Book Description

Harkening back to the writing styles and small town settings of earlier American authors – John Steinbeck, Harper Lee, and Carson McCullers - "Only the Truth" is a psychological mystery with as many twists as the country road leading to the humble home of Billy Ray Hutchins, a lonely uneducated man living in the hills of Arkansas. Life changes little for him from day to day until he brings home a young drifter he meets at the railroad tracks, the mysterious Charlene, whose last name he never asks. He becomes her Sweet Billy Ray and his love for Charlene is steady and uncomplicated until the sheriff shows up to take her away in handcuffs. With the only woman he has ever loved behind bars for the coldblooded murder of the old man across the road, a confused and devastated Billy Ray sets out on a quest to find the truth, only the truth, whether it leads him to be able to save his Charlene from a death sentence or it frees him from her spell.

PRAISE for ONLY THE TRUTH!

Brown does a masterful job engaging the reader while weaving the psychological tapestry of love, loss, brutality and shame that challenges us to think. – Blink on Crime

Intriguing, disturbing, beautiful – Chelsea Hoffman

This well-written novella has it all: interest, suspense, great characters, and a surprising conclusion. - Fifty is the New Forty

Billy Ray Hutchins, Police Chief Williams, Mrs. Covey – positive African-American characters– in a heartwarming book that has nothing to do with race. – Books of Worth

Only the Truth is such a special treat and ‘Sweet Billy Ray’ is so endearing, an innocent heart, venturing down life’s rocky road. I already miss him and it’s like missing a good ole’ friend. – Kathleen McLaughlin, Business End of the Pen

Criminal Profiler Pat Brown takes the reader on a psychological ride as the main character Billy Ray Hutchins wrestles with the fact that he lived with and loved a murderer. Billy Ray is best described as a country bumpkin, his world is turned upside down, and he is forced to go into the mind of a killer. Only the Truth is a real page turner that is sure to keep readers interested from start to finish! - Levi Page, The Levi Page Show

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it, love it, love it! March 29, 2012

My husband and I both really enjoyed this novel. A small-town setting, endearing characters, and the pages practically turn themselves from the first page to the end. It should make everyone's summer vacation list. I agree with all who said it is hard to put down. This is not a gory, disturbing crime novel. Hard to believe, but much about it is sweet, funny, and heart-warming. About half-way through, just when you think you've got everything figured out, Pat Brown rolls out the surprises! I hope they make this one into a movie. And I personally would love a sequel.

3.0 out of 5 stars Substantial formatting issues May 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
One third of the way into this book on my Kindle--just as I was hooked--the text became center justified for the remainder of the book (as opposed to justified on the left-hand margin). I simply could not read like this. It was impossible to tell where paragraphs were starting. Terribly disappointed. Not to mention a number of obvious typos (which isn't too uncommon with the cheaper Kindle books).

If this issue is fixed, then I can't wait to finish the book and I will update this review.

***UPDATE***

I am happy to report that the formatting issues are fixed (though not the many typos). Unfortunately, I don't have a glowing review for this book. Three stars is pushing it. I'd say I was leaning four stars in the first third of the book (it seemed to have a lot of promise), then was feeling three stars through the middle, and was a solid two by the end. I hate to say it, but the end was simply awful. It was wrapped up with such brevity and simplicty that it felt like watching the last five minutes of a cheap soap opera.

One of the hardest things for a writer to do is make the story believable and engrossing. Ms. Brown succeeds! A twisted tale of love, needs and murder. Read more

Billy Ray's name on the photo?
Ditto! I thought I had missed something too. I have thought about it and come up with, maybe Covey gave Kristen the name of a distant relative (Billy Ray) that she could go and stay with to escape from her parents but that doesn't really explain what Billy Ray's actual connection was to the... Read more
