Book Description

March 15, 1999
A compelling work by author Jorge Luis Seco!

Jorge Luis Seco tells a moving tale of desires forced beneath the surface because of family, religion and inner fear. His moving coming out story of Jose Lopez, a young up and coming attorney, takes the reader through a world perhaps all too familiar to many gay people, but one that captivates the reader through fascinating characters and superb story telling.

Readers will have much to reflect upon as they recognized parts of themselves in Seco's beautifully constructed characters and riveting story of hidden spirits, truths revealed and love replacing doubt and fear.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

A compelling work by author Jorge Luis Seco! Jorge Luis Seco, a Cuban born author who now lives in New Jersey, tells a moving tale of desire's forced beneath the surface because of family, religion and inner fear. His moving coming out story of Jose Lopez, a young up and coming attorney, takes the reader through a world perhaps all too familiar to many gay people, but one that captivates the reader through fascinating characters and superb story telling. Seco studied at the University of Havana, Cuba before being granted permission to leave the country as an accused homosexual. Finally able to leave Cuba, he lived in Spain before relocating to the United States. His story of Jose Lopez in many ways tells his own story though he sets his novel in fiction. Forced to live with a dominating woman believed to be his mother, Jose is blessed to have a sympathetic sister in Margot, who is able to see the Jose beneath the surface. When Jose is asked to take on the case o! f a young man, Tom, falsely accused of drug trafficing, it is Margot who at once sees the love and affection Jose feels for Tom, even before he can recognize it for himself. When through his close friends Bob and Rene, Jose begins to socialize within the gay world, he is amazed to see many of his long held and religious based perceptions shattered. As he slowly realizes that two men can share meaningful, loving relationships, it is Margot who helps lead him through the journey with sisterly love and concern.

It's not everyday that one comes across a well written coming-out story that is able to properly captivate the spirit and essence of Hispanics and the unique and multiple conflicts they face dealing with strong cultural traditions and their evolving sexuality in American society. This multifaceted story serves to provide an insider's look to those that are not Hispanic and to lend courage and understanding to those that are Hispanic as they undergo their own difficult denouement.

I highly recommend The Only Sun I Need. Jorge Luis Seco has written a beautiful book with a timely message. Through the eyes of Jose, the main character, the reader examines universal issues like friendship, family conflict, cultural expectations, spirituality, sexuality and love. Coming to terms with his sexual orientation forces Jose to look closely at the other relationships in his life. As we follow Jose on his journey to self fullfillment, we witness the power of unconditional love.
