5.0 out of 5 stars Great Purchase
I wasn't really sure what to expect with the S5400. I hadn't had a surround sound setup in awhile, and my last home theater in a box was underwhelming, but I had heard good things about the S5300 and when I went to purchase one, I saw that a newer version had been released. From what I understand the S5400 is pretty much the same as the S5300 with the added benefit of the...

1.0 out of 5 stars Good sound when it worked
I received this product as a replacement for my Onkyo HT-S5300 system which worked perfectly. Upon receipt I noticed some differencs in the receiver versus the HT-S5300 reveiver even though Onkyo claimed they are the same. The sound was amazing and the Audessay speaker setup is a must have. However, as seen on other forums with Onkyo receivers, the HDMI input ports did...

5.0 out of 5 stars 9 0f ten,
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1-Channel Home Theater System (Electronics)I bought the Onkyo-s5400 surround last month off amazon. for my rec room big screen. Was between the Onkyo and a Bose cinemate sys. Opted for the Onkyo because of great price on amazon, several hundred dollors less than Bose, and also at least $200 dollors less than our large electronics outlet here in Nebr. For the same system. Plus free shipping! I am not a full on electronics type but set-up and conection to my tv was very easy with simple instructions and color coded wires. I still have some things to figure out about all the different capabilities of the 7.1 and different sound modes. but it really sounds great even though I do not completely know how to tune it yet. So I have got a complete surround system, wall mts. and stands for speakers. plus some cables and hook-up eqip. for less than $450! I'm lovin it !
4.0 out of 5 stars Descent for price range,
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1-Channel Home Theater System (Electronics)Pretty much what i expected. I don't give 5 stars because of the sub woofer and speaker wire length. The wire provided for the rear speakers are about 8 feet too short for me to run the wires cleanly to rear of my room. You can set the rear speakers for front high instead of rear though. By the way, I'm not an audiophile or anything by any means. The bass just seems sloppy or something, just rumbling. For movie viewing this isn't much of a problem, but when you play music through this system you can definitely tell it is cheap. I guess you can't expect too much from this price range. Maybe there are some settings that i can change. The speakers seem to be nice enough though. In this price range you're not going to find extremely high quality sound anyway. If anybody has any tips about the bass let me know. Another reason that i think the bass is sloppy for music might be due to the fact that I'm used to hearing music through a regular stereo system that has an old pair of Klipsch ChorusII speakers with 15" woofers with 600 watts to each speaker and a powered klipsch 15" sub. this is the system my dad had at home when i was growing up (The neighbors hated it lol)
5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice,
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1-Channel Home Theater System (Electronics)I bought this system for our home theater. I do not claim to be an audiophile, but we love the sound. It seems to have inputs for every type of device a well.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I could give 6 stars,
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1-Channel Home Theater System (Electronics)I was looking for a surround sound unit for about 8 months. I had to look for so long because I have an ear for sound but not the budget to go along with the bleeding edge of tech. I say that because as I was looking I found sound systems that cost 3,000 and up (this doesn't sound as good as them) I finally found this system in a Fry's electronics store hooked up the bass was deep the sound was undistorted and it was affordable (799.00). So I did what anyone who had a little time would do I went to the internet to find a better price. This system has a enough power to sound great in a large room we have ours setup in a 28' 20' room and it fills the room with sound. I would recommend to anyone with a room near that size to buy speaker wire the stuff that comes with it won't get you very far.
5.0 out of 5 stars So far So Good,
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1-Channel Home Theater System (Electronics)So far I am loving it. Speakers were bigger than expected which isn't a bad thing. Sound is full and set up was easy. The sound cut out/blue screen issue did happen to me right away but as soon as i turned "deep color" off it went away. It is a HDMI handshake issue. For the price this was well worth it.
4.0 out of 5 stars 4/5 only because first receiver didnt work,
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1-Channel Home Theater System (Electronics)I ordered this as my very first home theater system. The price was excellent for a 7.1 surround sound system with a receiver after doing a lot of looking online and in store. the first package i got i opened up and hooked everything up only to find out that the receiver was bad. so i contacted amazon, and the return and shipping of new unit was effortless and easy. kudos to their customer service dept. two days later i had a new unit, hooked it up, and everything worked. i must say at first it was a little confusing to get the system calibrated and the instruction booklet could be a little more user friendly. but once all was hooked up, speakers tested and mounted, i was ready to try it all out. i watched a blue ray movie and also put in a ps3 game and both sounded amazing! i am very pleased with the sound quality and the powered subwoofer has to be my favorite part. the sound is clear and crisp and i would recommend this system to anyone in my shoes. as i said in the title, if it was not for the first receiver not working, i would have rated this 5/5.
5.0 out of 5 stars Onkyo Rocks!!!,
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1-Channel Home Theater System (Electronics)Onkyo equals all about sound and it's true. Super blasting sound. I have tested various sound systems of different brands however found it to be exceeding all expectations.
Regarding this specific model Onkyo HTS-5400:
Different Sound Modes
Lots of I/O Ports
Color Coded Wires
Full Functional Remote
Small wires, specially for Rear Speakers
Does not read NTFS Thumb/HDD drives (FAT16/32 works fine)
Does not play AC3(AAC) Multi-Chanel audio files
Overall, I gaurantee that once you start using Onkyo, you are wired to it, it becomes part of your life.
4.0 out of 5 stars Onkyo HT-S5400,
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1-Channel Home Theater System (Electronics)I really like this 7.1 channel system, the sound is great and I love the Dolby Logic IIz height option. It was easy to set up and calibration was a cinch with the Audyssey 2EQ mic. It only gets 4 stars because every once in a while the ARC stops working and I have to unplug and reset the ARC modes (don't know if it is the TV or the Receiver that has the issue); also, I can't plug my blu-ray player directly into the receiver as it shorts out (however, it might be an issue with my settings in the Panasonic player). I am happy with the purchase.
