5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, May 10, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Only Rock'N Roll: 1965-1969 (Series) (Audio CD)
This is one great C.D.! Listening to it is like listening to the best oldies station in the world. It has some great, famous songs: Dock Of The Bay, Happy Together, California Dreamin', Respect, Devil With A blue Dress On, and The Letter. But it also has some unjustly neglected songs, such as Summer In The City, And When I Die, Elis' Coming, and Magic Carpet Ride. By all means, buy this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Original Hits, June 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Only Rock'N Roll: 1965-1969 (Series) (Audio CD)
No re-recorded versions! A nice assortment of pop, rock and soul blockbusters from 1965 - 69. An added bonus is the inclusion of the complete 4:27 version of Steppenwolf's freak-out, "Magic Carpet Ride." No edited versions.

This review is from: Only Rock'N Roll: 1965-1969 (Series) (Audio CD)
Only Rock'N Roll: 1965-1969 is another fine installment in a great CD series of Rock and Roll Hits that made the airwaves sizzle! The quality of the sound is excellent; and the artwork is about par for this CD which means it's very good as well. This is anything but elevator music!

Tommy James & The Shondells start things off loud and strong with their major hit entitled "Mony, Mony." This tune has a great beat; they sing and harmonize this to perfection--and beyond! I really like :Mony Mony" and it's a solid start for this album. There's also a great hit from The Turtles, "Happy Together." "Happy Together" is a beautiful love song with a fine chorus and the key changes between major and minor easily make "Happy Together" a major highlight of this CD. It's a very pretty melody and that's terrific. Listen also for The Byrds
to do their awesome "Mister Tambourine Man." "Mister Tambourine Man" is classic `60s rock and it remains an easily recognizable tune even today all these years later.

"I Got You Babe" features Sonny and Cher at their very best; "I Got You Babe" is one of their best hits ever and it still charms me to hear and enjoy this song. The percussion is used to great advantage and it makes this tune very sweet. "Windy" by The Association really sounds great with just a touch of that psychedelic rock flavor that really makes me smile; and there's the fantastic "California Dreamin'" from The Mamas and The Papas. "California Dreamin'" inspired many a young person in the 1960s to travel west to California in search of a better quality of life and inner peace. Great!

"Respect" by Aretha Franklin is another major highlight of this album; and wow, does Aretha ever bat this one straight out of the ballpark! There's also a fine medley of "Devil With A Blue Dress On/Good Golly Miss Molly" by Mitch Ryder And The Detroit Wheels; fans of the show Murphy Brown may well recognize this medley as some of the background music used by the producers of that show.

"(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" is a humble masterpiece by Otis Redding; how I wish he were still with us Otis could take just about anything and make it beautiful with his special touch; and I miss him. "Summer In The City" by The Lovin' Spoonful is another great, classic rock tune from the late 1960s. In addition, listen for "It's Your Thing" by The Isley Brothers--ooh, how they sound good!

"In The Midnight Hour" by Wilson Pickett was a huge hit back in the day; and the CD ends strong with The Shadows Of Knight performing their huge hit, "Gloria." They sound as fresh as the day I first heard them!

Overall, this CD gives us a lot of the best music from the latter half of the 1960s; and I recommend this CD for fans of this genre of rock music. Enjoy!
