Book Description

January 1, 1996
Only Fear Dies is about the real possibility that we can free ourselves of unhappiness, which is another way of talking about enlightenment. This potential for freedom is the heart of all the work of the author, Australian spiritual master, Barry Long. And this is one of the most important of his books. Long describes in his inimitable and vivid way how unhappiness seizes hold of us from birth, how it forms our personalities, dominates our history, is manipulated by the media and chases us to death and beyond. The root of unhappiness is fear - but the good news is that in the conscious or divine life, fear dies. In 'dying for life' we realize at last that only fear dies. Written 15 years before Eckhart Tolle's world best-seller 'The Power of Now', Barry Long's book covers similar ground and has been hugely influential.

About the Author

By the end of his life Barry Long was recognised by many thousands of people around the world as a genuine spiritual master. Born in 1926 in Australia, he was in his thirties before he realized there was more to life than worldly success. He was the editor of a Sydney Sunday newspaper - 'Truth' - but it wasn't the media's truth he was interested in. Leaving everything behind Australia, he sought the truth of life, at first alone in the Himalayas and then for ten years in London. He started teaching public meetings in 1982 and year by year more and more people discovered him.

More About the Author

Barry Long (1926-2003) was a writer and spiritual teacher with an original and challenging way of communicating age-old truths.

Born and raised in Australia he started out as a junior journalist and became the youngest-ever editor of a Sydney Sunday tabloid, somewhat prophetically called 'Truth'. At that time spiritual truth was far from his mind, but in his early 30s, the ambitious and successful family man began to question all his values. For some years his inner pain and suffering increased. Eventually, in 1965, he fled Australia and went to India. After many adventures, alone in the Himalayas he experienced what he called a 'mystic death', or the realization of immortality. This was the real beginning of his journey towards 'the unfathomable mystery of God or Life and that other divine mystery of true love between man and woman'.

He wrote of his insights and realizations and for thirty years gave talks and seminars in many countries. He inspired and guided many thousands of men and women without wanting to create a big organization or attract personal fame. He was concerned with the individual, not society. He taught that the way to truth and the reality of love is through direct experience, not belief or imagination; and that freedom comes from taking responsibility for one's own life. He was fulfilled by the prospect that one day someone might hear the truth from him and be able to live it. Evidently very many did. His legacy may be seen in their lives and in the work of some of those he inspired, including other teachers, notably Eckhart Tolle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly original insights into the cause of unhappiness, March 19, 2002
By
This review is from: Only Fear Dies: A Book of Liberation (Paperback)
Barry Long's words have got a quality that penetrated me deeply. i found that even when i had finished this book, I kept going over what he had said and saw that it was all the truth. I've never heard anyone talk about the personality like this before, at first i was intrigued. After a while it actually gets a little uncomfortable, it made me look at myself so deeply, more deeply than i ever have before. It gave me insight to how my emotions really work and after reading this I no longer feel as though there is some force beyond me that controls my life and makes me unhappy. This book changed me! d I'm amazed by how much freer i am, it really works! Who doesn't want to be happier? Everyone should read this book, it's absolutely brilliant. Barry must be either totally enlightened or a genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Barry Long's Darkness will show you the light., April 3, 2000
This review is from: Only Fear Dies: A Book of Liberation (Paperback)
Barry Long relentlessly hammers you with Truth. When I read this book, I periodically flipped as he pointed out the obvious to the oblivious with deadly accuracy. From guiding us not to tell our sad story, through the crazed media minefields, to the slithering souls waiting to incarnate, Master Long will do something to you. It is up to you to find out what....

5.0 out of 5 stars No compromise in Truth, September 6, 2005
This review is from: Only Fear Dies: A Book of Liberation (Paperback)
I haven't finished this book yet but am blown away by Barry's directness, integrity and the deep resonance of Truth in his words. This truly is Wisdom for the Western mind. No gurus, no mantras, no spiritual baggage - just the Truth, straight and simple. How the world needs this now....

But Barry's message is only for those who are ready to hear it. I imagine his uncompromising directness and 'zero tolerance' spirituality will deter those who are not prepared for it. Not many people seem ready to hear that they've no right to be unhappy, or that they're entirely responsible for their unhappiness.

A brilliant book. Thank you so much Barry Long.
