I have been pleased from the moment I bought the RAT model 1. Excellent fit and finish. Easy to open. Locks up tight--with a very positive snap. The AUS-8 blade holds its edge. I have touched it up occasionally with a small steel and it is as sharp as it was the day out of the box--which was sharp in deed.

I have large hands so the handle is a nice fit. The jibbing on the back of the blade is aggressive enough for a good grip, but not so aggressive as to take skin off of my thumb. The blade is large with a nice geometry. You either like the line of the handle and blade or you don't. I have found it to be very functional and comfortable. It has become my EDC. It may be a little large for some, but I haven't had any issues to date.

I like the four point option for the clip. I prefer right side, tip up.

I like the knife enough that I bought one for my brother-in-law for Christmas. This is high praise since I consider him more of a brother than a brother-in-law. We won't buy junk for each other. He has been very impressed with the knife. He is left handed and appreciates the ambidextrous nature of the Model 1.

Excellent value--affordable, well made, functional, durable, easy to carry and deploy. I have considered purchasing a 2nd one for my BOB.

This Ontario knife is a classic with a great reputation, and rightly so. Rugged blade comes razor sharp out of the box, the build and fit and finish are all excellent. It's a beautiful tank of a knife.
Ideal hard-use knife for outdoors, camping, hiking, etc. Pocket clip works great and although not a small knife if rides low in the pocket and does not protrude.
Large (5 inch long) handle gives as much grip for your hand as if it was a fixed blade knife, and for most people that will be a good thing. Great ergonomics. Very fine checkering on the Nylon handle (scales) does not catch or abrade on your pockets.
Other reviewers point out that the black finish option available for the blade is prone to chipping and scratching, so the bright silver metal option on this knife for many is the way to go.
This version is partly serrated. It's also available in an all-straight-blade version.

An iconic knife from a solid company, made in Taiwan, and a real value at the price. You can pay a lot more for any of the currently fashionable designer-brand knives and not have any more utility than with the original RAT (which stands for "Randall's Adventure Training"; Randall designed the RAT knife and Ontario makes it under license. Randall has his own interesting website and a line of knives, both made by Ontario and others.

Note: this knife is not a 'flipper' and not spring-assisted. You have to manually open it with the thumb studs on the blade. Mine came pretty stiff out of the box and required a little oil to loosen up, after which it was fine and opens very smoothly.
Ontario offers a lifetime warranty. This same exact knife is available in about a 30% smaller version sold as the 'Ontario Rat II', same qualitiy and features just a smaller version.

Amazing sturdy knife at an excellent price! Solid construction. See Nutnfancy's review on youtube. I can't say it any better than that.

This knife is an all time favorite out of several (American made but higher cost) kershaws, bucks, and spydercos, this is the perfect large utility knife. I've seen comments about the scales lacking quality, the texture is definitely smoother than a typical g10 scale, but the feel and look is almost identical to g10 which was very pleasantly surprising. It's not a light knife, but it locks up nice and solid, liner locks right in the middle of the tang. Blade and serrations were extremely sharp out of the box. I bought this knife along with a kershaw piston. The action on the rat is about as quick and smooth as the kershaw piston, which is a spring assisted knife. The action is unbelievable for a 30 dollar knife, grabbing a second.

It's large, hefty, has reinforced nylon handles, and steel liners with an AUS8 flat ground blade with partial serrations. It honestly doesn't get much better of a work knife for under $30. You can put this knife through it's paces and it'll try to outrun you on most occasions. The flat grind makes it SO easy to resharpen and hone, I can shave with mine after a good stropping and that was from the factory.

Tell your Spyderco Tenacious to kick rocks and make way, the Rat-1 is coming through!

Other than that, excellent service, fast delivery, very happy with my purchase and that's pretty much what matters.

For the money this knife ROCKS!! Solid frame, simple and sturdy release and hold. It's big but I like that! The handle to me is comfortable in my hand and the blade is sharp. If you like knives add one to your collection you won't be sorry.
I like the 4 positional belt clip (but one gotcha is the bolt size it's SMALL had to dig in the ol'e tin can of old allen wrenches that come with all the small stuff I buy to find a fit).
This knife is made in Taiwan (that is unusual for Ontario most of their knives are made in the USA) but the quality is good.
The metal is AUS- 8. I think for my uses it's ok.
