One single track makes this ALL worth buying...,
By
This review is from: Only (Audio CD)
And that track is the live take of, "Love is Not Enough." The total and utter RAW essence of this version of the song, is an absolute IMPERFECT perfection. None of it is done with computers. This is the ACTUAL BAND (as seen live) playing the song in studio. Trent SERIOUSLY needs to release things like this more. If he were to release a band-based album like this, completely raw and imperfect, alot of fans would probably love him more than they already do, for doing so. They actually made the song BETTER by making it IMPERFECT.
Aside from that song that i've already had on repeat for the past 15 minutes, we have yet again another CRAPPY remix of, "The Hand That Feeds." Why Trent decided to put his faith in yet another crappy THTF remix as filler on his 2nd single, is beyond me. This is probably the ONLY (pun not needed) reason NOT to get this single. Then finally, we obviously have the title track, "Only." The really good song, with the really stupid video. Get this version of the cd, as it's less expensive and doesn't contain that stupid assed music video for "Only." It's a waste of visual ability. But the song itself is good. All in all...the MAJOR reason to get this, is for the raw version of, "Love is Not Enough." That track alone, will keep you coming back for more on this cd. And it alone is why i'm giving this cd 5/5 stars. It's just that good! That and "Only" is a good track. Congratulations Trent...you redeemed yourself with this single. It doesn't suck like the "The Hand That Feeds" single did. The only flaw on this single is yet another CRAPPY assed THTF remix. A word of advice Trent...lay off the THTF remixes. The least you could've done is made this single FLAWLESS by putting "Home" on here, instead of that remix. If that were done, this would be a PERFECT single. 2/3 tracks are great. And 5 stars for 1 track being A+++ material. Get this, I highly reccomend it. Especially for track 3.

This is a must-buy for anyone who really enjoyed With Teeth. On it is a smooth remix of the first single, The Hand That Feeds, a studio recording of All The Love In The World, and the new single, Only. If The Hand That Feeds is one of those songs that really grabs you and pulls you into it, I would suggest getting this single along with the first single off of With Teeth (The Hand That Feeds). If you are new to NIN then go buy The Downward Spiral and Ministry's Twitch. Then you can really get into the "industrial groove". haha. Industrial groove....

This was a present for my boyfriend who collects NIN music. When I got it, it was in a flimsy, aftermarket looking case and the artwork did not appear to be original. I doubt this is the way this single was originally sold. If I hadn't had to wait so long to get this to my boyfriend, I would have tried to send it back.

Not bad, but keep an open mind!,

For most "Downward Spiral-era" Nine Inch Nails fans (myself included), this single may come as a bit of a disappointment if you fail to keep an open mind. The most frequent complaint I've heard is that it's "too commercial". While I agree that this single (as well as the album from which it came) are both more radio-friendly than their predecessors, I don't think Trent has lost his touch. However, if you're looking for that rough-edged, angry Trent Reznor found on previous albums like "Broken" or "The Downward Spiral", you won't find him here. In fact, he seems to have changed his entire perspective about himself and his music:
"I'm becoming less defined as days go by Fading away and well, you might say I'm losing focus Kind of drifting into the abstract In terms of how I see myself" Is Trent becoming genuinely disinterested in his music in general? Only time will tell. Nevertheless, I still think this single is well worth the purchase, as it captures a side of Reznor that his fans really haven't seen before.

The "Only [Import Single]" is a great addition to most hard-core Nine Inch Nails fans. "With Teeth" was not accepted nearly as well as his past albums, especially after he hyped his own music. --+-- "Only" is in my opinion a great song. It has the potential to be another "Head Like A Hole" or maybe "Wish," although not as big as say "Closer." This also includes "The Hand That Feeds [DFA Mix]" and "Love Is Not Enough [live]." Although "Love Is Not Enough" is listed as a live song, it is actually taped "live" during a rehearsal secion for the new tour with a handful of people watching on. The only think I reccommend: IFifIFIFIF IF you are going to buy this, spend the same amount and get the German Import Version also called "[Enhanced]" which includes a copy of the video. If you aren't a huge nine inch nails fan, then but "With Teeth" (it's cheap) and think about it. Otherwise, complete your collection and get both.

If only "Only" had a bit more bite for the buck....,
This review is from: Only (Audio CD)
The newest single from NIN has arrived, and despite the fact that it is NIN, it has me annoyed, and for a simple reason. This disc comes with three tracks, the title track being on the With Teeth album (a disc I already own, and have practically wore grooves into since May). This leaves two songs, a DFA remix of Hand That Feeds, and a live version of Love Is Not Enough, two tracks likewise from Teeth. The DFA remix is available on an exclusive vinyl with two other mixes, so having already heard this, the disc lost a bit more merit with me. It's not a bad track, it's just been a bit overplayed in my book, and frankly, if I see one more remix of Hand That Feeds pop up on an official release, I'll go mad, since it has been remixed on the import version of the album as well as on the CD/vinyl of Photek remixes. This leaves Love Is Not Enough. Frankly, I have always loved NIN's live sound, and this is no exception--it sounds much more intense, more human and organic, less mechanical and perfect. The emotion also comes out just that much more, as anyone who has heard the Live album or seen these guys on stage can attest. A decent album cut made that much better, this is a great live rendition, and the only real high point/saving grace of this single.
Not trying to be too much of a griper at the age of 21 and complain without cessation, but this is a real bummer, hot on the heels of the Photek remix of Hand That Feeds (which just doesn't do much for me, despite my love for Modus Operandi and Solaris) especially since it keeps track with the way NIN's imports have been going ever since Halo 13 (Day The World Went Away). Lately, the singles have the title track plus two other cuts that sometimes end up being on the main album later on, or have appeared elsewhere. I remember when singles like Closer To God came out, with GREAT remixes and covers, which sometimes ended up being nearly album-length. Amazon has another version of this listed, which includes the video for "Only" (or did the last time I checked, anyway)as an addition. For anyone who hasn't seen the video, it might be worth waiting for, but I am not too sore about not having it enclosed here. A pretty dull video, not up there with the shock art of "Closer," very tame and marketable. In all, this was worth getting since I am a big NIN buff and collect everything I can get my mitts on, but as a fan, its a bit of a disappointment. The song, while good and fun, isn't really packaged with anything that does it justice, and it really isn't marketed in a way to make it stand out. The single is lame, and the video is atrocious. It really is starting to feel like the management and personnel involved are certain they will make money off the loyal fanbase regardless of what kind of garbage is assembled. This is definitely for the diehards only, as 12 bucks for 3 songs isn't really my idea of a fun purchase. With Teeth, however, was worth the wait to me, and well worth the money invested. Let's just hope these guys haven't tamed down too much on stage for when I see them in Jax this fall.

Another light-weight single from "With Teeth",

"Only", the second single from "With Teeth", has something in common with its predecessor-- its of limited value. I picked it up and was pretty disappointed.
The single itself, "Only", isn't one of the ones I particularly enjoy on the album-- its got a nice enough funky bass line and drum beat, but Reznor's sing-speak "Down In It" styled vocal grates and the piece doesn't particularly hold my interest. Certainly it lacks the immediacy of "Down In It", and I'm generally inclined to want Reznor to look forward, not backward. The b-sides aren't much better-- the DFA mix of "The Hand That Feeds" is yet another remix, this one pretty much a full techno mix. It's quite different, replete with an odd panting sample that gets somewhat irritating as the piece never ends (it rambles on for well over seven minutes). The live version of "Love is Not Enough" is the only saving grace on the single-- while its not one of the better songs on the record, its decent enough, and live it got bigger. The arrangement is the same, but its more direct and in your face. For the casual listener, skip this one. The fan will be buying it regardless of what I say, but it's in line with the recent singles, not the older (and superior) ones.

Only: good song, terrible video,
This review is from: Only (Audio CD)
Now I'm a pretty damn big NIN fan, don't get me wrong, but Trents new video for the single "Only" is atrocious. What also perplexes me is that the video was directed by David Fincher who also directed one of my favorite movies, Fight Club. The video consists of Trents image being projected upon one of those toys that leaves imprints of whatever touches it in a sheet of metal pins. His image sits on a desk with a computer and other knick-knacks that shake as the music progresses. That's it! That's the whole freakin' video. I must say, I'm very disappointed in this video. When you think back to the days of the downward spiral and before and how all of NIN's videos used to be so controversial that they were all universally banned this video makes me lose a lot of respect for what Trent has become. I love the with teeth album and still love NIN, but Trents gotta loosen the vice grip the label has on his balls and reclaim artistic freedom over his work. I'm interested to see what other people thought of this video and look forward to hearing your replies, assuming anyone reads this.

Hey, you like Gary Numan? You know that dude who wrote that song "Cars" back in the early eighties in addition to many other classic synth-pop songs? Well, get one of his records(may I recomend "The Pleasure Principle" or "Replicas") over this pale imitator. Come on Reznor, you can do better than this.
