The Shirts released 3 albums between 1978 and 1980.

1978 -Self titled
1979 - Street Light Shine
1980 - Inner sleeve

The Shirts then took a "short" break and returned 26 years later with this album :)

Anyone approaching this album as a fan of the previous releases must keep a few things in mind. First, there is no way that a group could possibly return from a 26 year break and pick up where they left off. Also, the artists have grown and changed, the music scene itself has changed beyond recognition, and we too (the listeners) have changed.

When I listen to the original releases by the shirts, there's a lot of "nostalgia" happening. While they certainly had a lot of musical mis-steps and never truly delivered a release without flaws, their early music has a deep connection to a "scene" and a "time" that unfortunately no longer exists. So, realizing that this "new" release ("Only The Dead Know Brooklyn") will obviously lack any such "extras" what could the Shirts possibly have to offer in 2006?

I was immediately surprised by the quality of the packaging. cardboard CD slip-cover, glossy booklet, and an excellent "manhole cover" CD label design :) I was also surprised (and saddened) to find that Annie Golden was no longer a member of the group. I had always considered her vocals to be the "main attraction" on the early releases. But, it's true that the Shirts were more than "just" Annie Golden so I was ready to give these guys (and new gals) a shot.

The first track, "spanish steps" kicks things off with a strong musical statement that the Shirts of 2006 are simply a bunch of veteran musicians and music lovers who are going to play whatever they FEEL like playing. This isn't an effort to "revive" the past.

After a long time of being out of the recording business, it isn't often that they get a band back together, and come up with some GREAT new material. I guess The Shirts are the exception. Despite the fact that Annie Golden no longer fronts the band, the tracks are fast, and intense, and so typical of the original Shirts style, yet they still have a new and modern sound.

You would think that being produced by a small record company, that the casing and liner notes would be on the minimalist side, but such is not the case. In fact, the complete opposite is true. Great liner notes with credits and lyrics, and an additional 'Outer Sleeve' ( Get it?)!

If you are looking for Annie Golden and want to hear her sing again, watch the last episode of Orange is the New Black on Netflix. Magical.

Who knew The Shirts released a new CD in 2006? I was about to purchase or go see if it was available for download and maybe I WILL give it a listen for fun
I thought the artwork was odd with no photo of the band - but aha - now I get it...

The Shirts without Annie Golden ain't The Shirts.
That's like Blondie without Debbie Harry or The Pretenders without Chrissie Hynde or Siouxsie and The Banshees without Siouxsie!
