I bought this book to teach our newly-adopted adult dog, Toby, how to behave. I was disappointed as it seems that this book (along with the majority of others) focuses mostly on how to teach puppies, not adult dogs.
I think it would have been very effective had I been the intended reader.

If you are mainly interested in teaching you dog basic commands (sit, come, stay, etc.), or in correcting moderate behavioral problems, all in a humane, non-violent way, then this book will live up to its title.

The first third of the book mainly deals with theory, such as the benefits of positive reinforcement and canine motivation. It also introduces the clicker, which is a small plastic box with folded metal inside that makes a clicking sound when depressed.

The clicker is used to mark the desirable behavior of the animal and is followed by a reward. Purchasing a clicker will be a necessity if you plan to use this book. They can be bought for less than five dollars at most larger pet stores, such as PetCo or Petsmart, and can be bought on amazon for cheaper.

The book then covers housebreaking and how to train your dog to follow basic commands.

Finally, almost the last half of the book deals with behavioral problems, from excessive barking and leash pulling, to mouthing and nipping.

Overall, this is a very good introductory book and will probably suffice for anyone simply looking to train a more companionable family pet, and it does so with the scientifically proven, humane method of positive reinforcement.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Dog Training Books, November 29, 2005
This review is from: The Only Dog Training Book You Will Ever Need: From Avoiding Accidents to Banishing Barking, the Basics for Raising a Well-Behaved Dog (Paperback)
I highly recommend Gerilyn J. Bielakiewicz's "The Only Dog Training Book You Will Ever Need" which gives you the A-Z of raising those cute but oftentimes unruly pups. The book is written for novices in mind and had been a major life-saver when I was at a complete loss as to what to do when I adopted a 3-month old Pembroke Welsh Corgi (a notoriously difficult breed to raise) a couple of months ago. The book delves into the highly effective method of clicker training for dogs at length, resulting in my teaching my pup over 10 commands in just days (!). Betsy Brevitz's "Hound Health Handbook" is also another excellent reference book which offers credible advise from a writer-turned-vet behind the award-winning website, .... These books are must-read for owners who are experiencing problems in obedience training and/or understanding their dogs. Prospective owners who are contemplating what breed to buy and the pros and cons of adopting a dog to complete their lives and homes will also find them useful. "Puppies for Dummies" is another book written with the novice in mind: it offers practical clues like playing classical CDs on repeater mode while owners have to leave their dogs alone; to not make a song and dance when owners have to depart for work or retire to bed(no-no to "grandiose departures/returns gestures"); to what to look out in dog food labelling et al. 5 Stars for their comprehensive contents, readability and effectiveness!

1.0 out of 5 stars SAVE YOUR MONEY-, January 30, 2010

This review is from: The Only Dog Training Book You Will Ever Need: From Avoiding Accidents to Banishing Barking, the Basics for Raising a Well-Behaved Dog (Paperback)
I got this book yesterday. And what a waste of my money.
Tells you to take your dog to a training class!!! WHAT??
This was supposed to be a training book
This is way I had never bought books on the internet before.
I received this book in great time.
However I chose this book due to the reviews and that
It seemed to be speaking to me about my dogs behavior.
And that I do not believe in aggressive behavior towards any animal.
This book describes in great detail what I already know; that my dog is
Out of control, and chews and destroys everything. That "Marley and Me"
Gives a more than accurate viewing of what it is like to own the
well known "world's best dog" a LAB.... as sweet and funny and charming as he is,
he is a Nightmare to handle or train.. I have trained dogs before, I had a great training book
once, but unfortunately was loaned out to never return.. I have never had a dod like this one,
And never owned the `great" lab before. Always heard that they were the best dogs,
This book merely states all the things my dog does. Not how to correct or to train, just
To get your dog into a training class, and to feed different treats,,
My dog already sits, stays, and lies down, then he will eat my whole house.
They do tell you, your dogs behavior is your fault in not giving your dog enough attention,,
and exercise. PLEASE- this dog gets all the attention, is never left alone, and is always running .
Very disappointed in this book, it was a waste of my limited money. It was shipped to me free
But I will have to pay more than I paid for the book to ship back,
So I have a new thing for my dog to eat

The book was quite helpful with thorough explanations and insights into the developmental stages of the dog. In addition, the book provided reasons why people and pets act/react to situations. Bravo!

This review is from: The Only Dog Training Book You Will Ever Need: From Avoiding Accidents to Banishing Barking, the Basics for Raising a Well-Behaved Dog (Paperback)
I was disappointed in this book. The book was mainly about clicker training which is not a method I use in training my dogs. Some of the information in the book was useful but there are other dog training books that I like better.

The title isn't exactly true, but it did help me alot when I adopted my dog. He is the first dog I've ever owned and I was really nervous. This book answers alot of questions but I don't agree with everything.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great head start, September 20, 2009

This review is from: The Only Dog Training Book You Will Ever Need: From Avoiding Accidents to Banishing Barking, the Basics for Raising a Well-Behaved Dog (Paperback)
This terrific book gave my dog and I a great head start in our life together. My Cody was a wild 11-month old rescue dog living in a pack of other dogs at a foster home. He had no good manners, little regard for rules, and knew no obedience commands. I bought this book in preparation for adopting a rescue dog and it was the best investment to prepare me to be a pet owner. It helped me to set my expectations, understand the importance of training, and how to go about achieving my goal of having a well-behaved pet. I followed many of hte suggestions, and also attended obedience school. Today, three years later, Cody is a happy, friendly, well-behaved therapy dog who brings joy to many.
