I read this book years ago, and still remember it well. Stories range from
mountain men killing bears using a fishhook (you have to read the book), to Native Americans using clubs. Ahh the good old days. Of course, a lot of these episodes end up with the bear winning. Hence the title.

I think I'll reorder and read it again. If I remember right, there was a Padre in California who killed a Grizzly with a stone. Stories like this always amaze me.
