Not really a biography,

This review is from: Only a Novel: The Double Life of Jane Austen (Hardcover)
Instead of being a biography, this book is really an annotated list of Jane Austen's letters. While this prevents the author from a common sin of biographers, that of describing the era to the detriment of the subject, it also precludes her developing Austen more fully. Why Austen is regarded as the foremost female novelist in the English language, for example, is not addressed. The author also does not prove her thesis that Austen lived a double life. The author has an irritating habit of not giving years, particularly for important events such as Austen's death. C or C minus. |
