4.0 out of 5 stars Best value buy for a 2.1 mini system to complement a HDTV - Beats Bose's HDTV audio/video replacements.
I think with the 3 HDMI ins and 1 HDMI out, this 2.1 HTIB has helped simplify my wiring needs to enhance the audio for my HDTV in a fairly large living room which was not presenting itself well for me to fit a 5.1 or larger system.

The audio quality is great and I would say better than what you would get from a Bose Cinematesystem. Buy a $ 100 Blu-ray Player...

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, But I Had much higher expectations based on reviews
I bought this system because Onkyo is a reputable name in audio equipment (especially receivers) and also based on glowing reviews from amazon and other sites. I originally bought the Sony HT-CT15o soundbar system because I wanted a minimalist, simple setup up system, that's easy on the eyes and sounds great, perhaps phenomenal. I was severly disappointed by the sony...

Buy a $ 100 Blu-ray Player to complement this and it even trumps the Bose 3.2.1 system.

The only disadvantage is that I have a Wii hooked up which does not come with an HDMI output and since this sysytem does not have any other I/O for video other than HDMI, I had to buy a RCA to HDMI converter, again through Amazon for about $ 54.00.New 3 RCA Composite S-video R/L Audio to HDMI Converter.

The one negative is that I have not found a comaptible code for the remote to hook it to my Universal Remotes. ONKYO - Hope you are coming out with it shortly. At minimum give us alternative codes for Power On/Off, Vol Up/Down, Input Up/Down. Till Onkyo gives us that, you are tuck with atleast two remotes to handle your gadgets.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect., February 10, 2011

This review is from: Onkyo HTX-22HDX Ultra-Compact HD Home Theater System (Black) (Electronics)
I purchased this system for use in my office/study to supplement the Vizio 26"LED Flat Panel I purchased earlier this month. Since the entire setup (TV, speakers/receiver, BluRay and cable box) sit on one corner of the desk/wall unit size is an issue. The small form factor was what attracted me to the unit.

It is extremely simple to set up. The controls work well and the remote is powerful enough to operate the unit, even when placed behind the flat panel. A definite plus for my installation.

Given the size of the unit it is packed with features and has more than enough inputs for the type of home theater setup I am creating.

Where the unit loses points is in the overall sound quality. The subwoofer is decent if configured and tweaked properly. But the speakers provided as the 'Front Channel' are not what I would expect from a system selling in the $300 range. They are housed in a glossy black plastic with a squishy feeling grill. The sound is tinny and lacks any depth at all. Taken on their own merit, the sound they produce is hardly better than the sound from the TV speakers.

I ended up spending an additional $150 and purchased a pair of Bose 161 bookshelf speakers for use in the front channel and put the supplied speakers in the rear channel for surround sound. The performance of the system driving the Bose speakers is what earned the 4 star rating. Now the sound is clean, crisp, and worthy of being called a home theater.

Going back to my original reason for purchasing this specific unit, I would still recommend it if space is at a premium or you don't want to have a lot of separate components to contend with. But be warned that what you're paying for is a receiver/subwoofer combination and expect to have to add better front channel speakers if you want to enjoy better than mediocre sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great System, December 9, 2010
This review is from: Onkyo HTX-22HDX Ultra-Compact HD Home Theater System (Black) (Electronics)
This system is simple to set up and sounds amazing. I wanted something that was small and would sound good for both tv/movies and music. This system does both very well. Movie and TV dialogue is much clearer and has more punch then the TV's speakers. Overall sound quality is excellent. The subwoofer doubles as the receiver and has three HDMI inputs, one HDMI output to the TV, and two digital audio inputs meaning you can run all your components through it. I'm looking forward to adding the center speaker as soon as Onkyo makes it available here in the States.

I was severly disappointed by the sony soundbar even though it had so many positive reviews on amazon. it didn't sound good to my ears, that's all.

the HTX22HDX is way better than the TV speakers built into my Samsung 40" LED LCDTV but i feel that the system lacks in, crisp clear precise bass that's often produced by wooden subwoofer enclosures. The bass is kind of muffled and lossed.

The subwoofer also has a mini, built in audio receiver with many bells & whistles to tweak the audio settings which were lovely.

The highs and mids are clear and sound good good but I wish the bass was more powerful and precise.

I'm going to return it and put in a probably anothetr $150 for a better sounding system.

This system is much much better than the TV speakers but loses in bass sound performance in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime, November 9, 2010

This review is from: Onkyo HTX-22HDX Ultra-Compact HD Home Theater System (Black) (Electronics)
I attached this home theater system to my Mac Pro using an optical audio (toslink) cable. iTunes never sounded so dramatically pure. The clarity of sound is amazing and I am more than thrilled at my computer gaming experience. The subwoofer fits comfortably under my desk and the two satellite speakers are perched at the extreme ends of my desk. The Onkyo has the option of attaching a total of 5 satellite speakers to create a 5.1 sound system, but the lack of real estate on my desk would make that configuration cumbersome.

The two main reasons I chose Onkyo was my current experience with a 7.1 home theater system which I absolutely love, and the ability to connect to this system using optical digital cabling. There is no electrical interference from nearby cell phones or other electromagnetic spectrum polluters, and the digital sound is delivered from the source untrammeled to the amplifier.

There are plenty of good reviews here, so I would only add that this Onkyo is more than powerful for BIG rooms. I have it on a 17x34 feet (5x10 meters) room, and it sounds perfectly, so, unless you are some kind of king, it should be enough.

Bought this for a vacation home which has large flat screen TV and Blue Ray player. Didn't really want 5 speakers and/or receiver due to space limitations. The unit is small but full featured. Sound is more than adequate for movies and regular TV. To augment a flat screen TV and hook up to the DVD player, this unit is a great fit. Cost is in line with similar quality items although there is no real direct competitor that I have seen.

I purchased this unit to replace my aging Klipsch 2.1 system which actually had better bass, but was becoming balky and malfunctioned often. The Onkyo is simple to set up and run. It has a nice on screen menu that supers over programing without having to interrupt anything. The sound is very good and crisp. It has amazing surround dimensionality for a 2.1 system. I like the fact that there are a minimum number of wires and that the remote easily switches between sources. The one drawback is that the system must have the TV powered on to function properly, There are times when I just want to listen to music from an internet source, but it doesn't work unless the TV is on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Onkyo 2.1 speaker system, February 27, 2011

I live in a loft so I can't be running wires all over the place. This delivers great sound, the subwoofer gives fine in depth details without overpowering the other speakers. There are many options available to tweak the sound as well as adding other speakers if you want to make it a 5.1 system.

3.0 out of 5 stars you get what you pay for, August 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Onkyo HTX-22HDX Ultra-Compact HD Home Theater System (Black) (Electronics)
Bought this system for the tv in my bedroom because i thought it was time to "upgrade" my home theater. Up to this point, i had been using my brothers 3-year-old logitech computer speakers that he bought for $50. Because i had very little experience with sound systems, i just looked at some of the highest rated setups on amazon, and the onkyo htx-22hdx was among the top ones that looked good to me. I ordered this system after reading reviews that said that it is comparable to bose. I have a friend who went all out and bought a bose setup, and i know how they sound so i was really excited to get that quality sound for a fraction of what he paid. When i got home from work one day, the box was sitting on the porch and i could not wait to try out my new "toy." Setting it up was easy and the instructions were very helpful, but when i went to play movies or games on it, i was disappointed in the sound quality. The sound was kinda "hollow," and the sub did not go very deep at all. I messed with the settings a bit and got it to sound a little better, but the old $50 logitech speakers still sounded better. For movies, the dialogue got really quiet during some scenes so i would crank the volume up; then there would be an explosion and it would be really loud. I have done a lot of research and realized that ,with the specs of the onkyo, my expectations were unrealistic. I have since returned the system and bought the denon avr-591reciever, Energy CB-10 Bookshelf Speakers (Pair,Black),Energy CC-10 Center Channel Speaker (Black), and Energy S-10.3 800-Watt 10-Inch Subwoofer (Black) which i am very happy with. I guess it was my fault for not looking into it more before i bought it.

other notes:
1 this system would probably sound better with a center channel to carry the dialogue.
2 i tried to find the add-on speaker pack and i could not find any within the US. they all shipped from europe with ridiculous shipping charges.
