Editorial Reviews

Although he is originally from Great Britain, he has spent most of his life in the northeastern part of the United States. Born in London on February 23, 1975, Escoffery was only 11 when he left the U.K. with his mother and moved to New Haven, CT in 1986. That year, he joined the New Haven Trinity Boys Choir, and it was also in 1986 that he began studying the tenor sax with saxophonist/clarinetist Malcolm Dickinson. Escoffery was still in his teens when he met the famous alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, who Escoffery has described as a mentor and a major inspiration in his life; Escoffery studied with McLean extensively at the Hartt School, a performing arts school in West Hartford. After that, he attended the New England Conservatory in Boston and graduated from that institution with a Masters in 1999 before moving to New York City the following year at the age of 25.

I first heard Wayne Escoffery with Tom Harrell at a jazz festival a few years back in Ottawa. It was an electrifying concert and I remember being very impressed with Escoffery and his talent. This CD is a very personal concept piece. He tells, through music, his coming to terms with an abusive father. It is dark and frenzied in parts, and then moves to a place of strength and forgiveness. I knew he had the playing chops, but this cd proves he is a talented composer as well. This is a personal, sometimes raw, complex and fascinating piece of work that rewards you with repeated listens. Highly recommended.

If you are not familiar with Escoffery's work, prepare to be dazzled. His work both purrs and roars - great tone alongside great compositions. After reading his bio, I learned he had studied with the great Jackie McLean - but he is certainly not just a stylistic copycat of McLean's. He possesses his own sound, and it is terrific! Check out his live work with some on-line video concert footage. Jazz fans and sax players alike will appreciate this monster talent!
