4.0 out of 5 stars Great power for good can become great power for evil, February 27, 2011
This review is from: Onslaught Volume 4: Eye of the Storm (X-Men) (Fantastic Four) (Avengers) (Marvel Comics) (Paperback)
Strong heroes need to do battle with strong villains or the story is dull. In this case Onslaught is the embodiment of Professor Charles Xavier, the founder of the X-Men and the strongest telepath on Earth. Capable of taking control of minds, Onslaught has sent the Hulk to destroy Cable, a good hero that stands in Onslaught's way.
Storm intervenes to save Cable and in combination they are able to break the hold that Onslaught has on the Hulk and turn him back into an ally. A mighty armada of super heroes then launches an assault on Onslaught but is rebuffed. The evil Apocalypse, archenemy of Cable, offers to join the fight against Onslaught, for the very existence of the world is at stake. Onslaught has also taken the young Franklin Richards, son of Reed and Sue Richards hostage and Sue is desperate to win his freedom. The Watcher also makes an appearance, although he is forbidden to interfere in any way. Nevertheless, his presence is an indication of how dire the situation is. Cable and Apocalypse temporarily cease their hostilities and launch a joint attack against Onslaught.
Even with such might arrayed against him, Onslaught is undaunted, willing to stand against his mighty foes in combat, on Earth and in the astral plane. The issue is not resolved in this book, at best it can be said that the two forces battle to a draw.
For many years, Professor Charles Xavier was depicted as a powerful mutant that was only a force for good. In this case, he turns into an evil being, allowing for the storylines to be taken in a radically new direction. I enjoyed the story; it is refreshing to see the polarity of the characters reversed once in a while.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's Readable, but not much else, November 25, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Onslaught Volume 4: Eye of the Storm (X-Men) (Fantastic Four) (Avengers) (Marvel Comics) (Paperback)
Well Onslaught will perhaps forever be Marvel's most controversial storyline. I only gave this chapter three stars because it focuses on the Hulk's side of the war with the mad mutant. Peter David tried as much as he could, to make the Hulk chapter of the Onslaught war, interesting and he mostly succeeds. The Hulk takes part in the battle, but he somewhat regards this whole affair as a waste of his time. I wonder if that's how Peter thought of it too?
