3.0 out of 5 stars Just not sure yet-
Only had it for a month. It sounds just great! I can't believe the improvement in my system and I had a good amp before. I think it must be the computerized equalization that does it. However, it is very much like a computer in that it just stopped working and after goofing with it for a couple of hours I unplugged it and restarted and everything worked fine. Reboot...

This review is from: Onkyo TX-NR1007 135 Watts 9.2-Channel AV Surround Home Network Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
I've been an Onkyo fan for years now. This is my 5th Onkyo receiver in about 9 years or so. I've upgraded for feature set rather than anything being 'wrong' with the prior models I've had. This is the highest end model I've purchases thus far. Hopefully I'll be able to keep this one around for quite a while. It's more than I needed but I was tired of upgrading and wanted something with enough HDMI inputs and features that I wouldn't get the itch.

I have a standard 5.1 surround system for speakers so I am not using the Audyssey DSX or ProLogic IIz functionality. Nor am I using the multiple zones at this time so I have no comment on that functionality.

Things I like:
Audyssey MultiXT - I've had versions of Audyssey in all but maybe the first Onkyo receiver I've had. I don't know whether they changed something or I've gotten better at setting my HT system up properly but after running through the Audyssey speaker setup on this receiver everything sounded much more balanced and even than the setup I had gotten with my previous TX-SR705. The 'sweet spot' is wider and I'm not getting the slight tonal shift as audio moves from one speaker to the next across the front speakers like I used to.

Audyssey Dynamic Volume - This is a fantastic feature! All of my audio for everything is piped through this receiver, whether I'm watching TV, Movies, Music or playing games. With my previous receivers I was always fumbling for the volume when I was watching a show and the commercials came on since they were so much louder. I don't have to do that any more. I have the Dynamic Volume feature set to Light. It makes soft passages loud enough to hear and tones down loud passages, and when the commercials come on they aren't any louder than the tv show I was watching. I do have one quibble with it. There doesn't seem to be a feature to turn it off/on based on the source you've selected. Having this feature on when listening to music is a not a good thing. This isn't a problem with Audyssey, rather an oversight on Onkyo's part.

THX Loudness - I've never really used the THX audio modes of my previous receivers much. Primarly because in order to get the sound approaching that in a theater THX recommends listening at reference volume. There are two problems with that. I live in an apartment and I like not to bleed from my ears. The THX Loudness feature works kinda like the Audyssey Dynamic volume. I find that on some movies the THX method sounds better to me than the Audyssey Dynamic Volume.

Internet radio, Pandora and streaming - The interface for this could use some work (it looks like something from the 90's) but I really like the network features. Streaming audio from my PC in the office is more convenient with this than firing up the Xbox or PS3 and it's one less peice of electronics I have to have running. I also like that the Onkyo will wake up my office pc if it is sleeping when I go to stream audio. I don't know if this is something with my pc that allows this or not but it is convenient.

Things I don't like - I thought my TX-SR705 was loud when it did audio or HDMI switching. This is louder. I'm hoping it's due to beefier switching components. Fortunately this is only an issue at the beginning of movies where they show previews and don't steal me warnings. Also on cable when watching non-movie channels and the commercials have been broadcast in different audio then the show.

One time issue with zero audio. I was watching a tv show and changed channels. After changing the channel I had zero audio. I thought it was the channel but changing the channel back or selecting a different source (tuner) didn't fix it. I was able to fix it by unplugging the receiver for about 5 seconds and plugging it back in. This was disturbing but it hasn't happened since then. If it does I'll have to call Onkyo and find out what they can do.

Overall I love this receiver even with the odd audio issue I had.

5.0 out of 5 stars Onkyo TX-NR1007 Review, March 16, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Onkyo TX-NR1007 135 Watts 9.2-Channel AV Surround Home Network Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
What I have:
Review - Onkyo TX-NR1007 Receiver - hooked up to my home network (wired)
Front: Definitive Technology Mythos STS Speakers (Remember each speaker has a 300w powered subwoofer built in)
Center Def Tech Mythos 9
Surrounds - Def Tech Gems
Emotiva XPA-5 Amplifier 200WPC
Sony BDP-N460 Blue Ray player. HDMI Hookup
Direct TV HD-DVR. HDMI Hookup
XBOX 360. Component to Receiver, Optical to Receiver
IPod adapter: Onkyo Adapter to "Port" input.
Buttkicker using 2nd Sub Out
65" Mitsubishi 1080i projection TV with DVI input
Listen to 80% HD TV input/ 20% music only (but a very important 20%)

Recently I purchased an Onkyo 1007 Receiver to replace an older Pioneer receiver that had no HDMI inputs. I originally set out to buy a pre-pro since I have a strong 5 channel amp already but I found that pre-pros with the same functionality as the receiver cost as much or more. Buying the receiver instead of the pre-pro would allow me to expand to a 7.1/9.1 system in the future or use a second zone without the purchase of additional equipment (besides speakers).
Purchase and delivery - on time and in perfect condition. Since I am an Amazon Prime customer I had it shipped overnight for $3.99 - pretty awesome for a 50 lb shipment.
Setup- Easy. I got rid of a lot of optical and component cables and replaced them with inexpensive Amazon HDMI cables that seem to work great. No more swapping TV inputs either since everything routes thru the receiver to the single TV DVI input. I did have to go into the Blue Ray player's menu in order to set output to 1080i manually in order to get a video signal - might have been a handshake issue. I did a firmware update right away - no issues. Besides the minor Blue Ray issue everything played perfectly without issue.
Audyssey Setup - I used a tripod and set up 6 locations in my 30' by 15' listening room (bare walls, carpeted, glass wall at far end). It took less than a half hour. What a difference! Audyssey really brought out my surrounds well and finally balanced my front and center channel properly. Dynamic Volume, set to medium, does a great job of killing the dreaded loud commercial. I can set the volume to one level and leave it there - it works!. Dynamic EQ does a nice job of maintaining the surround effect when the system is at a lower volume. Audyssey is what led me to this Onkyo receiver and I'm very pleased with what it did for me.
Blue Ray - Great picture and awesome sound - no issues
Xbox 360 - awesome sound and noticeably better picture.
Ipod adapter (Onkyo) works great. Has onscreen menus and video will display. A bit tough to manipulate via the provided remote - not at all intuitive.
DirecTV HD DVR. Great picture and sound. This is the only source that will give the audible "relay clicking" that you may have read about in other reviews. It's rare, not that loud, and usually means that the DirecTv signal has degraded enough to kick out the audio out of Dolby Digital mode. I believe that it's a DirecTv issue for me but it's so minor I don't care. I never get it fast forwarding, pausing, changing channels etc. like I have read in other reviews. IMHO I don't believe that the clicking should be a factor in a buying decision.
Internet Audio via network: Vtuner is fun - I can get a lot of radio stations that I like but don't live within range of. Some at 128kbs so the sound is decent. Pandora radio - love it and it sounds great. I don't pay for Rhapsody or Sirius Radio. It annoys me that I pay for 2 Sirius radios but they want to charge me more for internet access.
Pros:
Sound - crisp, clean, no background noise, much less sibilance that my previous receiver. I can't judge the amplifier section however since I am using a separate amp.
Audyssey.
Everything worked right and continues to do so.
Video looks great to me.
Cons
Remote control is not intuitive, especially when using the Ipod adaptor or internet audio. I use a Harmony remote for the day to day stuff.
Manual/ online resources. Not much practical information on some of the modes/inputs and how they work, especially the Port input (Ipod)

Turning it on and off wouldn't do it. Had to be unplugged and restarted to make it work. The only other thing is that it runs very hot. Puts out a ton of heat. So if I don't have to reboot the thing all the time I'll be very happy with it. Sounds great and has lots of program choices.

5.0 out of 5 stars My whole home entertainment system, January 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Onkyo TX-NR1007 135 Watts 9.2-Channel AV Surround Home Network Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
This is probably my tenth receiver over the years and my fourth Onkyo. I shopped receivers for about two years before deciding on this this model. I have put this receiver through the paces hooking up four HDMI inputs, two HDMI outputs, three zones, one analog audio input plus the built in network audio features. Here is my list of pro's and cons:

PRO-
Several iPhone apps available to control this receiver from anywhere in the house with no noticeable lag.
Video picture is so much better than my old SR605
Volume compression features make it possible to watch movies at night while little ones sleep
Two HDMI outputs means I can finish a movie on the PS3 in the bedroom
RIHD via HDMI allows me to control my PS3 slim from my iPhone ORemote app

CON-
Internet Radio menu is slow to react to user input and it requires your display to be on to navigate menus
DLNA service is worthless if you have a large library. Too difficult to navigate long lists.
Zone audio only works with Analog sources
HDMI output is the same signal on both output ports. Source is the same and the resolution has to be the lowest of the two displays.
Firmware updates do not add new Internet radio features that are on the X008 models. Come on Onkyo don't make planned obsolescence so obvious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Bang for the buck, October 6, 2010
This review is from: Onkyo TX-NR1007 135 Watts 9.2-Channel AV Surround Home Network Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
I have always been an Onkyo owner and this is the best receiver from them to date. It has so many features I have not used them all as to date. The sound is amazing no matter what speakers you hook up to them, either bookshelves or a full HT system up to the full 9.2 channels. I currently have a 7.2 system with heights. My current room does not have the room for wides so I have not tried them.

I bought this receiver over the bigger 3007 and 5007 for the following reasons:
I don't need the HQV for video processing, as my other equipment does the upscaling for me.

There is only 10 watts per channel between this and the top model, not going to make a difference.

USB, I will never use this feature.

Cons: Slight clicking when switching between modes. Firmware updates has helped this a lot though.

This is capable of so many things that you will forever be trying to tweak what is already awesome. Infinitely adjustable and so many features its mind boggling. Definitely it's strong suit is Home Theater, it could use a little more power for music in stereo. The all channel stereo will fill the room with amazing sound. I love this product.

The reciever is working as described. I've been very pleased with it's performance. A little tricky to set-up, but once you've spent some time in the menus to know where settings are making modifications to the system is not difficult. I've been very pleased with the performance.

Perhaps I got a bad unit, but my experience was not good and I ended up sending it back. Setup was fine and it sounded great, but the unit ran extremely hot--the top become almost blistering after just an hour or two of operation, in spite of it sitting by itself on a hardwood floor with nothing on or around it. Overheating in itself isn't a problem, but it would cause the video signal to drop completely after 2-3 hours of operation. I'd be watching a movie and 'blink', the audio would continue but the video would be gone. Note that the video would drop on ALL inputs at this point. Also, a minor point is that my remote did not reliably power on or off the unit. Sometimes it would work, and sometimes it wouldn't. This was my first experience with an Onkyo, and likely my last.

2.0 out of 5 stars Avoid Onkyo, July 22, 2011
This review is from: Onkyo TX-NR1007 135 Watts 9.2-Channel AV Surround Home Network Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
The product works great - for about 6 months. Then expect to be without the unit for 6-8 weeks (possibly more) for the "no-service" center to diagnos and repair problem, only to wait for the possibility of it to break again, only this time out of warranty.

I have the TX-NR1008 with 2 HDMI outputs - one to the projector in the main viewing area and another to a TV across the room. Suddenly the HDMI Main quit working. The sub works fine, but I cannot view both screen at the same time. Called customer "no-support" in India. They had me reset the receiver (thereby clearing all my preset adjustments and forcing me to do a complete install of all my customized settings. Only to be told my HDMI run was too long. Oh yeah? Then tell me Hadji why did work fine for 6 months? Why when I swap HDMI cables does the HDMI-sub work, it is only the HDMI-main that does not work? Huh? (crickets.....) You have to call a repair center, yadda-yadda-yadda.... Repair center? 3-4 weeks before it will even be looked at (not repaired - just looked). Hmmmm.... Let me count the ways Onkyo has dropped the ball in this scenario...

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally broke free from Denon, February 5, 2011
This review is from: Onkyo TX-NR1007 135 Watts 9.2-Channel AV Surround Home Network Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
I have been stuck on "middle" range Denon products for quite a few years starting with the 3803 and kept buying Denon products due to the value that I found in the 3800 series. Over the past couple of years though, Denon has been pushing customers to go to the next price tier with the introduction of the 4300 series. When comparing the 4310 with the Onkyo 1007, I decided to give the Onkyo a shot and am so happy I did.

Amongst other things that the Denon didn't offer, The Onkyo 1007 has 2 discrete subwoofer outputs which is something you have to spend much more for with Denon.

Thank you Onkyo for creating such a well featured and great sounding machine!
