While director Norman Jewison's Moonstruck is a romantic cornerstone, this 1994 film is often overlooked. It's a sweet valentine about a young woman, aptly named Faith (Marisa Tomei, never cuter), who chases an unknown man to Europe because the name "Damon Bradley" was once spelled on an Ouija board as her true love. With her sister-in-law (Bonnie Hunt, whose own marriage seems to be falling apart), she travels the streets of Rome looking for Damon Bradley.

And lo and behold, she literally runs into a man claiming to be Damon. Is this meant to be? Faith certainly thinks so. Robert Downey Jr. (also never cuter) plays Damon in a role that showcases his charms. He shows his quick wit in handing Faith's advances and his absolute devotion to her when the winds change. Despite the cuteness factor, this is a movie to fall in love with. Jewison and Sven Nykvist (Ingmar Bergman's cameraman) present a sun-kissed Italy so beautiful, you might be tempted to hop a plane immediately after viewing the movie. --Doug Thomas

Product Description

When Faith was 11, she asked her Ouija board to spell out the name of the man for her. The answer--Damon Bradley--was someone she had never heard of. But days before her marriage, Faith receives a call from her fiance's old school friend... Damon Bradley! And on this slim lead she flies to Italy to track him down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only You, March 14, 2008

Who could not love a romantic comedy that takes place in Italy? Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr have very obvious chemistry, and are well matched in this movie. The multiple locations in Italy were breathtaking, and an excellent backdrop.

One of the best things about this movie was the beautiful setting. It was filmed in Venice, and there were some seriously magnificent shots. It made me wish I could just pick up and go there for a weekend, like Faith and Kate did.

The movie begins with Faith as a girl, playing with a Ouiji board. She asks who her soulmate is, and it gives her the name Damon Bradley. All her life, she waits to find him, but is unsuccessful. Marisa Tomei does an excellent job portraying the naive dreamer, Faith. When a phone call turns out to be a lead on discovering her soulmate, Faith and Kate fly to Venice, hoping to find him...ten days before Faith is supposed to marry the wrong man. In Venice, Faith runs into Peter Wright *literally* who chases her down to return her shoe. The moment she bumps into him, he falls in love with her! Seeing it as his only opportunity to get to know her, Peter (played by Robert Downey Jr.) pretends to be Damon.

I won't spoil the ending, but I will say this movie really made me smile. It's a great chick flick for those of us who love romance movies.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a scenery!, December 6, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Only You (DVD)
OK, the script may be somewhat cheesy - it is lighthearted, but the actors are utterly delightful and humorous, and the scenery is breathtaking.

Marisa Tomei plays Faith, a young woman whose brother played a prank upon her when they were teenagers and paid a fortune-teller to tell her that she would get married to the main by the name of Damon Bradley. This worked like a hypnotic suggestion - it stuck in her mind. She was just about to get married to someone, and while she is fixing her wedding gown, when the phone rings and a friend of her husband to be presents himself as Damon Bradley. This triggers the words of the fortuneteller and off the chase begins to at least find out who this man is before she commits an error of getting married to the wrong guy.

She only manages to find out that Damon Bradley is at the airport en route to Italy. There is no time to be wasted and without packing anything, dressed in her wedding gown, off she goes lest she'd miss the man of her life. Bonnie Hunt is absolutely priceless in her supporting role - as a best friend, she, too, drops everything and decided to accompany her smitten friend on a wild chase through Italy. That wasn't such a hard decision to make since her own marriage was on the rocks.

While the actors are wonderful in their roles, it is this wild chase through Italy and the scenery that gives the movie special charm and appeal. Some places are simply more conducive to romance than others - they feed your heart and soul with beauty, love, inspiration and romance.

It's here in Italy that Robert Downey, Jr. stumbles upon Marisa Tomei and then he begins designing events to convince her that he is the right guy, originally even misrepresenting himself as Damon Bradley, and eventually incorporating a little bit of help from his friend, played by Billy Zane. As each of his schemes are uncovered, Marisa feels more and more disappointed and frustrated that he is trying to trick her, but at the same time she ends up developing greater and greater affection for him and realizing that he is actually a sweet and charming guy drops the fortune-telling prediction and decides to follow her heart.
