Product Description
Andrew Bower is an American soldier fighting in Germany at the end of World War II. His earlier life was marred by abusive parents. He has vowed to be a better man and better parent than his own father.
Andrew enters a death camp after its liberation. The Nazis have experimented on a Jew by burying him to his neck in concrete. The man's wife, Annelisa, is by his side. Andrew kills the doomed man. During a later battle, Andrew is mortally wounded. He is evacuated by airplane, but the plane is attacked and forced to land. Fleeing Nazis, Andrew escapes to the tiny nation of Ilysia, which has been untouched by the war. He stumbles to the manor house where Annelisa lives with her father-in-law, a duke who is the nation's leader. Caring for Andrew, Annelisa vows that she will not fail him as she failed her husband. But Andrew is moved to the town hospital, where he meets nurse Bernice Denning and her husband, Brenden. Andrew quickly revives, and the Dennings take him into their home. Since Bernice and Brenden are seldom at home, Andrew becomes the surrogate parent to the four children, including beautiful Filomena (18).
Andrew enters a series of poignant, imperfect adventures wherein family love and creative effort replace warfare. Ostensibly realistic, these metaphysical escapades are alternately hilarious and horrific, yet always lead away from anguish. His selflessness in this visionary realm leads him to understand that in the universe of humans, no light penetrates life more perfectly than peace.
