Good read, Ms. Alliluyeva's personality shines,
By Chengiz (NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Only One Year (Hardcover)
Svetlana Alliluyeva is Stalin's daughter. In light of this, it is significant that she's a pretty normal person: she neither is an apologist nor apologizes for the terrible times her father and communism wrought, and throughout "Only One Year", I found myself admiring her objectiveness and independent character. This is not a great book or --unless you're really interested in everything USSR-- a must read, but it paints a good picture from a personal viewpoint of Soviet times and Indo-Soviet and US-Soviet relations. As you may know, the book is autobiographical and about Ms. Alliluyeva's defection to the West while on a trip to India, but there are many asides about Stalinist times. It is quite well-written and well-translated, and a good read.

This review is from: Only One Year (Hardcover)
It's the second book by Svetlana( Stalin's daughter)about her own life, about her Transition Year when she managed to get out and stay out of USSR! It takes a very strong person to make such decision and follow it through. Even if it means to leave her (young adult) children behind!
Svetlana had no illusions about her father dark side but she loved him dearly as a daughter. You could see her as a very educated, hard working and kind woman. I would like to meet Svetlana in person one day. Love that book. |
