Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I found Onkyo's TX-NR525 to be an excellent pick to power up and manage our living room media center for as long as you're not looking for a 7.2 solution in which case you may want to consider the Onkyo HT-RC460 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver (Black). The TX-NR525 has the ability to control everything physically connected to it and it seamlessly reaches out to other devices on our home network and beyond, to the Internet. The temptation to go over every single feature I am aware of is strong but receivers have become complex, multi-featured machines and there's a comprehensive manual that does that. I will therefore talk about what the HR-RC460 did as I tested it and what I found impressive or not so much, useful or less so, feature-rich or overwhelmingly complex or complicated. This could mean that I may not speculate about features that some may find worth discussing at some length and accept it as inevitable but I wasn't able to test hands-on. My hope is that the setup I used for my test drive is not unlike what most typical users are likely to have.

The TX-NR525 was tested as a 5.1 surround system. I did not set a second zone. Directly attached to it via HDMI were a TV, a satellite box, a WD media hub, a Blu-ray/DVD player and a gaming console with the last three having their own Ethernet connections. A security camera system was attached through a component video cable. The receiver was connected to the Internet via a Ethernet cable which in turn talks to a router over the power lines. The receiver and everything hard-wired to it were set to be operated with a Harmony universal remote control.

I bought this to replace my old Yamaha home theater (HTR5930) since it lacked HDMI inputs and basically, my home theater components grew out of it. The decision was simple - went to Amazon and was looking at a receiver with the following "must-haves":
1. Under 90W per speaker output
2. 5 channels (5.1/5.2)
3. Connect to my home network so I can play my media files
4. Speaker hookup through a banana plug
5. At least 5 HDMI imputs so I can keep this going for another 5 years
6. 3D ready (I am shortly replacing my TV)
7. Affordable - I was shopping for something under 400.

The TX-NR525 was a perfect fit into all of the above categories. well, except 1 which I will explain in the cons below.

1. Easy hookup
Connected my components into the HDMI ports in the back, HDMI out to my TV, Optical out from TV into the Optical In of the receiver, connected all my speakers, switched it on, and that's it.
2. Speaker hookup using Banana Plug:
This, IMHO, should be industry standard. I have blown countless speakers because of the old spring wire mount. The wires short, come off, every time someone moves the cabinet for cleaning. It is difficult to access that small push buttons and try to insert the speaker cable into a very tiny hole. This one uses banana plugs so, once I have the banana plugs fixed (used the handy stickers to identify them), I was plugging them in a clean fashion.
3. Price:
I was not able to find something at this price with all my needs. Tried Sony, Denon and the likes. TX-NR525 fell right into my budget.
4. Sound:
Great sound.!! Awesome when I watch HDMI channels on TV. Fills the room. I still have to fine tune it, but on the get-go, it sounded great.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The Onkyo TX-NR525 and TX-NR626 are very similar receivers. The 626 has the addition of Wi-Fi-Certified Wireless LAN Capability, Bluetooth Audio Streaming, 7.2 Channels instead of 5.2, 4K Upscaling, 2 HDMI-Out instead of 1, and 95W of power output per channel instead of 80W. The price premium of 626 over 525 is $100, and I deem it is worthwhile to consider the 626 if you desire more than two of the above six "features". Otherwise, save the money and buy the 525. You can also add the first two features by attaching Onkyo UWF-1 Wireless LAN Adapter and Onkyo UBT-1 Bluetooth USB Adapter to the 525, but these would set you back by $70 already. Therefore, if you need these two features, buy the 626 which has these built-in.

I purchased one of these receivers and sometime within the Amazon return dates, it overheated an internal component which broke the receiver. Amazon replaced the potentially defective receiver, and I was sent a new one. This one worked for 4 months before doing the exact same thing. During a movie with plane wings or an explosion, I heard a pop in the receiver and no longer was able to turn on. This time I had to send the receiver away to a service center. A month later I got the receiver back, and it has been working well until today which finally inspired me to write this review. After only another 2 months of what I imagine is normal family use of the receiver, any sound through the receiver randomly goes in and out. I have to send this receiver in for service a second time within 7 months. Buyer Beware: Despite the mostly glowing reviews, there apparently some of these receivers that are prone to repeated problems.
