5.0 out of 5 stars Superior sound and ease of use
I checked out all the home theater systems offered by Onkyo and this is certainly the best out there for your bucks. I checked the system out in Fry's before I bought it in amazon. Amazon shipment and delivery was well before on-time and it came in crisp and clean. Wonderful and easy to setup.

Onkyo technical support center was worthless....you are better...

3.0 out of 5 stars great sound quality, but DVD player issues and HDMI video pass through
Great sound system. the receiver was working great, but stopped transferring video along the same time the dvd player started to malfunction and "could not read" the dvd. I replaced with one of my other dvd players and it worked again...then the hdmi video pass through pretty much failed slowly...with a stuttering effect.

So now I've rerouted all my audio...

Onkyo technical support center was worthless....you are better off, taking a day or two to figure the connections/setup yourself. Not that difficult.

Excellent sound quality...the intelli sound and audyssey auto calibration of speakers is just fabulous.

Enjoy!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Great sound, nice price!!, February 23, 2007
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S907 7.1 Channel Component Home Theater Audio System (Electronics)
I purchased this from Crutchfield along with the IPod dock. I play a lot of music DVD's, movies, and listen to IPod music and CD's. I wanted versatility and of course, performance. I did a lot of research and continued to find this system to have the best reviews. The specs looked great too, with a 10" subwoofer that goes down to 25 hz. The other 7 speakers with 3 1/8" dual cone woofers and 1" tweeters have a range of 65hz-35kHz. That's pretty much the entire range a human can hear. And with them being matched and using the automatic set up for the speakers (and awesome feature), coupled with this great receiver make this an absolute joy to listen to. I have a great ear, but a moderate pocket book. I would have loved to see 5" dual woofers that go down a little deeper, making them about as good as anything on the market, but its not really necessary. The full range is represented with the sub and the 7 speakers combined. And you'd be talking about bigger speakers too. By the way, these are not tiny speakers. Maybe some people have problem with that. I'm not one of them. They're small enough for me.

The receiver is top notch. There are many features and you need to study and practice for a while to figure it all out, just like most technology today. But Onkyo has made the intial setup very easy. Basically, you can figure out as much as you want to. It'll perform the basics without any trouble pretty easiy. We were up and running within about an hour or two. I barely read the easy instruction either.

I have my system connected to a standard TV (until I can swing the big boy TV), so I can't comment too much about the DVD player. So far, I feel the functions are good. It's great to have a remote that operates pretty much everything.

The IPod dock connects right along with the rest. Sure, the text looks kinda 1990ish, but who cares?

I would have liked to have seen 16 gauge wire for the entire system. Not a real big deal. After doing plenty of research on this topic as well as personal experience, don't get sucked into buying insanely priced speaker wire that claims to be the best. Look at the wire and make sure it's 16 gauge and seems reputable. You shouldn't need to spend over $[...] for 100 feet. The deal is that the further the speakers are from the unit, the thicker the gauge needs to be. The rear speakers are pushing it with the included wire (for highest potential performance with this system). I think you'd MAYBE hear a little improvement, but I doubt most people even would. I think it's crazy and a total scam to buy $100+ speaker wire. I think $[...] for 2 speaker stands is too (this was offered as an additional item). I can't imagine buying an $[...] system and spending an additional $[...] on that junk. I didn't, I won't, and I'm amazed at how great this system is for the money. Heck, money aside, its a great system! I'm just saying that for $[...] we could obviously do better. But for under $[...], this is great. I highly recommend this system! And I'm going to continue to search for a reasonable flaw to complain about.

This is my first surround system purchase. Overall I am very pleased with it. There are plenty of connections on the back, which is very important to me. The 6-disc DVD player is slow to load but the upconvert of standard DVDs to my 1080p Samsung DLP television via HDMI is nothing short of breathtaking (some of that credit goes to the 'Theatre' setting on the Samsung). Music sounds good, but I find the tweeters are weak and the higher frequencies seem to be missing altogether. Bass from the subwoofer is good, the midrange is a little muddy at times for vocals and dialog but if you just turn it up louder it usually sounds better. I have an Xbox 360 connected and it sounds great. The shipping carton is heavy, very heavy, mine was a little smashed but no damage sustained to the unit. The 6-disc changer is so deep that it hangs out of my TV stand by at least 3 inches - pay attention to the measurements if you have a thin TV, this won't fit nicely beneath it. The HDMI on the reciever is a pass through, it will not upconvert analog connections, so your reciever actually takes up 2 connections on your TV - one HDMI and one analog input. I would recommend this unit, but if you are a true audiophile you will be dissapointed with the speakers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sound with Audio CDs and Movies, December 18, 2006
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S907 7.1 Channel Component Home Theater Audio System (Electronics)
This is the first time I am installing a home theater. I did it okay with color-coded wires. I have calibrated using auto calibration suggested in the manual. I listened to audio. It was excellent. While watching movies I found that auto calibration's center speakers is set on higher side and sub woofer setting to lower side than to my liking. I have called Onkyo support and asked them for suggestion, they told me that I can change setting to my liking and still it will not affect the room acoustics point of view. Therefore, I did it and watched Lion King with my family. We all liked it. My kids enjoyed sound effects saying the it matched the movie theater level.

Some have pointed out that wires provided are too thin. To my basics knowledge thin wired still transmit only thing is that they have more resistance. One may opt for monster cable 14 gauge. I am going to change speaker wires shortly with that. I do not have HDTV. Therefore, I cannot say much about DVDs up conversion feature.

Over all very satisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite Pleased, April 29, 2007
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S907 7.1 Channel Component Home Theater Audio System (Electronics)
I purchased this unit from Crutchfield with free shipping. This is of note due to massive size of the shipping container. Crutchfield was also very easy to work with.

The devices themselves function well and the speakers sound terrific, much better than the Polks I replaced them with. They are rather large for having 7 of them and mounting the surrounds on the wall was a chore. Big sound in big packages, I guess. The sub is well rounded playing well with DnB music and standard movie rumbles. The speaker level automation was a kick to play with as well. I did a few before and afters and it did help with overall sound imaging.

On the downside, the DVD changer is HUGE. Unfortunately, it is too deep for my TV stand and pokes out by about 4 inches. The image quality and upverting capabilities are on par, but it's far too big.

5.0 out of 5 stars Owned it for about 6 months and LOVE IT!, December 13, 2007
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S907 7.1 Channel Component Home Theater Audio System (Electronics)
We saw this unit locally and it had wonderful sound so we started shopping around and finally found it on sale at Onecall.com during the summer and got a fantastic deal on it. Beat the local guy by over $200 and beat Amazon's lowest price by about $100 at that time even with shipping becuase of the sale Onecall was running at the time. The unit has fantastic sound and set up was easy. We ended up opting to get better speaker wire than what was provided in the box and we went the route of HMDI for the hookup so there are a lot less wires to hook up from the receiver to the TV, cable box and DVD player. We looked around and listened to a lot of Home Theatre units and for the money you cant beat this unit. We had Polk surround sound speakers prior to this which are "supposed" to so great but the sound from the Polk speakers, was like a tin can. The sound from the speakers on this is very rich and easy on the ears even at louder volumes.

After weeks of reviewing options, this is the best Component Home Theater System (with or without DVD player) under $2,000 that has HDMI connections. Very easy to set up and saved 20% buying online.

I purchased this item from [...] and have been completely satisfied with every aspect of the experience. The Onkyo 907 system has a great sound quality and it is quite flexible with the different types of encoding out there. I was listening to the system in two hours and using some of the more advanced functions in three. I would highly recommend this system to ANYONE looking for a home theater system. It will suit the beginner as well as the expert with ease of use and exceptional functionality. I would also highly recommend Amazon.com as a source to purchase this or any unit. The system was at my door long before I expected it and as usual the customer service with Amazon.com was exceptional.

This has been an awesome system. Super easy to install and configure speakers using the included setup speaker. Sounds are rich and full with great bass to boot. Highly recommend this system for anyone looking for a theater in a box. Its the only one i've seen packaged that contains components you can buy seperately, i.e. receiver, dvd player, sub.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, October 20, 2007

This review is from: Onkyo HT-S907 7.1 Channel Component Home Theater Audio System (Electronics)
This system is incredible...almost bought onkyo 5.1, but 7.1 was on sale for $50 more, so I figured why not. Although 7.1 is a bit much for a 15x25 living room (5.1 would of been fine), this is a definite recommended buy for a home theater in a box. Read some complaints of set-up problems in other reviews, but if you take your time and actually read what confuses you in the manual, the set up is a breeze (about 1 - 2 hours). The receiver has loads of set up options, loads of ins/outs, sounds beautiful. Only 1 gripe, and this has nothing to do with this system. I only bought this one because of 2 HDMI in, 1 out-I think HDMI is overrated for now-I have a 720p/1080i lcd, and I know HDMI excels at 1080p, but 1080p is only available with hd-dvd and I think P3-not sure what else, but picking a receiver just for the HDMI ins/outs shouldn't have been the determining factor in my case...maybe I'll think different a few years from now, but for now I see no difference w/ composite or HDMI @720p/1080i. If the bulk of your tv viewing is cable or sattelite, HD programming is broadcast in 1080i, not 1080p yet. Enough on that-great, great buy
