5.0 out of 5 stars The Feelies' Third Masterpiece
The Feelies have three incredible albums under their belt. Crazy Rhytms, their first album, has and incredible sound with some of their best songs. It is my favorite of their albums. 3.0 out of 5 stars not their best
This is an album with plenty of good tunes on it, particulary the title track and deep fascination. An old girlfriend gave me this on cassette back in '91 because she didn't like it. As a VU fan it really turned me on to this band. Too bad some of their better works like "The Good Earth" are out of print.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Feelies' Third Masterpiece, January 27, 2001

The Feelies have three incredible albums under their belt. Crazy Rhytms, their first album, has and incredible sound with some of their best songs. It is my favorite of their albums. Their second album, The Good Earth almost equals their first album. Only Life, their third album, is between The Good Earth and Crazy Rhytms. It's their second best. It's worth buying just for the cover of the Velvet Underground's What Goes On. It also has some of the Feelies most melodic and best songs. My personal favorites on the album are It's Only Life, Too Much, Higher Ground and Too Far Gone. Al the songs are great. I would strongly reccomend picking up all three of their albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid Album from a Great Band, April 23, 2000
This review is from: Only Life (Audio CD)
One might be tempted to say that after their classic "The Good Earth" that "Only Life" is a bit of a letdown. Actually, its a very good album in its own right and solidifies The Feelies reputation as one of the best American bands nobody has ever heard of. The title track, "Deep Fascination" and "For Awhile" are the best songs, but the album is consistently good. The cover of the Velvet Underground's "What Goes On" comes along at the end, letting you know where they're coming from musically. Fans of Luna's dreaminess in particular should hear this band. They may never go back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Neo punk masterwork, April 19, 2004

One of the best albums of the mid to late 80's finds the Feelies in excellent form. Probably the best rendition of Lou Reed's "What Goes On" aside from the VU original that I have ever heard. Their simple chord progressions make for catchy, memorable songs. One album that I keep coming back to year after year, and it always sounds new and fresh. If you like the Feelies (or the Velvets), this is a great album for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Feelies Do Velvet Underground, February 16, 2002

This is another great album to play guitar to, but it's simpler than "Good Earth." This album celebrates the Feelies' obvious love for Velvet Underground, a musical reference perfectly obvious long before their rousing cover of "What Goes On" closes the album. There's loads of classic Feelies' chord music, with the vocals tilted into a Lou Reedesque direction, but still very understated in the genuine Feelies fashion. There's great ersatz Mo Tucker drumming (do people realize just how great she was?).

If you can find this album, expect another collection that is as cohesive as "The Good Earth" but which is musically simpler and probably not quite as good. But listen to it a number of times; you will find that it's better than you first thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars As Velvet As It Gets, June 27, 2009
This review is from: Only Life (Audio CD)
Bare none one of the very best indie bands from the genisis of indie bands & Only Life is a perfect example of their greatness. If you were on any East Coast campus in the late 80's, you are well aware of New Jersey's best band (next to Yo La Tengo) Yes....... another one of countless bands inspired by the hallmark Velvet Underground, but the Feelies are surely in a class of their own. Some of the best words & music ever written & If you don't fully love this band I'm sorry you're nuttier than Mr. Peanut.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great music for the low-key alternative music lover, August 21, 1999

This is a disc that you put in your player for the long drive. Fantastic roadtrip music. The brilliant basist of my old rock and roll band introduced me to The Feelies. Just a great CD that never gets old. Ever.

Just a nice, relaxing album that you can listen to over and over again. I've had it for over 10 years and it continues to be one of my favorite 50 recordings among the 1,000+ that I own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Criminally under-rated, December 2, 1999
This review is from: Only Life (Audio CD)
Next to REM, this is arguably the best band of the dawning of the alternative era in the early to mid '80's. I own everything the feelies ever did and only wish they were more prolific.

The Lou Reed / VU influences are heavy culminating with a blazing "What Goes On" finale that's incredible.

This is one the best 20 or so records of all time.

When I first heard "Higher Ground" on the radio, quite by accident, I just couldn't get the tune out of my head. Picked up the CD and Whoa! First five songs worth the price of admission, but the entire CD has this nice feel to it that is hard to explain. I tend to play this in my van....and "Higher Ground" is the song I keep returning to. Kind of hypnotic. Try this CD.
