5.0 out of 5 stars Thor - underrated heavy metal legends August 2, 2012
By Jake K.
Format:Audio CD
This may not be the hit that was "Keep the Dogs Away" in 1977, but it is on a whole other level than "Unchained" (1983), which was the album before this one. Although this album has its share of cheese, it is at most delicious and enjoyable; not too sharp, but not too mild either. Full of rockin', battle ready hooks and identifiable (yet overly campy) themes, the premise of the title "Only the Strong" not only entails one's physical strength, but that of self-determination and courage as well. This album is recommended for fans of Saxon, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Grim Reaper. You have experienced the greatness of Anvil. Now, it might as well be the time to give the daddies of Canadian hard rock, Thor, a well-deserved go!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cult album for manly metal warriors! July 30, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Originally released in 1985, Only the Strong was the second full-length album from Canadian muscle-man turned cult heavy metal icon Thor, who made a name for himself as much for his on-stage feats of strength (bending iron bars and such) as for the band's Manowar-style metal.

Stage antics aside, Thor did manage to serve up some pretty solid traditional heavy metal. There are no real surprises here, just fast-paced, Maiden and Priest-inspired anthems about rocking, fighting and staying strong (presumably for metal). It's nothing terribly original, but this kind of early North American heavy metal has a lot of DIY charm and NWOBHM-inspired raw energy that's hard to resist. Closest comparisons are probably bands like Gotham City and Culprit, but yeah, it's impossible not to think of Manowar when you spin this one.

Obviously an album like Only the Strong isn't going to appeal to everyone, but if you collect cult `80s heavy metal and don't mind a little manly metal cheese, you really need to have at least one Thor album in your collection.

Edition Notes: Only the Strong has seen a couple of reissues in recent years. The one I have is on a Greek label and includes a pair of live bonus tracks. It sounds like it's been remastered, at least to some extent.

This review is for the Cleopatra/Deadline 2014 print.

About the rating; 1 star for the actual music, which is more like a 3 itself. Unremarkable '80s trad metal, which at times sounds already dated by its year of release (the same year that would see To Mega Therion, Killing is My Business..., Hell Awaits and Seven Churches released, and a year after trailblazing efforts like Don't Break the Oath and Bathory's debut). Not bad, just nothing special. The other star is for the packaging, which is professionally done, and includes plenty of pictures and liner notes.

(I haven't gotten to the DVD yet)

My issue is mostly with the sound quality. I don't have any point of reference to judge what this is actually supposed to sound like, having this as my first real exposure to the album, but I swear it sounds like they used a badly worn vinyl copy as a source, and used a cheap USB turntable to rip the songs. Things go steadily downhill from the beginning, and hit rock bottom at tracks 5&6, picking back up at track 7, before going back downhill until the end. It sounds exactly like a used record that's been played to death on some cheap plastic turntable until the inner groove is so damaged that it renders the last songs on either side into a trebly mess of static. The bonus tracks culled from the Rock 'n Roll Nightmare soundtrack are slightly better sonically, but still marred by pops, as if sourced by scratched or dirty vinyl.

The demos sounds like demos.

Also, my CD was badly scratched towards the outer edge, as a result of poor handling during the manufacturing process, as the disc was not loose.

(Note: I did not get my copy through Amazon)
