Editorial Reviews

Review

The Feelies hit the jackpot with their third album, a warm, inviting collection that finally addresses the endless Lou Reed comparisons with a cover of his What Goes On. Mercer and Million's previously tense guitar power becomes attractive shadings, implying a louder approach without always delivering it, while the Demeski/Sauter rhythm team takes the lead throughout; his steady drums and her low, rolling performances giving the guitarists something to play around instead of dominate. The Feelies always make this tranced-out rock their own, but this time around it's as quietly thrilling, if not more so, than ever. --All Music Guide --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

Product Description

2008 reissue of 1988 album, Only Life. In 1988, the Feelies signed to a major label and released the album Only Life on A&M Records. The lineup was the same as The Good Earth, and Mercer and Million again handled production duties. The disc was a critical favorite, coming in at #27 on the Village Voice's 1988 Pazz & Jop critics' poll, beating out such noteworthy competition as R.E.M.'s major-label debut, Green, as well as the debut efforts by Jane's Addiction and the Sugarcubes. The band has announced reunion shows that will occur in early July 2008, including shows at Maxwells, Hoboken, NJ (July 1 and 2, 2008) and opening for Sonic Youth at Battery Park, New York, NY on July 4, 2008. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Feelies' Third Masterpiece, January 27, 2001
By
This review is from: Only Life (Audio CD)
The Feelies have three incredible albums under their belt. Crazy Rhytms, their first album, has and incredible sound with some of their best songs. It is my favorite of their albums. Their second album, The Good Earth almost equals their first album. Only Life, their third album, is between The Good Earth and Crazy Rhytms. It's their second best. It's worth buying just for the cover of the Velvet Underground's What Goes On. It also has some of the Feelies most melodic and best songs. My personal favorites on the album are It's Only Life, Too Much, Higher Ground and Too Far Gone. Al the songs are great. I would strongly reccomend picking up all three of their albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid Album from a Great Band, April 23, 2000
This review is from: Only Life (Audio CD)
One might be tempted to say that after their classic "The Good Earth" that "Only Life" is a bit of a letdown. Actually, its a very good album in its own right and solidifies The Feelies reputation as one of the best American bands nobody has ever heard of. The title track, "Deep Fascination" and "For Awhile" are the best songs, but the album is consistently good. The cover of the Velvet Underground's "What Goes On" comes along at the end, letting you know where they're coming from musically. Fans of Luna's dreaminess in particular should hear this band. They may never go back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Neo punk masterwork, April 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Only Life (Audio CD)
One of the best albums of the mid to late 80's finds the Feelies in excellent form. Probably the best rendition of Lou Reed's "What Goes On" aside from the VU original that I have ever heard. Their simple chord progressions make for catchy, memorable songs. One album that I keep coming back to year after year, and it always sounds new and fresh. If you like the Feelies (or the Velvets), this is a great album for you.
