3.0 out of 5 stars A nice one-shot, but didn't mesh well... (somewhat of a spoiler), January 4, 2010
This review is from: Only One Wish (Paperback)
When I first picked this book up, I noticed that it was written by the manga artist who did 'Tokyo Mew Mew'. Yet the volume's description sounded very similar to 'Hell Girl', which made me wonder what exactly the manga would end up being like. The two images just didn't mesh well & that's pretty much what I ended up with here.

The idea behind the manga is simple- you have to make a call to a certain number in a certain place, which will connect you with a girl who will answer just one wish for you. You could wish for anything- love, revenge or friendship. There's four stories in this volume, with one story following a girl who wishes her story about her crush would come true & that he'd shrink so she could take care of him.

Bluntly put, this book didn't mesh well. The first story in the book was somewhat dark in tone, which was what I was expecting. The book promises "wishes don't turn out like you want them to" in an ominous tone, so that's what I was thinking this would end up being. Nope- this first story was the only one to fulfill this promise. The following stories are all very lighthearted, with the final story being the most lighthearted of them all.

Honestly, this didn't really mesh well. It's not that this is a terrible collection or that the stories are unreadable, but it just didn't go together. Not only that, but the characters were a little shallow. In one of the stories (the shrinking boy one) the love interest was so incredibly unlikeable that I kept hoping that the main character would step on him by accident. Even more frustrating, there was a part of the story that made no sense. (SPOILER) The boy regains his original height, but we're given no explanation as to why. Did he make a call? Did he stretch himself out with a taffy puller? We don't know because we aren't given that information.

If you are a humongous fan of 'Tokyo Mew Mew', then you might like this. It has a bonus story at the end which was cute enough. It's just that the volume was so randomly thrown together that I really didn't get a good feel for the book. The book just didn't feel like it had as much effort put into it as the 'Tokyo Mew Mew' series did.

I recommend going to a bookstore to glance over this before you get it. It's ok, but it's really not anything I'd recommend buying unless you absolutely need a new manga to read & you've burned through everything else you wanted to get.

4.0 out of 5 stars One wish is never enough, December 29, 2009
This review is from: Only One Wish (Paperback)

The concept is simple, you have one wish that can come true. The modern twist added by Mia Ikumi is that you have to text your wish to a particular address, and wait.

The wish giver arrives, and grants the wish. It has often been said that you had better be careful what you wish for, it might come true. Volume One presents four wishes with different results. One happy, and three with different results. The choice of a boyfriend, and even having a boyfriend can change your social circle. Achieving love is often a wish, and in this case, it is. Want a manga situation, don't wish too hard.

I was surprised by this manga volume. It can be so much if Mia Ikumi explores it with intelligence. I like tha cover art, and imagine that this is a poster somewhere as well. This volume is highly recommended.
