A nice mix of pop and country,
By A Customer
This review is from: I Only Wanted You (Audio CD)
Marie never seemed like a "genuine" country artist, but instead she offered pleasing pop music with definite Nashville overtones. The title song of this album doesn't even sound remotely country, with its synthesized drum beats and punchy rhythms, yet it's still a great song with a wonderful, energetic vocal. Other strong songs on here include the unusual "Cry Just A Little," which almost has an R&B feel, and "You're Still to New to Me," a duet with Paul Davis that reached No. 1 on the charts. Other songs on here are kind of fluffy and less substantial, but still appealing.

Nice and melodious,
This review is from: I Only Wanted You (Audio CD)
I Only Wanted You is a pleasing and melodic album from Marie Osmond. Her singing is very attractive and smooth. This disc is in a country pop musical direction. A total of ten tracks is included--I find every one of them to be listenable and worthwhile. The musicianship is tight, the songwriting is fulfilling, and the production is taut and polished. Three of the ten songs are pretty ballads--"Cry Just a Little," "I Know the Feeling," and "More Than Dancing." Also, one of the tracks ("You're Still New to Me") features a duet between Osmond and Paul Davis. The opening song, the ballad "Cry Just a Little," is my favorite tune of the album--it's an engaging one that displays impressive vocals from Osmond and a charming chorus. "Everybody's Crazy 'Bout My Baby" is an upbeat cut with a cool dose of saxophone playing, too. I enjoy the choruses throughout this disc. The CD insert doesn't include the song lyrics. The album is just over 33 minutes in length, also. I Only Wanted You is good and tuneful.

WOW Her Best Effort,

This CD blew me away. I have her others, while they were good, this is fantastic. It is definately not pure country. It is country pop. Most songs are upbeat. You could bob along for miles to these tunes. The best of the lot "Your Love Carries Me Away." If you even remotely like the songs that you can sample on this CD from this site you will LOVE the rest of the CD

Marie Osmond made a series of pop-country albums in the eighties and achieved a measure of success in the country charts. I discarded any pre-conceptions I may have had about Marie's music as a result of her first pop-country album (There's no stopping your heart), which was a classic album. There was no way that this follow-up was ever going to match the brilliance of its predecessor but it is nevertheless an excellent album containing many wonderful songs.
No doubt inspired by the success of Meet me in Montana (a duet with Dan Seals from her previous album), Marie included another duet here, You're still new to me. Marie's singing partner here is Paul Davis, who had a few country hits of his own and also featured on Tanya Tucker's I won't take less than your love. It is a brilliant song but Meet me in Montana is one of those special songs the like of which comes along but rarely. Of the solo offerings, the opening Cry just a little, the title track and the closing Everybody's crazy about my baby are both outstanding. But there are plenty of great songs in between. If you enjoy Marie's pop-country music of the eighties, you will surely approve of this album even if it doesn't quite match its predecessor.

Marie Osmond was an absolute country star. I thought that her songs very outstanding. This recording (also There's No Stopping Your Heart) was fantastic. I have been a fan of Marie for years, and this CD is perfect for Marie enthusiasts. Her country CDs were not "twangy" country. This was a little pop+country=great record.

NEVER GETS OLD,
By Jake Adler "Jake" (New York City) - See all my reviews

This album should be required listening for everybody who like pop influenced country music in the 80's. The title song rocks and New Love is a bouncy, happy sounding song. So what if it is corny to love Marie Osmond. She made some of the best country music of the day back then. Heres hoping for more!

Her second Capitol release from the 80's,

In 1986, Marie followed her Capitol debut success with I Only Wanted You LP & CD. The first single was released just prior to it's issue went to #1 You're Still New To Me duet with Paul Davis. She had two other top country hits that followed the title song and Everybody's Crazy Bout My Baby. The 4th single Cry Just A Little did not faire as well. Perhaps the real gem here is New Love!? It is one of my favorite songs from this CD and the answer to Juice Newton's Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me. Other highlights include We're Gonna Need A Love Song with it's Carribean/Country type combo.

No matter if she was singing with her brother Donny or with Paul Davis, Marie Osmond just can not be beat. Like it says on the cover I only wanted you as well on cd instead of alumb.
