Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The Onkyo HT-S3200 is the Fully Equipped Home Theater for Your Entertainment, Music and Gaming Needs

Progress is constant with Onkyo packaged home theater. That's just what you'll find with the HT-S3200 5.1-channel receiver/speaker package, which offers more breakthrough technology than ever before at the entry level. With HDMI™ pass-thru for high-definition video, this is a convenient solution that allows you to enjoy Blu-Ray Disc, DVD, broadcast, and gaming sources.

Includes a suite of Audyssey Technologies

You can partner this package with whichever display suits your budget and achieve truly performance-driven home theater. Enjoy the benefits of tailored audio performance via a full suite of Audssey technologies, including Audyssey EQ™, Audyssey Dynamic EQ™, and Audyssey Dynamic Volume™. You can even integrate an iPod® or MP3 player via a front-panel input, or take advantage of Onkyo's new DSP modes for gaming: Rock, Sports, Action, or Role Playing Game (RPG).

HDMI™ Pass-Thru for Connecting up to Three Video Sources for Output to a High-Definition Display

The HT-S3200 takes up to three HDMI video inputs from sources such as Blu-Ray Disc players, DVD players, gaming consoles, and set-top boxes, and delivers the output to a compatible high-definition display. Video is passed in its native resolution--right up to 1080p--from Blu-Ray Disc, PlayStation® games, or HD broadcasts.

A Suite of Audyssey Technologies for the Ideal Listening Environment

The HT-S3200 has three Audyssey technologies to help create the most suitable listening environment for your home. The first is Audyssey 2EQ™ for Room Acoustic Correction. The HT-S3200 uses Audyssey 2EQ to counter distortion created by walls, furniture, and other objects. This technology detects speaker distance, and then sets levels, delays, and crossovers, while also measuring room acoustics. Compared to one-position room correction systems, Audyssey 2EQ covers a much wider listening area. Moreover, it corrects problems in both frequency response and time domain (where most of the problems lie) across the entire listening area. The results are immediately obvious--a clear, well-balanced, and natural sound.

The second is Audyssey Dynamic Volume™ control. This technology allows you to set the volume level that you want and keep it there, without having to constantly adjust it. By anticipating sudden spikes and dips in the audio soundtrack and compensating for them in real time, Audyssey Dynamic Volume ensures consistent volume levels, regardless of the content you're enjoying. Thanks to Audyssey Dynamic Volume, quiet dialogue is easier to pick up, loud passages retain their impact, and commercials are less intrusive.

The HT-S3200 has three Audyssey technologies
The third is Audyssey Dynamic EQ™ for Loudness Correction. In professional sound studios, music and movies are recorded at reference levels far louder than what is typical for home listening. As a result, when you play audio content at a low volume on a standard home theater receiver, the bass disappears, voices change in timbre, and the surround soundstage loses definition. To counteract this audio deterioration, Audyssey Dynamic EQ continuously adjusts frequency response and the surround soundstage loses definition. To counteract this audio deterioration, Audyssey Dynamic EQ continuously adjusts frequency response and surround levels to produce the ideal balance for a given volume level.

Four Game Modes for More Thrilling Action

A new addition to Onkyo home theater, these four gaming modes create an experience with more realism and impact. You can select from Rock, Sports, Action, or Role Playing Game (RPG) modes to match your gaming content.

Convenient Front Panel Audio Input for Portable Devices

You can connect an iPod® or other MP3 player to the A/V receiver's front panel for playback. Your player's compressed digital music files receive a quality boost thanks to the HT-S3200's Music Optimizer technology.

Music Optimizer™ to Support Compressed Digital Music Files

While MP3 or AAC files may sound fine on a portable digital player, the limitations of these compressed files can be exposed when played back through a home entertainment system. Onkyo has designed onboard Music Optimizer technology to improve the quality of the compressed audio signals. Compressed music loses a substantial amount of bit information at higher frequencies, so the Music Optimizer technology works to overcome this limitation and enhance audio quality.

The HT-S3200 includes front, center, surround and subwoofer speakers

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Entry Level System, June 4, 2009
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S3200 5.1-Channel Home Entertainment Receiver/Speaker Package (Electronics)
OK, first off, every previous reviewer did not research before buying the unit. "HDMI pass-through means" that the HDMI only produces video, not sound. Therefore, this system (if you are using HDMI) will transfer the video through an HDMI cable and the audio through a separate optical or coaxial cable.

That being said, the unit works flawlessly. I have used it for about 3 weeks and it is everything i expected. The speakers are a piano black, which match my Samsung DLP perfectly.

Set-up was very easy, though you may consider changing the included speaker wire (especially considering that the speaker wire for the rear speakers won't even reach). Another plus of the set-up was that the menu for the receiver is on the receiver's lcd itself, not shown on the tv.

If you are planning on using HDMI, and don't mind using optical or coax audio, this system can't be beat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet sound, October 11, 2009
By
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S3200 5.1-Channel Home Entertainment Receiver/Speaker Package (Electronics)
Bought this system from NewEgg, so hopefully my comments still apply.
Positives:
- Sounds beautiful
- Easy setup. The receiver, speakers and the entire wires are all color coded. No thinking involved at all, just match them up.
- Intuitive menus and controls. Simple to adjust the amount of bass, and switch between surround sound and music modes. All the functionality is accessible from the buttons on the receiver and the remote control.
- Large one line display is clear and can be read from afar.
- Receiver supports 7.1 if you ever want to get more speakers.

Negatives:
- Most connections are useless. HDMI passthrough defeats the purpose of making the Onkyo receiver the main hub of cables. Instead, I hook up all my systems to my TV using HDMI cables, and run one optical audio cable from my TV output to the receiver.
- Cables are short. Specs from the manual are: 11 ft (front), 10 ft (center), 13 ft(subwoofer), 26 ft(surround)
- Cables are very brightly colored. Its a little weird having bright red, blue, purple and green wires running all over the room.

All the shortfalls can be rectified by getting your own cables and wires. The rest of the system works perfectly and sounds great.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Enough!, September 14, 2009
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S3200 5.1-Channel Home Entertainment Receiver/Speaker Package (Electronics)
Pros:
- Good price for the features, tons of inputs
- highly configurable audio settings such as speaker levels, distance and size, and what inputs activate with which button press (eg, can route to "optical input 1" with press of "cd" or "dvd" or whatever you choose in setup)
- can use 3rd party speakers
- good center channel separation (clear dialogue on DVDs and TV)
- clearly displays audio type (Dolby PL II, etc) it's detected. Works great with my PS3; you see it switch over when a Dolby enabled game starts up
- low bit rate music (mp3, etc) optimization seems to work

Cons:
- HDMI passthrough means separately wiring audio, so you run out of optical inputs quick
- the many EQ presets are mysterious and seem to have little impact on the sound
- nighttime mode (lower bass?) only available in some inputs
- must hit the "receiver" button to access full audio options
- for all the cusomizeable features, very limited manual EQ choices (bass, treble)
- mediocre music performance overall

Overall, excellent value for the price. A little stronger on the TV/Movie side than for music listening, but I can't crank this thing up in my crowded apartment building, so that could be a factor.
