Book Description

October 1999
Online trading is quick and easy; profitable online investing takes time.

The Boom in online trading has helped ordinary investors take control of their financial lives. With a click of your mouse, you can buy and sell stocks from more than 100 online brokers offering executions as low as $5.00 per transaction. However, it's also important to remember that even though online trading can save you time and money, it does not take the homework out of making sound investment decisions. Before you trade, you still need to know why you are buying or selling, and the risks involved. In ONLINE INVESTING THE SMART WAY, not only does Stephen Littauer cover all the basics of investing in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, he also shows you how to put together a complete portfolio of investments without the high commissions, gabby brokers, and hard-to- execute trades you may have experienced in the past.

In this essential primer, you'll learn:

How to get started
Who the best online brokers are and how to choose one
What the best online sites are for investors
How to use your computer to screen for new opportunities
How to identify -- and avoid -- online scams
How to buy stock online directly from companies
How to buy U.S. Treasuries online through TreasuryDirect
How to get started in day trading, including its pitfalls
and opportunities

If you're looking for solid advice and an action plan to show you how to invest successfully online, look no further. Follow the smart strategies outlined in ONLINE INVESTING THE SMART WAY and reap the rewards millions of investors are already enjoying!

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The growing popularity (and notoriety) of day trading has focused attention on computerized trading; but online investing is an attractive option for many investors simply because of its speed, convenience, and lower trading charges. One estimate shows that nearly 30 percent of all trading is now being done online. For those still on the sidelines, Littauer's primer is a perfect resource for helping get started. The author of other "investing the smart way" guides on stocks and mutual funds, Littauer identifies the best Internet Web sites for investors, recommends online brokers, shows how to use computer programs to "screen" for investment selections, offers tips on investing in the online environment, and warns against online scams. He compares stocks, bonds, and mutual funds as investment options; and he explains how to make online purchases of stocks through direct purchase and dividend reinvestment plans. Littauer also describes the TreasuryDirect program for purchasing government securities and showcases online mutual fund "supermarkets." And, yes, he does devote a chapter to day trading. 5.0 out of 5 stars This Book is Must Reading for Online Investors!, October 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Online Investing the Smart Way (Paperback)
Online Investing the Smart Way provides a wealth of information for investors who want to take advantage of what online investing offers. I found excellent internet sites for investors, advice on how to choose a good online broker (with information provided about some of the best). The chapter devoted to screening for investment opportunities shows how to use the same tools that professionals use -- and where to find them at several top Web sites. I also liked the material about online scams and how to avoid them, as well as many helpful investing tips. The book includes a wealth of information that includes stock market strategies, ways to minimize and defer taxes, retirement plan strategies, day trading, and much much more. The author covers all the basics of investing in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, and shows how to put together a complete portfolio of investments without paying high commissions and putting up with stock salesmen. This great book should help a lot of people invest more profitably.

4.0 out of 5 stars Revolutionized Investing, August 12, 2009
This review is from: Online Investing the Smart Way (Paperback)
The Internet revolutionized in investing and empowered individual investors. This book provides readers with resourceful websites such as Microsoft MoneyCentral, Morningstar, The Motley Fool, and many others. It also assists readers with selecting an online broker.

The investment advice is good, but it is pretty basic. To be a successful investor, a person has to learn more than what this book offers. Because this book was written in 1999, some of the information is outdated.
