The Onkyo TX-SR307 Home Theater Receiver - Expanding the Scope of Entry-Level Home Entertainment

In budget-conscious times such as these, Onkyo's track record of value for money is more relevant than ever. Now, with the TX-SR307 home theater receiver, Onkyo brings unprecedented levels of performance and connectivity to the entry level. On the video side, the TX-SR307 can receive up to three 1080p resolution video sources via HDMI--think Blu-Ray Disc, PlayStation, and HD broadcasts--and send pristine video to your compatible high-definition display. When it comes to audio, a suite of Audyssey technologies work to match the sound output to your listening space. The TX-SR307 is compatible with your iPod® or other MP3 player, via a front panel input. All those compressed audio files will sound far better thanks to onboard Music Optimizer technology. Rounding out this versatile system are four new gaming modes that allow you to customize the audio to your chosen game type.

Includes a suite of Audyssey Technologies
(Shown in silver)

Superior Video Technology for a Superior Display

Onkyo's HDMI Pass-Thru for connecting up to three video sources for output to a high-definition display is designed to take video to the next level. The TX-SR307 takes up to three HDMI video inputs from sources such as Blu-ray Disc players, DVD players, gaming consoles, and set-top boxes, and delivers the output to a compatible high-definition display. Video is passed in its native resolution—right up to 1080p—from Blu-ray Disc, PlayStation games, or HD broadcasts.

A suite of Audyssey Technologies for the Ideal Listening Environment

The TX-SR307 has three Audyssey technologies to help create the most suitable listening environment for your home. First, there is Audyssey 2EQ™ for Room Acoustic Correction. The TX-SR307 uses Audyssey 2EQ to counter distortion created by walls, furniture, and other objects.

Microphone for Audyssey Technologies
This technology detects speaker distance, and then sets levels, delays, and crossovers, while also measuring room acoustics. Compared to one-position room correction systems, Audyssey 2EQ covers a much wider listening area. Moreover, it corrects problems in both frequency response and time domain (where most of the problems lie) across the entire listening area. The results are immediately obvious—a clear, well-balanced, and natural sound.

Second is Audyssey Dynamic Volume Control. This technology allows you to set the volume level that you want and keep it there, without having to constantly adjust it. By anticipating sudden spikes and dips in the audio soundtrack and compensating for them in real time, Audyssey Dynamic Volume ensures consistent volume levels, regardless of the content you’re enjoying. Thanks to Audyssey Dynamic Volume, quiet dialogue is easier to pick up, loud passages retain their impact, and commercials are less intrusive.

Third is Audyssey Dynamic EQ™ for Loudness Correction. In professional sound studios, music and movies are recorded at reference levels far louder than what is typical for home listening. As a result, when you play audio content at a low volume on a standard home theater receiver, the bass disappears, voices change in timbre, and the surround soundstage loses definition. To counteract this audio deterioration, Audyssey Dynamic EQ continuously adjusts frequency response and surround levels to produce the ideal balance for a given volume level.

Features for Every Member of Your Home

There are four game modes for more thrilling action for the gamer in your family. A new addition to Onkyo home theater, these four gaming modes create an experience with more realism and impact. You can select from Rock, Sports, Action, or Role Playing Game (RPG) to match your gaming content.

There is a front panel audio input for portable devices for music lover in your family. You can connect an iPod® or other MP3 player to the A/V receiver’s front panel for playback. Your player’s compressed digital music files receive a quality boost thanks to the TX-SR307’s Music Optimizer technology.

There is a music optimizer to support compressed digital music files for the audiophile in your family. While MP3 or AAC files may sound fine on a portable digital player, the limitations of these compressed files can be exposed when played back through a home entertainment system. Onkyo has designed onboard Music Optimizer technology to improve the quality of the compressed audio signals. Compressed music loses a substantial amount of bit information at higher frequencies, so the Music Optimizer technology works to overcome this limitation and enhance audio quality.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Basic, but High End Features are Funk, May 3, 2009
By
ilande (New Orleans, LA - USA) - See all my reviews
The advantage to this receiver (as well as the 507) is the depth fits most standard cabinets. This was my primary reason for looking at this receiver. I believe Onkyo is a good brand, and this receiver is better than my last, but it suffers in the high end features.

The HDMI passthrough is bunk. It does not look at the audio through the HDMI, which I specifically asked about and was misinformed. NO AUDIO THROUGH HDMI! You must attach a seperate audio in cable, which is not a big deal but for two reasons. 1) this receiver only has two optical inputs and one coaxial audio inputs (so only three surround audio inputs, and no popular product right now using optical, so you really only have two surround inputs) and 2) The inputs are not assignable to the HDMI, so you actually only have one optical input that will work while your HDMI pass through is working. Essentially, if you use HDMI through this unit, you are restricted to one optical audio input and the other is dedicated to "CD" so you can run a separate HDMI cable to your TV, but this defeats the entire purpose of HDMI on the receiver. Not a big deal to me, but may be a deal breaker for you. So, to repeat, and summarize, HDMI INPUTS ON RECEIVER ARE NOT FUNCTIONAL ENOUGH FOR YOU TO EFFECTIVELY USE THEM.

The price is great. $240 for a receiver with two optical audio inputs and an onkyo name? Works for me. This guy will NOT be future proof, and I will have to replace it if I want to have more than two surround sound sources, but that will be years from now, and I am now wise enough to know that IF YOU WANT TO HAVE TRULY GREAT VIDEO/AUDIO, YOU NEED TO BUILD A DEDICATED CLOSET IN YOUR HOUSE BECAUSE NO TELEVISION CABINET FITS MASSIVE HIGH END COMPONENTS, ONLY CONSUMER VERSIONS WITHOUT THE HIGH END FEATURES. I have my television floating on the wall with a tube running in the wall hiding the wires, and I have a beautiful setup, but I can't find components that will fit! I should have had a built-in placed during construction (NEED LOTS OF DEPTH!) or I should have ran the wires to the closet and dedicated it, but then you have the problem of IR-signals...

Also, don't buy this unit for the microphone. It doesn't work at all. Perhaps this is because the instructions ask you to place all the speakers on the floor for calibration, and mine are installed flush in the ceiling and are not coming out. Basically the microphone won't work for high end users. Too bad.

I'd return it, but I can't get anything better for this price, and if I spend more money ALL of the receivers have a larger depth which will NOT fit into any television stand (and believe me... I looked for over a year!)

Great beginning receiver, works well, powers speakers to a reasonably loud volume, high end features are bunk, and you can't use more than two surround sources with this guy. Hope this helps!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not happy, July 11, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It's my own fault. I didn't fully understand all the technical terms.
The unit has pass through HDMI connections which require additional audio connections to the component inputs from the TV to the receiver. Splitters are required because there is only one audio output from the TV and three component devices supported. I wanted to avoid the extra audio cables. Should have purchased a different (more expensive) model.

5.0 out of 5 stars great product at a great price, February 23, 2010

can't complain about the purchase. easy setup...good features. the only downside is that it doesn't convert component to hdmi so you have to run a component cable as well as hdmi to your tv. for me this won't be a problem as soon as i upgrade my dvd player to one with hdmi out. the person that complained about buying extra cables...well it's pretty simple. if you wan't digital surround sound you need some sort of digital input. technically yes this signal could be sent through the hdmi cable but i prefer keeping my audio and video on separate cables. it makes it a lot easier to diagnose a problem if one arises. i found two dynex fiber optic cables on ebay for 2.99 a piece and used an old, yet high quality, shielded stereo rca audio cable...split it into two and used one length for the digital coaxial input and the other for my subwoofer. the sound is great...i just wish you could edit the names of the inputs so it would say "xbox" on the receiver when i'm gaming but if that's my biggest concern then you can imagine the quality of this product.
