Book Description

August 1, 2005
Penniless widow Laura McKay was determined to succeed on her own, but when an arsonist threatened her deaf daughter's safety, she was compelled to rely on firefighter Ryan Flanagan, the high school football hero who'd never noticed her as a shy underclassman.

Physically fearless and an expert at avoiding romantic commitment, Ryan had nearly become his own worst enemy. But in the flames there's only one enemy: time, which just might be running out for Laura, unless Ryan's courage...and love...can withstand the test of fire.

More About the Author

I realized I wanted to be a writer at age eight, when I read my first Nancy Drew novel, The Secret of the Old Clock. Most little girl reach the end of that book wanting to be Nancy. I wanted to be the person who created the story!
The dream lay hidden for years while I became a teacher, married, had children...all the usual things. But eventually it re-surfaced, and I began to write, beginning with short children's stories for Sunday school take-home papers. It seemed a long time until that first acceptance, but eventually I began to sell. After some three hundred published short stories, I finally found the courage to work on the novel I'd always wanted to write.
Thirty-some published novels later, I still feel the same excitement every time I begin a new book--a mix of not believing I can do it combined with an overwhelming urge to see the story on the page.
A lifetime spent in rural Pennsylvania and my own Pennsylvania Dutch roots eventually led me to the books I'm writing now about the Amish. The Pleasant Valley Amish series from Berkley Books are longer, more complex emotional stories with Amish main characters, while my forthcoming HQN suspense novels are more adventure-filled books set in Pennsylvania Dutch country. I'm also writing a Love Inspired series, The Bodine Family, set on the South Carolina coast where we have a second home.
When I'm not writing, I'm busy with church activities, traveling, and spending time with my three children and six beautiful grandchildren.

This book was by far THE best in the Flanagan series; that is the best in the ones I have read thus far(and I have read the books about Gabe, Brendan, Seth, Fiona).
The plot read almost like a suspense story at times. The depth of emotions experienced by all was totally in line with Ryan's character as developed in previous books although this book can stand on its own. It was interesting also to get Mandy's life-story and I thought that it was very real and practical. I totally agreed with who the villain turned out to be because I found that he was too smarmy for me.
The attraction between Laura and Ryan was there from the get-go and I liked the progression throughout the book.
Of course I liked the spiritual element and how God was working throughout the story all along. I am off to get Terry's story now but I highly recommend this book. :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars The first of this genre that I have read and I liked it!!!, December 2, 2006
I was hesitant to read a "romance novel" but tried this one and found it very enjoyable. The writing is well done, the characters are believable and the situations are true to life. I have known real people who mere in families like the Flanagans and also I have know real people like Laura the single mom who is the main character. To me this book rings true to life, and I appreciated that fact.
The dialog is not "cheezy." The spiritual elements are not at all preachy, but more in step with my own understanding of how God works as we wrestle with understanding life and other people.
I need not relate the theme and plot as others have done so, but I just wanted to add my two cents worth. As a man I liked this book and give it five stars. I plan to read more novels in the "Love Inspired" series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keeps you thinking!, January 15, 2012
Laura McKay was a widow with a deaf daughter, trying to make their way in a world that seems big, cold and expensive! Ryan Flanagan was a firefighter, trying to find his own way in a family of firefighters, afraid to make a mistake that could hurt someone. Both had turned away from God in their own way. Laura struggled to turn the old building into a saleable apartment and shop so that she could pay for Mandy's cochlear implant surgery. There's an arsonist afoot, can Ryan find out who it is and stop them before his new boss arrests Laura?
I found this book especially interesting,Having had both had my husband pass away when my daughter was 2 and having friends on both sides of the cochlear implant debate.
