The Eternal Burner,

This review is from: If Only for One Night (Audio CD)
Having been a Charles Earland fan since the first release of "Black Talk" in my teens & his collaborations with Lou Donaldson in the 60's, I had some questions when I noted the pairing of Najee initially, but "If Only for 1 Night" turned out to be anything but a smooth jazz set. Like pretty much all of the previous Earland releases, the music burns white hot from beginning to end with brother Najee seamlessly fitting into the groove on each piece. The sad part about this is that this was Earland's last recording before his untimely passing; I would have loved to see what other monster CD's would have come of this collaboration. No complaints!

Najee Swings? You Bet!!,

When I first heard about this album, I thought it was some type of mistake. Najee, Sleepy-time king,I mean... Smooth-jazz king with The Burner?! No way!! Well, I was wrong. Najee smokes in the traditional jazz setting, holding his own and even manages to hang with Earland. When I heard him quote Wayne Shorter's 'Footprints' on 'My Favorite Things', I almost fell out of my chair. Earland puts together a fine set that holds up well with his previous albums. Buy this!! You'll definitely enjoy it. Rest in Peace, Burner.
