Amazing Amp Technology, discrete, digital, power, watts

The Foundations of Onkyo Sound

Separates Construction

Our design philosophy considers how each individual component interacts with the others, and the effects on audio and video performance. Therefore, the separates inside the receiver (the pre-amp and the amp) are designed so that the power amplifier block and the pre-amplifier coexist, but are perfectly isolated. Furthermore, the circuit boards are fixed to the chassis so that vibrations from the base are suppressed.

Three-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry

A pristine analog waveform is sent for amplification by Onkyo's efficient Three-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry, which incorporates a low negative feedback design and conducts more sublimely natural sound. Three-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry is designed for high-energy output, and is used on all channels to handle reference-level playback with very low distortion.

This abundance of clean power, advanced processing technology, and generous build specification will drive your home entertainment to previously unimagined dimensions.

Wide Range Amplifier Technology

At the core of Onkyo's Signature sound is Onkyo's proprietary Wide Range Amplifier Technology (WRAT). This innovative amplifier design is comprised of three key elements: (1) a low negative feedback design for punchy, true-to-life sound, and cleaner audio across the frequency ranges; (2) closed groundloop circuits to reduce individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion; and (3) a high instantaneous current to handle big dynamic gains.
Best Amplifier Design
From the quietest dialog passages to booming action scenes, Onkyo's exclusive WRAT amp technology dramatically enhances the audio dynamics of your movies, music and games like you've never before experienced.

Take a look at the TX-NR929's amp features here.

Deep, Defined Bass
Powerful Bass AND Clear Vocals

Phase-Matching Bass optimizes low frequencies and preserves mid-range clarity. This means that powerful bass plays back with clear vocals; it doesn't overpower them.

Onkyo's PM Bass boost technology improves the phase timing to preserve the natural clarity of the mid-range, and allows vocals and strings to shine while maintaining a smooth, powerful bass response at all volume levels.

HDMI for 4K Passthrough, Upscaling & High Resolution Playback
8 HDMI Inputs (1 Front/7 Rear) and 2 Outputs

Qdeo technology from Marvell upscales standard video to silky-smooth 1080p (for regular HDTVs) and to an incredible 4K on compatible displays. Also, this receiver will passthrough 4K resolution from compatible source devices.

The TX-NR929 features nine HDMI inputs to accept hi-res content from your media players and gaming consoles. HDMI enables Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio audio formats, and supports 3D video. Two HDMI outputs are included for high-definition video in two separate zones (one supports Audio Return Channel, so you can boost your TV's sound through your receiver).

Zone 2 HDMI Output
High-Definition ideo in Two Rooms

With Zone 2 HDMI Out, you can send hi-def content to a second TV without having to purchase another Blu-ray player or any other settop box. Connect your additional display using the receiver's Zone 2 HDMI output to watch the same program, or a different one, in two different rooms.

Music from Everywhere
Sounds Even Better Through an Onkyo

The TX-NR929 comes pre-loaded with the most popular music streaming and internet radio services including Spotify, Last.fm, and TuneIn Radio. They're easily selectable using the receiver's GUI or the remote control app.

Explore more than 10,000 radio stations and enjoy albums and playlists with theater fidelity sound.

Quick & Easy Remote App
Makes Control Easy & Convenient

The Onkyo remote app for iPod touch®/iPhone,® Android, and Kindle devices is a convenient way to control your home entertainment from anywhere within wireless range. The app has a clear graphical interface to control playback, adjust settings and handle content across multiple zones.

The app serves hi-res, lossless, and compressed audio files (including 192 kHz/24-bit FLAC, DSD, and Dolby® TrueHD) to the TX-NR929 from your mobile devices, and gives it stunning sound.

InstaPrevue™ technology names your HDMI sources and then displays live video thumbnails of available content. Switch sources easily, with just a glance. No need to remember what's connected to which port.

Audyssey Technology for Optimal Sound
Auto-adjustments: Calibrated for Your Room

Audyssey MultEQ®XT32 room-correction technology equalizes the sound as it is effected by bouncing off of walls and furniture in your home theater space. It works by making adjustment in both the frequency response and time domain across the entire listenting area. The results are immediate and obvious: it delivers clear, well-balanced, natural sound.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I recently upgraded to the TX-NR929 from my humble TX-SR606, and I've been very impressed so far. In terms of device support and audio quality, this receiver is amazing. It should satisfy all but the most discerning home theater buffs. There are *NINE* HDMI inputs and even *TWO* HDMI outputs! If you're fortunate enough to have a large house that can take advantage of multizone audio, you can stream music to three zones, and video to two.

When the receiver is first powered on, it walks you through a basic set up wizard. Just follow the instructions to run your speaker calibration using the included microphone, and set up your wireless network. Despite the nearly overwhelming amount of features, everything is actually really easy to do. The only slightly confusing issue that I ran into after doing the initial setup was that I couldn't find how to get back into the full setup menu. It turns out that the "Setup" button on the remote is actually the "Quick Setup", and it only gives you a limited number of options. To get to the full setup menu, press the "Home" button and then select "Setup".

My soon-to-be-upgraded Martin Logan MLT-2s already sound fantastic on this receiver. I mostly use my home theater setup to watch movies and play video games, and the Audyssey XT32 calibration really helped make my setup sound better and more immersive. Perhaps I should have taken more time to configure my old receiver, but games and movies definitely sound better on the TX-NR929.

The smartphone app is a great feature for those who want to use the receiver more for music. It works well, but it could use a little bit more polish.

This review is only for those who also want to use the 929 for multi-room use (Zone 2 or Zone 3 speakers). For the main listening area, the receiver is pretty good. For the other zones, not so good.

I bought this after my 2 year old equivalent receiver (Onkyo TX-NR1008) stopped playing sound. It turned out this was a common issue for this model. Prior to it failing, it was a good receiver. I used it to control a 5.1 AV solution as well as a zone 2 pair of speakers in another room. I thought this model would be equivalent to the 1008 since its the same tier, just updated. Unfortunately, here are the issues

NOTE: Zone 2 and Zone 3 really are only for analog sources unless you use the HDMI Zone 2 out. Zone 2 speakers and zone two outputs only pass through analog signals.

- Zone 2 speakers - when using the internal amp, the 929 cannot control bass or treble for zone 2. Music can come out "tinny" and it can't be adjusted.
- Zone 2 output - when using an external amp, the 929 cannot control the volume of the signal, so volume control must be done by the zone 2 amp. (which really means you need a receiver, not a simple amp).

- Zone 2 & 3 triggers - Zone 2 trigger out works with most devices that need a 12v trigger. However, the Zone 3 trigger has a low output current and will not work on every device. This can cause issues when expanding to a third zone.

- Whole House feature - This seems worthless. This is a shortcut to turning on Zone 2 and Zone 3 and playing the same source. However, some sources such as bluetooth, won't work this way. You must turn each zone on individually. Odd.

Ultimately, what this means is the 992 just passes analog signal through without adding any value.

Verified Purchase
I waited several months to review this particular receiver because I continue to be impressed everyday and find something new to justify my purchase. We can talk about the stats or the ability to synchronize your speakers to the optimal listening experience, but I won't bore you with that. Audiophile or not, you will not go wrong with this one. Movies look and sound great. Games on the PS3 sound impressive. Listening to music (Zone 2) in the backyard on my outdoor wall mounted speakers while the kids play on PS3 inside (Zone 1) is a breath of fresh air. Not to mention it is connected wirelessly to my server and the internet. I can control it on my Droid X (Bluetooth connection with the Android App) on one hand while pushing my lawnmower with the other. What convinced me that you cannot go wrong with this impressive receiver was 2 things. 1- the clarity of the human voice through the center speaker. I can actually listen to bass pounding action flicks and still clearly hear every word said. I don't know how Onkyo did it, but I am glad they did. Sometimes, you want to watch a movie late at night without waking up the kids. No more Closed Caption need it. You can hear the voices clearly even at low volume. 2- My surround speakers are 10 years old and installed in the ceiling. I was planning to replace them because I could barely hear them. Well, Onkyo saved me some $$. The speakers are back to life...so much so that my wife swears she hears voices behind her. I had to prove to her it was the 10 year old speakers. So if you want quality and don't mind paying for it...the choice is clear and simple... Onkyo TX-NR929 is the way to go.
