4.0 out of 5 stars Great for dancing with the one you love., August 20, 1999

This review is from: Only What I Feel (Audio CD)
"Mr. Man in the Moon" has to be the all-time best song to dance to. Stirring and romantic at the same time. It's one of those rare songs that are great for two-stepping or three-stepping.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love This CD, July 16, 2006

I just love this CD. One of Patty's best she has ever done. Her vocal ability is just outstanding. What a range of vocal ability. You Will is a wonderful single from the Cd as well as How Can I Help You Say Goodbye. This song is about losing loved ones and best friends. The first time I heard it I was just astonished at the words in the song. It makes you feel like you are there and these things are happening to you. Another good song on the CD that was Number One is Blame It On Your Heart. I Love This Song and the first time I heard it I knew it was going to be number one. It is about a man who has left his wife for another woman and now tries to mend things up with her and she more or less tells him to get lost. Evidentally he doesn't know how lucky he has it. There is a lot of good music on this CD and one of my favorite songs is Mr. Man In The Moon. I like it because I like the older country music and it sounds like a song from the Late 50's to early 60's.
What a good selection of music all on one CD. I recommend this CD to anyone who loves country music and that is why I gave it 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Patty, April 22, 2003
This review is from: Only What I Feel (Audio CD)
Patty Loveless left MCA Records after five albums, feeling that she was getting lost in the shuffle known as Reba McEntire, Wynonna, and Trisha Yearwood. 1993's Only What I Feel - her sixth album and Epic label debut - was her most traditional sounding to date. This is appropriate, as Loveless is the most traditional of all recent female country vocalists, sort of a modern day Loretta Lynn. Unlike Lynn, Loveless doesn't write most of her own songs. But she relates to her material well enough that she more than makes it her own.

Feisty upbeat numbers had given Loveless her biggest hits at MCA ("Timber I'm Falling In Love," "I'm That Kind Of Girl," etc.) and the leadoff single "Blame It On Your Heart" is just as catchy, with "All I Need (Is Not To Need You)" and "You Will" also getting the adrenaline flowing. The slower numbers, however, are ultimately the most memorable. The reflective "What's A Broken Heart" packs a wallop of emotion, while the achingly hushed "How Can I Help You To Say Goodbye" can be related to by anyone who has ever lost someone dear to them. The latter elevated Loveless to the top of the female country pack where she remained for a few more Epic albums.

There are a couple of bland numbers found here ("Love Builds Bridges," "Mr. Man In the Moon") but most of the album is extremely well done. On a side note, a ruptured blood vessel on her vocal chords occurred during the initial recording of this album, which led to its re-recording following successful laser surgery.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Only"As Good As It Gets, June 17, 2001

Though Patty Loveless had scored numerous hits, her switch to a new label and this album was the catalyst for things to come, not only critically(which was never a problem), but commercially as well. Opening with the rocking 'You Will', Loveless journeys through a typically flawless song cycle, easily balancing uptempo ('Blame It On Your Heart') with balladry('Nothin But The Wheel')as well as old school country('Love Builds The Bridges'). It's an act few can do with this much ease, but Loveless has always been several rungs up on the Nashville ladder creatively. The album also houses possibly her greatest artistic achievement, the stunningly carthartic ballad 'How Can I Help You Say Goodbye' which justly became a career milestone for her. One of the great country albums of the '90's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid comeback from throat surgery, January 31, 2002
This review is from: Only What I Feel (Audio CD)
Having established herself at MCA, Loveless moved to Epic for this 1993 release following restorative throat surgery. The surgery and the label switch were both successes -- Loveless continued to have hits (including this album's "Blame it on Your Heart"), and, more importantly, her pairing with producer/husband Emory Gordy, Jr. would result in a string of artistically triumphant albums.

For her Epic debut, Loveless pulls together traditional country fiddle-and-steel ballads, upbeat country-pop, and piano-laden weepers. As on her subsequent Epic albums, her song picking is exemplary. Though she and Gordy would take another couple of albums to really nail an original musical sound (1996's "Trouble With the Truth" and 1997's "Long Stretch of Lonesome" are filled with original arrangements and production touches not found here), their combined musicality is strong enough to keep this from ever turning into Nashville product.

Highlights include the spunky lead-off, "You Will," the moving ballad, "Nothing But the Wheel," the nostalgic, blue "Mr. Man in the Moon," and the tongue-tripping "Blame it on Your Heart." "How Can I Help You Say Goodbye" is one in a string of songs closing Loveless' Epic LPs that contemplate final departure and afterlife (e.g., "Over My Shoulder" "Someday I Will Lead the Parade" "Where I'm Bound" "Pieces on the Ground").

As a Patty Loveless album, this is a good effort, with a few stellar tracks, but not up to the level she and Gordy would obtain a couple of years later on. For just about any other singer of her generation, an album of this quality would be an unqualified home run. Worth having as part of your Loveless' collection, but not the place to start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic debut on Epic label, April 4, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Only What I Feel (Audio CD)
Patty steadily built her career during her time on MCA but that label was not short of talent - Reba McEntire and Trisha Yearwood were among those who were also signed to MCA at the time. With less competition at Epic records, Patty made the switch. This particular album, whose recording and subsequent release was delayed by throat surgery, showed Patty's traditional roots within a contemporary country framework.

The album is dominated by ballads but there are some up-tempo and mid-tempo songs (Blame it on your heart, How about you, All I need is not to need you, You will). It yielded three big country hits, these being Nothing but the wheel (about going on the road to drive a man out of her mind), How can I help you say goodbye (about coping with death) and Blame it on your heart (one of the up-tempo songs). All three later appeared on Classics, a greatest hits compilation that I've already reviewed.

Apart from the hits, there are other excellent songs here including Love builds the bridges pride builds the walls (about two stubborn people), You don't know how lucky you are (on the old theme of love being more important than riches) and What's a broken heart (on another old theme - coming to terms with a broken relationship).

As ever, this is a top quality album - Patty has never recorded anything else - but if you are new to her music, you might be better to buy Classics as a starter.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHEN IT COMES TO COUNTRY NOONE BEATS PATTY!!, September 29, 2005

I get so sick of hearing about Reba McEntire, Faith Hill and Martina McBride. They aren't fit to hold Patty's microphone and this CD proves it!! Every song on here is an absolute gem and this was the beginning of a long and prosperous association with Sony. MCA didn't know what they were doing when they had Patty on the label and she released outstanding work there too! Patty has always been excellent and consistent. This CD will disappoint no one and is one I listen to over and over again. My favorite is "How Can I Help You Say Goodbye" followed by "Nothing But the Wheel" and Blame it On Your Heart" all big hits for Patty. She is the best because when it comes to country music (and I'm talking real country...not bubblegum like Reba, Faith or Martina) no one does it like this gal!!
