Instead he examines the main online options for chatters, including the chat rooms of proprietary services such as America Online, free areas such as Internet Relay Chat (IRC), and role-playing game areas. He looks at bulletin-board systems, Web conferencing, and virtual places. Video-enhanced chat also gets its moment in the spotlight as Powers discusses CUSeeMe and VideoPhone. However, the bulk of his efforts goes toward discussing the things beginning online chatters often understand least and need most--the social aspects and nuances of interaction by modem. He looks, for example, at the considerations that should go into screen-name selection and the elements of online etiquette. Powers shows how a lack of knowledge of both written and unwritten rules can lead to embarrassment and explains how to avoid accidentally making mistakes. The chapter ":How Not to Be an Online Embarrassment" is excellent, as is the examination of how to identify and cope with different types of online pests. Enclosed is a CD-ROM full of software to expand and enhance online chat. --Elizabeth Lewis
