC300s ideal for the daily commute. And you won't spend half the journey sorting out a mess of cable: our flat elastomeric designer exists knots and tangles. An adjustable padded headband and leatherette ear pads make extended listening sessions comfortable. Which is great, because with this level of audio performance, you'll be finding any excuse to put them on.

From the Manufacturer

ES-FC300 On-Ear Headhones

Sleek Style & Stellar Audio
Everywhere You Go

Take Onkyo's high quality audio everywhere you go with a pair of ES-FC300 On-Ear Headphones. Built to deliver maximum fidelity at a realistic price, these stylish aluminum-encased headphones have a lot to offer anyone who loves music.

Detachable Tangle-Free Cable

Flat Elastomer Cable

The ES-FC300 incorporates a flat elastomer cable that keeps the core insulaed from noisy knocks and bumps and resists tangling when not in use.

Detachable connectors mean you can swap out the colors depending on your mood or style, or replace the cable should it become damaged.

Well-Defined, Clear Sound

Wide-Range Titanium Drivers

Onkyo on-ear headphones feature 40 mm (1 9/16") full-range titanium drivers encased in aluminum. Designed to reproduce a wide frequency spectrum, they are noted for crisp and detailed performance in the mid to high ranges.

Tuned to give full voice to all types of music, the drivers faithfully recreate compressed audio formats and are robustly sensitive to lossless and 192/24 playback.

Deep, Powerful Bass

Dual Chamber Construction

Bass response isn't a matter of quantity, but quality. You don't want "boomy" bass, which blurs the audio image. You DO want headphones that fully control low frequencies and add weight and dynamism to all types of music.

Onkyo's on-ear headphones do that, and they have perfect dynamic balance, with dual chambers behind the driver to optimize bass response. Careful tuning and rigid construction tame resonance and ensures a solid foundation of well-muscled bass at all volume levels.

Built for Portability

Solid Construction

Folding earcups, detachable connectors, and exceptionally tough construction make the ES-HF300s ideal for the daily commute.

Gold-plated connectors preserve signal integrity and resist the effects of corrosion.

Carrying case included.

Comfortable for Long Listening Sessions

Padded, Adjustable Headband & Leatherette Earpads

Soft leatherette earpads seal against ambient noise and minimize sound leakage.

Combined with a padded, adjustable headband, Onkyo on-ear headphones are comfortable to wear for hours at a time. Keep it rocking.

Customer Reviews

These headphones are super comfy and have pretty good sound quality.

Clear, crisp highs, an amazing detailed, low and punchy bass and only slightly recessed kids give this headphone a fun signature that you can listen to for ours.

Where the cables attach to the cup sticks out and consequentially if you turn your head to look over your shoulder you may bump against the connectors.

The Onkyo ES-FC300(R)is a black body (frame) set of headphones with a red cable. this is the same pair of headphones as Onkyo's FC300, only with an allegedly lesser performance cord that is not oxygen free. if you want to read what I think of this difference, you can skip to the last two paragraphs of this review. For now, I will discuss the similarities between the two models, FC and HF.

Onkyo's first venture into the modern headphone market is a fairly conservative one. Onkyo developed a mid-priced model with few innovative features, and one that lacks modern amenities such as a single cup wiring, an inline volume / pause / microphone unit in the cord, and multiple cords supplied. However, Onkyo achieved a high value package that sounds better than it's price would indicate, and one that probably will please both audiophiles and mainstream headphone users.

First, build quality. The HF/FC series are built very similarly, made mostly of plastic with comfy pleather on-ear cushions. The Onkyos do have aluminum driver housings, which is a nice upscale touch. I personally felt the comfort factor was high for an on-ear, superior to the Sennheiser HD25s, and about equal to the ATH ESW9A. The Onkyos are somewhat larger than both of the above mentioned headphones, and the grip on the head is somewhere in between the Senns and the ATH as well. This level of grip to me is a good thing, as the phones remain reasonably stable on your head (unlike the ESW9s), and are also less unpleasant for a long listening term than the HD25s). A circumaural set of phones (fully surrounding the ear) will be more comfy for most users, but the supra-aural Onkyos will be good for most listeners for at least 90-120 mins of consecutive listening before any discomfort is noted.

The Onkyo ES-FC300 Headphones represent EXTREME value. I have directly compared them to more expensive offerings from both Sony's Sony MDR-1R Premium Over The Head Headphone, Black and Sony MDR-X10/RED X Headphones with 50mm Diaphragms and found the Onkyo's to be sonically in the ball park with both. Same goes for build quality although the Onkyo soft carrying bag offers less protection than Sony gives you with their models.

I am somewhat of a headphone connoisseur of sorts with my HifiMan Electronics HE-500 Planar Magnetic Over-Ear Headphones (Black) being my go to cans. I look upon these Onkyo's as a nice portable pair I can use with my laptop or portable music player. They look really good and have better than average build quality. They seemed a bit smaller to me than their picture suggests.

These are ON EAR cans and as such MAY eventually prove to be a bit uncomfortable over time. Comfort generally is good and even my freakishly oversized head was a good fit. Both the ear pads and headband feel fine and seem well made enough to withstand heavy use. The cables are both detachable and replaceable , being much more easier to manage than my HiFiMan stock cable. You can upgrade the cable or buy the next model up. (which is this pair with upgraded cables)

Sonically the mids sit very well (after at least a good 50 hour burn-in period) and the highs are more shimmering than veiled. Low end is not stellar but is not too weak either. In fact, I prefer the sonic presentation of the Onyko's to the much more expensive Munitio PRO40 High-Performance Headphones, Gold , with their over hyped low end. They are very easy to drive from any audio output but connecting to a dedicated headphone amp will allow these cans to fully shine.

Excellent quality headphones. They are pricey, however not as pricey as some other headphones on the market. The sound is amazing. Clear and crisp. Your ears do not hurt or get tired of using them. They are lightweight, so you can forget you have them on. Bass is rich but not overpowering. Only complaint is that I wish the cord was longer.

I had high hopes for these headphones -- but the bottom line is they don't fit my head too well and aren't as adjustable as I'd like.

While they're not meant to be circumaural headphones that fully cover your ears, they are bigger than some supra-aural headphones that rest on your ear. The pressure isn't hard on the ears, but they don't push hard enough to provide decent isolation from outside noise. Perhaps because I have a slightly larger head this is an issue, but I find Sennheiser and Beyerdynamic German headphones to fit much better. The cups do rotate for storage, but aren't vertically flexible enough to remain comfortably on my ear. Nonetheless, they don't cause any pain for me at any time, but I just don't feel I'm getting the best seal and therefore diminished sound from the headphones.

Personally, the flat cable leaves a bit to be desired -- it can be "noisy" when moving across clothing (despite advertised as "low noise"), and when plugged into my iPhone, the flat plug can get in the way of the Lightning plug and electrical noise is generated when you move it around. However, you can purchase different cables from Onkyo. I'd also prefer the cable to be attached to one ear rather than both. Given this is a portable headphone, I'm also disappointed there are no control buttons or microphone built-in, but perhaps Onkyo is going for a more audiophile headphone here where these features may not be wanted for fear of adding noise.

These do shine with sound quality though at this medium-to-high price point for portable headphones. The ear cup material is comfortable. They aren't perfectly balanced (the bass does come out at times) but is not overpowering. Mids and highs are clear. A nice storage bag is included but they're still large to carry around. They do appear to be built well and I like the feel of the aluminum ear cups. I just can't get them to fit well on my head.
