Product Description

Bring the next-generation entertainment to your home

The TX-NR636 serves up revolutionary Dolby Atmos surround-sound complete with liquid 4K video at 60 frames per second. Dolby Atmos moves the sound around your theater more realistically to place you in the center of the action, creates a plane of sound over the listener’s head, and more accurately locates surround effects mixed for discrete channels. This receiver has HDMI supporting 4K/60 Hz and 21:9 display format and HDCP 2.2 copy-protection compatibility. Qdeo upscaling technology also converts low-res DVDs and games into pin-sharp Full HD or 4K (if you have an Ultra HD display). TX-NR636 paves the way for Ultra HD video playback at a liquid-smooth 60 frames per second. This is great news for PC gamers who can now add wall-shaking surround sound to their 4K/60 Hz experience.

Unsurpassed build quality

Onkyo’s acclaimed WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology), which provides the backbone that delivers Onkyo’s classic sound, is coupled with Three-stage inverted Darlington Circuitry to the LCR channel to provide a big soundstage, superb timing, brilliant definition, and enough low-end grunt to make your speakers sing. With 165 Watts/Ch (6ohms 1kHz, 2 Channels Driven, FTC) the TX-NR636 packs a colossal punch for movies but still retains the pure musicality you need for two-channel playback.

It’s got all the connections

Built-in Wi-Fi for universal hi-res streaming from PC, NAS, and smartphone is just the beginning. You can select from a wild variety of music streaming services and locate your network-attached libraries using the remote app, or stream almost any audio via built in Bluetooth. An HDMI/MHL terminal connects smartphones to display 1080p video with 7.1 channels of surround sound. Throw in a dedicated phono input, room equalization, and powered Zone 2 and you’ve got a value-packed 7.2-channel powerhouse ready for the next wave of high-resolution entertainment.

Dolby Atmos multidimensional sound

Onkyo is among the first to introduce the exciting Dolby Atmos surround-sound format to home theater environments. Dolby Atmos uses object-oriented mixing to layer independent audio elements through discrete channels, moving three-dimensional sound effects around the theater with astonishing realism. The format adapts to any home theater layout incorporating height channels for a more enveloping soundfield with extremely accurate directional and overhead effects.

Hi-fi power and fidelity

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) is all about current. Receivers need a lot of current to not only handle the sudden explosive actions scenes but also to reproduce the detail of quiet passages. We use a massive high-power transformer to drive discrete amps that help eliminate distortion and preserve the energy of music and movies. Delivering 165 watts per channel, the TX-NR636 packs a colossal punch for movies but still retains the pure musicality you need for two-channel playback. Also, Phase-Matching Bass Enhancement optimizes low frequencies while preserving mid- range clarity. It counters phase shifting by synchronizing the timing of different frequencies. The result is deep, well-defined bass that won’t blur vocals or strings.

AccuEQ Room Calibration
Exclusive AccuEQ room calibration

Calibrating the sound to suit your room’s acoustics is simple with AccuEQ. Once you’ve connected your speakers, plug-in the included mic and wait a few moments as the TX-NR636 measures things such as speaker distance, type, crossover, and output, taking into account any reflections from your walls and floor. The system is designed specifically to by-pass your front left and right speakers. The system then optimizes the frequency response of the remaining speakers so you can enjoy balanced surround sound regardless of room shape or furnishing while retaining the characteristics of your front left and right speakers for optimum enjoyment.

I just recently purchased one of these after doing quite a bit of research. Looking all over the web at reviews, prices, features I was able to narrow it down to Onkyo, Denon and Yamaha. I felt the features that came with the 636 (such as 7.2 surround, 4K output, standard def upscaling and ethernet/WiFi networking) made this my ultimate choice. The receiver itself is about 20 pounds in weight, but it looks classy. Getting to all the connectors and plugs on the back of the unit was easy and there is plenty of room for all the HDMI cables, speaker wires (I have mine connected with banana plugs), ethernet cable and component cables. I've got the receiver hooked up to Energy Take Classic speakers and the sound is so clear and true. Voices during movies and high-quality audio files sound crisp and clean. Big fan of the 636.

The TX-NR636 is the latest receiver in the 600 series and has some notable improvements over older generations. Prior to this, I was using a TX-NR809, and although it's higher up in the line, it lacks some of the features of this newer model. Likewise, there are high end features that this one lacks. But I can't rightfully consider the lack of them them faults or even negative points. They are reasons to consider getting models that are closer to the top end of the line, if you want those those features. But this one already has a lot to offer.

For starters, this unit has excellent sound. It also improves the picture quality a great deal. Notably, it's compatible with the newest 4K displays, and even if you don't have one yet, it's good to be ready for it. Onkyo already describes all this, but seeing and hearing is believing.

Setting up this unit is extremely straightforward. It comes with a microphone that you place in your preferred listening position. The system will then send appropriate sounds to each speaker, determine which speakers are used in your system, and adjust for acoustic delay based on the distance from the speakers to the optimum listening position. It will also compensate for room conditions and equalize the sound appropriately, If you want a more complex process that accounts for multiple listening positions, you may want to consider something higher in Onkyo's product line. But chances are you won't be disappointed with this one, not only in your preferred seat, but also in adjacent ones.

The setup process also prompts you to set your remote control to work with virtually any component in your system.

This is the 4th Network AV receiver I've used the last 4 years. This is also the highest specs/most featured one. Previously I was using a Denon AVR-X100, before that an Onkyo TX-NR515 and before that a Harman Kardon AVR 2600.

Pros:
1) 7.2 ability - I believe my Harman Kardon had 7.1, but I didn't have the speakers for it. Now I do and I love 7.2 sound. My set up uses 2 high and wide speakers up front. For movies and shows created to use 7.1, the effect is epic. I wasn't sure if it would make a difference, but it did and it's nice to have. The ".2" means you can add 2 subwoofers, which I'm beginning to really get curious about......
2) Easy set up and network connectivity - This is something that has been improving with each new receiver. Lately it seems like I just have to connect to the network and everything just shows up. I think DNLA enabled devices are the easiest to use. It just seems like everything that can be used is easily found with no extra tinkering. Wireless and bluetooth work fine, too
3) Good internet streaming source list - Good list and includes Slacker, my favorite. The Denon had the fewest choices
4) Auto speaker set up software - This is something my last 2 receivers had and I really like it. You use an included microphone to get the best sound adjustments. This model of Onkyo uses their own version of software but it is unclear if it is a version of Audyessy. While I like it, read on in the Cons about it
5) Lots of connectivity options - I think this is what you get the more you pay. This one has plenty of HDMI in and 2 out. I know my Denon did not have an input for our Wii, which used RCA connectors, but this one does.

I coupled this receiver to a 7.1 speaker system by Definitive Technology.....
ProCinema 600 series with (2) additional ProMonitor 800 satellites for the front.

The combination makes for one sweet sounding system......an awesome 7.1 surround sound experience or full rich sounding music system that can rival many systems costing much more.

Setup is very straight forward & simple but yet offers a lot of advanced custom tweaking to achieve the sound and function you desire. Following the onscreen setup has you up and running in no time. AccuEQ with included microphone has your setup calibrated in just a few minutes to your particular speakers and setup.

Network, bluetooth, USB, and the remote app work flawlessly as advertised. Simple and straight forward.
The remote app is pretty basic but does work perfect with zero issues.

Network setup was simple and works flawlessly......I have (2) desktops, (1) laptop, (2) iPads, (4) security cams, (1) treadmill on my network. This system causes no problems and no issues with any of them.
This system works flawlessly with zero issues on my network.
I repeat, no network issues noted.

The remote I have configured to operate the following systems and it works perfect with no noted problems.
Samsung 55" LED TV, Samsung blu-Ray, Onkyo CD player, Apple TV.
Simple and easy to configure and operate.....I put the OEM remotes in storage! :-)

Again, I can't stress how great this system sounds. Full, rich, and deep sounding music and awesome surround sound reproduction.

Only very slight negatives I've found is the remote app is sort of basic and simplistic, but it does the job.
Also, some of the setup screens are very basic and lack any any graphics.
Nothing that is a big deal or a showstopper.

The Onkyo TX-NR636 is a highly recommended receiver at a super competitive price.
