Product Description

Review

In the 1970s, Latimore (aka Benny Latimore) stirred up attention as a respectable contemporary soul singer who had firm control over down-home blues feeling. Finding his niche at Malaco in the last decade, this progenitor of Robert Cray imparts a smooth conviction to high-quality happy or sad love songs on a typical set. The topnotch accompaniment by the Muscle Shoals players, including stalwarts Roger Hawkins and David Hood, accentuates his husky sexiness. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993 -- From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful By Sam Mosley on August 11, 2006
Format: Audio CD
Fairly standard Latimore LP for Malaco, sticking to his distinctive style of down home Southern soul. Soul veteran Jimmy Lewis produced several of the tracks, aiming for a slightly more contemporary sound using programmed backing, while Malaco man Wolf Stevenson produced the others using the usual Muscle Shoals accompaniment for the more old school sound. The songs are pretty standard Latimore style, though he does get very bluesy on "If I Wasn't A Gentleman", while "Can't Stop" has a nice reggae tinge. The best track is probably "Take Me to the Mountaintop", a simple yet affective mid-tempo track and the only track written by Benny himself. One wishes Malaco would've let him contribute more originals in the simple soul/blues style of his classic "Let's Straighten It Out".

If this CD broke no new ground for Latimore, it at least shows that his producers at Malaco knew what material suited him best. This is DEEP, heartfelt Southern Soul-Blues from an artist who has always enjoyed a very loyal cult following among Southern Soul fans and devotees.
