Book Description

February 1996

Escaping the ravages of the Civil War, a gently reared lady must leave behind everything she knows -- and trust her life and her future to a dangerous gunfighter with a passion for vengeance.

A team of prize Arabian horses is all that Willow Moran has left -- and Caleb Black is the only man who can help her reach her brother in the Colorado Rockies. But she fears this stranger who burns to avenge the wrongs of treacherous men. For Caleb is as wild and unpredictable as the uncivilized land he loves. Yet, though she challenges him at every turn, the spirited southern lady knows this proud, enigmatic loner is her destiny. And no matter what peril awaits, they must face it together -- for Willow has become a fever in Caleb′s blood ... awakening a need so fierce that he would defeat the devil himself to possess her.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this tedious historical romance, Lowell ( Tell Me No Lies ) gives barely enough plot to keep a short story moving. Willow Moran, a West Virginian who lost her parents and most of her possessions during the Civil War, is traveling west with her remaining valuables--five Arabian horses--to find her brother Matt, who is prospecting for gold. Her guide from Denver to the San Juan mountains is former Army scout Caleb Black who, unbeknownst to Willow, also is hunting Matt; on her deathbed, after bearing an illegitimate baby, Caleb's sister named Matt as her seducer. The largely uneventful journey, complicated only by ruffians who are pursuing them (to steal Willow's horses and finish a fight begun in Denver with Caleb), occupies a substantial portion of the book: Willow and Caleb spend much of their time riding, eating and lusting after each other. By the time the hero, ``with a silent curse at his unruly desires,'' indulges in yet another assessment of the heroine, wondering ``how her hair would feel spilling over his naked skin,'' the reader is likely to be silently cursing right along with him--and brother Matt isn't even close to being on the horizon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensual romance in the Colorado wilderness., April 1, 2001
This review is from: Only His (Mass Market Paperback)
If you're a fan of romance, you definitely need to discover Elizabeth Lowell, and "Only His" is a great place to start. This is the first in a series of 4 novels about the Moran siblings and life in the Colorado wilderness after the Civil War. Lowell always does great research, but her true forte is creating unique and wonderful characters. This is the story of Willow Moran, the only daughter in the Moran family, who following the death of her parents goes in search of one of her brothers, Matt Moran, in the Colorado Rockies. As her guide she hires Caleb Black, a tall, dark and handsome man who, unbeknownst to Willow, has his own score to settle with Matt Moran. Despite Caleb's misgivings, Willow handles the harrowing and dangerous journey across the wilderness surprisingly well, and the two are increasingly drawn to one another. Only Caleb knows that there is certain tragedy ahead when and if they find Matt.

Both of the main characters are very well-drawn, and Lowell masterfully builds the sexual tension between them. The love scenes are steamy and the action scenes are very compelling. I ususally would skim through gun battles, but Lowell does such a good job that you won't want to miss them. You'll be sorry to see this book end. Luckily it's just the beginning of the Moran saga!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Characters, Good Story!, June 27, 2002
This review is from: Only His (Mass Market Paperback)
I strongly disagree with the reviewers who claim there is little or no plot to this wonderful tale of 2 strangers; a somewhat naive but intelligent young woman & her hired travel guide, a hardened gunfighter, who both seek the same man for different reasons. Boring, never!! Romantic, absolutely!

Their journey across the Colorado Rockies, with the woman's prized Arabian horses in tow, is wonderfully descriptive & full of adventure & hardship. While the plot is not particularly complex, I found it to be an enjoyable account of a long & arduous journey. It also provides a framework for the portraits of the 2 protagonists. The characters of this extraordinary woman & man, & the development of their relationship, make reading this book worthwhile. Willow Moran is bright, spirited, couragous & caring. Caleb Black may be obsessed with revenge, but he is also a man with a stong sense of integrity & a very sweet & tender side. Both of them together are dynamite!

I like Caleb & Willow as human beings, complex & out of the ordinary. And I loved reading about the Arabian horses...an added plus. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars _Only His_ is REALLY good!, September 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Only His (Mass Market Paperback)
Having read countless romance novels, Ms. Lovell does a great job making the characters interesting... and not shallow. The diagloge is well-written, and the descriptive passages of the mountains are magnicifient. The romance is pretty hot too!

However, the main female character, Willow, is a bit overdramatic and dependent on her MUCH stronger male counterpart. The interaction between Willow and Caleb is pretty sterotypical. This accounts for the 4 star rating behind stronger, and more inventive books by other authors. Overall a really good read. I have already purchased the next two in the series... hope they prove to be as exciting.
