Excellent, unique story,
By Shannon "jfaction" (Lafayette, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Only the Cat Saw (Books for Young Readers) (Paperback)
My 2 year old loves this book. I like that it is different from the cookie-cutter children's stories out there. There are no nonsense words or oversimplification. The story is about an evening/night on a farm, and what the various people are doing at different times through the night. I especially enjoyed the episode of the mother nursing her baby during the night. As a nursing mother, I am always looking for books that depict real family events in an attachment parenting perspective. The illustrations are excellent; story provides a paragraph on what the family is doing, then an illustrated page of what the cat sees during the same time. My daughter likes to point things on the page that the cat saw, and this is such a natural, nice way to involve a child in the story. Kudos to the author.

A Must Have Book for Children,
By Marcy (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Only the Cat Saw (Books for Young Readers) (Paperback)
I recently purchased this book for my toddler, and my only disappointment is that I waited until she was 20 months old to do so! The book is beautifully illustrated with a wonderful storyline and theme. Children will love the gorgeous depictions of the various things that only the cat sees in the middle of the night (a mommy nursing, fireflies, an owl), and parents will love the simplicity and beauty of the book.An added plus is a wonderful illustration of a mother nursing her child in the middle of the night. Hushabye, Baby Blue ..another book with a wonderful storyline and beautiful illustrations, including one of a mother nursing her baby. If you are a nursing mom, both Hushabye, Baby Blue (a board book that will withstand lots of abuse) and Only The Cat Saw (a paperback) are *essential* additions to your child's library. Regardless of whether your child is nursing, these books are perfect for your baby and toddler.

This sweet, simple story has incredibly beautiful illustrations. It includes a picture of a mom nursing her baby. Its just a natural part of life --just as all the other things that only the cat saw. I bought it for my daughter and liked it so much that I bought 3 more for gifts.

Sweet and wonderfully illustrated,

The illustrations make this book as the text is very simple and quite repetitive- the humans are busy with the family, but the cat pays attention. The cat watches a rain storm, a hunting owl, the roosters, the nighttime= all the wonderful things that cats notice. Finally, in the morning the cat falls asleep and the little girl starts noticing things the other family members miss.
There is an older girl- maybe 6, and a baby boy so this would be a great story for someone who has a new baby sibling. My favorite human scene is when the mom gets up during the night to feed the baby brother and has a look of peace and contentment- every mother's favorite part of baby nights. I would have given the book 5 stars if the baby got to snuggle in bed with his mom- it would have seemed just a bit more real. I still recommend the book highly.

This is a wonderful book -- beautiful, often dramatic illustrations and a simple story that conveys a sense of wonder in a direct, fun, warm way. Our three-year-old boy has loved this book since we got it when he was about one, and I always enjoy reading it too. One of our favorites -- deserves to be a classic. Truly inspired in every way.

One of my daughter's (one year old) favorites,
By A Customer
This review is from: Only the Cat Saw (Books for Young Readers) (Paperback)
While the family goes about their normal nighttime business (dinner, getting ready for bed, sleeping, pre-dawn breastfeeding, and so on), the nocturnal family cat sees the little miracles that the others miss (the sunset, fireflies and a meteor, to name three). My one year old daughter LOVES this book; she glows with anticipation with every page that ends with that cliffhanger, "... so only the cat saw..." The artistry is beautiful, and the ending is absolutely wonderful. (As is the little epilogue image of the cat, happy and asleep after his long and eventful night.)

I have probably purchased more than 23 of these books to give away to new mothers as well as toddlers, oh, and cat lovers! I find that boys as well as girls love this book and the magnificent illustrations. "Wow! Cool!" were exclamations from eight and ten year old boys watching the cat in the storm, with the owl, with the chickens, and just overall. The entire book is authentic and poignant. Thank goodness I have 11 more children to buy this book for this Christmas!! And I always keep a few on hand just in case.

Only The Cat Saw was always my little brothers favorite book! The illustrations beautifully depict the events of a realistic family and more importantly their cat during the night. The cat sees all sorts of interesting things that children love to point out over and over again. It is a cozy book to send anyone off to dreamland with.

My almost 2 year old son and I love this book. The illustrations are full of detail and color and are very realistic. I especially appreciate the story content (including Amy's night trip to the bathroom and baby Sam's breastfeeding!). This story captures the night routines of a family (comforting for children to see) as well as the night activities of the cat. I recommend this book! Thanks to the author for those scenes she had to fight for....

I bought this book for my daughter because I heard it contained positive breastfeeding imagery. There is one page where the mother nurses the baby in a rocking chair. It is absolutely beautiful, as is the entire book. I was pleased to see the rural setting that reminded me of my own childhood. A gorgeous book for anyone, whether interested in the nursing scene or not!
