Eight HDMI inputs handle all your high-def content, from master-quality audio to up-scaled 4K video. Home network capability lets you bring streaming internet radio and PC audio to your living room. Advanced audio options include bi-amping, 7.2 multichannel pre-outs, and distributed multi-zone audio. As you'd expect from Onkyo, construction is first-rate. A massive transformer, symmetrical L/R channels, separate power and pre-amp blocks, and a highly rigid chassis provide the bedrock for a superlative audio performance. Built with the serious home theater fan in mind, the TX-NR809 offers a class-leading mix of power, features, and performance.

Onkyo has more THX-certified A/V receivers than any other manufacturer.

With a THX-certified Onkyo A/V receiver, you know you're experiencing movie soundtracks the way they were recorded and produced to be heard. You're getting the power and nuance the director made for the cinema, the very best sound quality available, in your own home. This THX Select2 Plus certification is specified for rooms where the screen to-seat-viewing distance is 10 to 12 feet and the room volume is around 2000 cubic feet. THX Loudness Plus is included in the specification.

Onkyo network A/V receivers give you access to more internet radio stations than any other brand...period.

Streaming your choice of internet radio through your Onkyo A/V receiver gives you unsurpassed sound quality and access to a virtually infinite selection of world class music. Enjoy your own personal concert from anywhere in the world... right in your own living room.

All Onkyo network receivers are also compatible with Microsoft’s Windows® 7 platform, which includes the DLNA 1.5-specified “Play To” media-streaming feature so you can easily stream music store on PCs connected to your home network. This internet connectivity has the added benefit of making firmware updates simpler than ever.

UWF-1 Wireless LAN adaptor

Onkyo's UWF-1 Wireless LAN adaptor removes unwanted cables. This small, optional unit is worth way more than its tiny price.  Connect the UWF-1 to the USB port on any compatible 2011 Onkyo network receiver, and bring your music through your wireless router into your Onkyo system. Now internet radio and audio files stored on your PC can be played back with the superior fidelity of your main Onkyo system — with no cable clutter. A sensible and inexpensive solution.

Onkyo's Remote Apps

Onkyo's Remote Apps for Android and iPod/iPhone turn your cell phone into a remote control. The Android app lets you Stream audio files from your Android to your Onkyo home network receiver. Set tone, volume levels and control input selection, as well as a number of other key features like controlling internet radio stations…

The Onkyo app for iPhone/iPod will allow you to set tone, volume levels and control input selection.

Made for iPod®/iPhone®

Onkyo receivers allow you to and play audio files stored on your iPod/iPhone or even a USB flash drive. The on screen display lets you see exactly what is playing. As the audio signals are played back in digital form, rather than analog, there is much less chance for signal degradation. Onkyo's exclusive Advanced Music Optimizer also compensates for lost bit information and improves the quality of compressed audio signals.

End result: Your music sounds cleaner and more faithful to the original.

Ready for next generation displays, NOW!

While deftly handling the most current high-def display formats, Onkyo's also the first in the world to support the coming full 4K upscaling (3840 x 2160) of standard video sources such as 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i/p. Interlaced-to-progressive conversion and scaling are performed by a high-quality Marvell Qdeo video-processing chip.

Crisp and Clean 1080p Upscaling

The sophisticated HQV® Vida VHD1900 processor enhances the quality of both standard-definition and high-def video sources. The chip employs multicadence tracking, expanded 12-bit color processing, and four-field motion-adaptive de-interlacing to optimize video quality and detail. Two new HQV technologies are at work here: Auto HQV® - which automatically enhances the incoming image, and HQV StreamClean™ cleans up compressed video in real time by eliminating mosquito and block noise from lower-quality sources such as online video sites.

3D and ARC

All Onkyo A/V receivers support the latest in 3D technology. Play 3D movies, games, and broadcast content in cinematic quality in your own home and be amazed by the realistic quality. The HDMI® inputs let you connect multiple high-def sources, such as a Blu-ray player, a gaming console, and a cable/satellite tuner. The HDMI output, on the other hand, lets you send a pristine signal to a compatible high-resolution display. Audio Return Channel allows audio content received directly by your HDTV’s tuner to be sent “upstream” via HDMI to your A/V receiver, without the need for a separate S/PDIF audio cable.

A Suite of Audyssey Technologies

Audyssey MultEQ XT is an advanced room-correction technology with high-resolution filters for satellite speakers and subwoofers. MultEQ XT gathers frequency and time-domain measurements from up to eight positions in the listening area, to deliver a clear, well-balanced, and natural sound.

Audyssey Dynamic EQ maintains a consistent bass response, tonal balance, and surround-sound effect at different volume levels, so you can enjoy the natural dynamics of your content regardless of the volume.

Audyssey Dynamic Volume automatically compensates for volume fluctuations in different audio content (for example, during commercial breaks) while optimizing the dynamic range.

Dolby® Volume performs independent loudness adjustments to different frequencies and channels to produce a listening experience that includes all the dynamics of the original mix at whatever volume you choose. It also offers the option of maintaining playback volume at the same user-chosen level across all input sources.

Dolby® Pro Logic® IIz can reconfigure the surround back channels to deliver “front height” channels. These channels carry ambient, non-directional audio that adds a new vertical dimension to your movies and games. Audyssey DSX provides a similar front-height speaker option that likewise works to create a more enveloping home theater experience.

Change Your Receiver's Settings Seamlessly

Thanks to Onkyo's overlaid graphical on-screen display (OSD), set-up menus appear on top of the video image you're watching, so you don't have to switch to a blank screen background. Easily navigate intuitive menus to maximize all of the features and benefits of your Onkyo A/V receiver. The OSD and Graphical User Interface (GUI) both operate over HDMI, making excellent use of that versatile interface.

Extra Connectivity Options

Use PC-IN to easily connect your notebook or mediacenter PC to your Onkyo AV receiver, and watch your movie files on your flatscreen TV. You can now easily watch internet videos, PC-stored movies and pictures on your TV. (Audio connectivity may vary depending on your computer hardware, but Onkyo A/V receivers support a wide range of different interfaces.)

Phono Input- Those who have retained a love for vinyl, we've got you covered. We respect this most noble of devotions. We still include the Phono Input that allows you to use your turn table to spin those albums and hear them with pristine Onkyo sound Quality. Because, after all, it's all about Sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars The 809 is worth the upgrade... July 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
Onkyo TX-NR809 THX Certified 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver (Black)

Ownership - Day 10
I upgraded from an Onkyo TX-SR606 which I owned for about 3 years. I loved my 606 so I figured why not stick with what I know/like (Onkyo). I know about all of the problems people had with the 808 and Onkyo has stood by their product and honoring repairs even though a product may be out of warranty.

I have now had an opportunity to check out all of the bells and whistles of this receiver.

Setup - 5/5, very easy if you have had any experience in the past with any receiver (highly suggest banana plugs and 14 or 12 gauge speaker wire). The included calibration microphone really makes things easy - plug in the mic and the receiver will automatically switch to the onscreen GUI for speaker setup and calibration. Once the setup detects which speakers you have hooked up you can then setup additional "spots" in your viewing area. (can take as little as 10-15 minutes). Network setup is very simple if you are using a direct connection to the ethernet (DHCP will assign an IP address for you-also suggest assigning a static IP for avoid conflicts).

Sound - 5/5, currently using a 5.1 setup with Polk Monitor speakers I am very happy with the results. While the 606 was no pushover I feel the newer Audyssey MultEQ found in the 809 made things sound more "clear" (tough to describe)- Prior to purchasing I had started watching Lord of the Rings trilogy on bluray and saw the first 2 films and half of the 3rd on the 606 - ended up finishing the 3rd film on the 809 - easily heard the difference in sound quality.

Video - 5/5*, I put the * in because I had very little use with the upscaling features as all of my sources were 1080p (not including HD cable which is 1080i and I switched the input to "through"). I did use it for my Wii which is only 480p and was impressed with the quality (still no where near HD but saw an obvious improvement on a 52" TV). I am curious to know how the 4K upscaling feature would work (since there are no retail TVs on the market that can accept a resolution that high) but for now the Vida processor should be good enough to upscale and source that is not 1080p already.

Features - 4.5/5, LOVE! the network features. Using Pandora is just as easy as using it on my phone or computer (maybe not the typing part with the remote) but the interface is very clean and easy to use. The most recent firmware update added Spotify but I have yet to check it out. The DLNA feature was key to me as it can connect directly to my NAS and play all of my MP3s from there, no need to stream from the NAS to my PS3 first. I also purchased a 3rd party Ipad app to use as a remote and LOVE it! Big feature for me was the ability to rename all my sources (which I could not do on my 606). I currently have a PS3(hdmi), HD STB(hdmi), Xbox 360(hdmi), Wii(component), Sony bluray player(hdmi), and a 2nd Xbox 360(component/optical) so renaming was key for me (mostly for my wife).

Overall - SUPER happy with my purchase and would recommend this to anyone in the market for an upgrade (the 609 and 709 from Onkyo are also great with a few less features then the 809 that everyone may not need). At the time the 809 was the best price so I pulled the trigger. I took off 1 star (I wish I could have made it a 1/2 star) because of Onkyo support. I had an issue with the Internet functions where I could not connect to Pandora and after waiting 10 minutes to speak to someone the only option was to do a factory reset (I had to rename all sources again as well as do the Audyssey speaker calibration again). I would have been ok with this option if they would have told me what caused it, instead I got a very unclear "possibility" to what caused it. Since then I have had no issues with connecting but the support is lacking.

EDIT - 8/24/11 now past the 30 days of use.
I am now upping my review to 5 stars after the most recent firmware update. They have added two more internet radio options (I believe one of them requires a paid subscription). I am also happy to report the locking up issue I had with Pandora seems to be resolved as I have used it daily since the update with no issues. Onkyo also added a remote control app for the Android OS (I have a Droid X) initially the remote app was only for the iphone/ipad/ipod. The controls are limited but for a free app its nice to have as an option. Since purchasing this receiver Onkyo has released 3 firmware updates and that shows support for their products and customers. While I was not thrilled with the customer service I encountered I think taking off a whole star for 1 persons actions should not drop the product to 4 stars.

Edit - 6/28/12 - one last edit even though this product has been replaced by the 818 (so people may be picking this up at a nice discount. I need to chime in regarding a 3rd party app that has far exceeded my expectations. Its the Oremote for ipod, iphone & ipads. I am usually not keen on buying any apps for more than $1 but after buying Oremote I have ZERO regrets. Its about 100% more effective than the standard app that onkyo provides for free. I mainly use it on my ipad and love that while using Pandora I can switch songs, see artwork, thumbs up a song while not even being in the same room as the receiver.
Also recently upgraded all of my speakers and sub - re-ran the Audyssey calibration and again impressed with Onkyo's power for pushing even larger speakers. Ill be coming up on my 1 year since purchase of the 809 and still stand by my 5 star rating. Not once has this receiver let me down over the months of tv, movie and video games.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible sound! June 10, 2011
I've had the previous generation 808 for several months, but had the need for a second receiver and wanted one I was already familiar with. Quite simply, I'm amazed at the sound quality of the 809. All music and movies sound much, much better - and the 808 is no slouch. The sound is richer, fuller and more balanced for all audio files - hi def files on my server, but also streaming music at low bit rates. Surround sound decoding and balance for movies is much improved and really adds to the "you are there" experience. The 809 helped me greatly with one of my major problems - subwoofers that don't have a lot of bark when Bruce Willis blows away the bad guys. Subs now sound much deeper and finally shake the floor and the only difference in my system is the 809. Onkyo has obviously put a lot of work into improving the audio processing technologies. GUIs are better - especially for the net function/button. I literally couldn't pull myself away from the 809 for hours after I set it up - I had to see how much better everything sounded. Couldn't be happier and consider the purchase worth every penny.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy from this company July 13, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
This receiver was delivered on April 1, 2012. I guess that was an appropriate date because I feel like a real fool for purchasing it. The receiver worked fine for just over nine weeks when I began experiencing video problems. After going through using different input devices, HDMI cables, and televisions I called Onkyo support. They told me to do all the things I had already done and then said that the receiver needed to be reset. I followed their instructions to perform the reset and it only made me lose my settings and did not work any better. I read several forums concerning the problem and found that numerous people experienced similar problems. I again contacted Onkyo and was told there was a firmware update that would resolve the problem. Needless to say after spending well over an hour to perform this update it did nothing to resolve the problem. I again contacted Onkyo and was told there was nothing more they could do and to send the receiver (at my expense) to the nearest service center.

I sent the receiver to All Tech Electronics in Lincoln Park, NJ, the nearest service center. After waiting two weeks I called to find out the status. I was told that they would be getting to it early the next week. I called again the next week and was told they ordered an HDMI board and that it was back ordered and would be delivered on July 14. I called Onkyo and was told that the service center would be receiving the part on 7/7. I called the service center again today, 7/13, and was told the part was now backordered until 7/18. I called Onkyo again was told that there was nothing they could do to assist me. I asked to speak to a supervisor and got their voice mail.

I owned this receiver for nine weeks before I began having problems. It has now been six weeks since I first contacted Onkyo about the problem and it is now 25 business days since the receiver was delivered to All Tech Electronics. I've been told it'll be another five days befor they are scheduled to receive the part and they won't even estimate when the repairs would take place and even got quite annoyed that I wanted to know when I would get my receiver returned to me.

I also purchased the additional warranty from Square Trade. They won't honor their warranty until the worthless warranty from Onkyo expires. Amazon only takes back the product for 30 days after the order so this has been a very unpleasnt experience.

EDIT:I finally got my receiver back on 8/27, over ten weeks after I sent it for repairs. Well, at least its working right now.
