The best,

This review is from: Ontario Knife 1-18 Outdoor Survival Machete, Fixed Blade Knife with 18" Zinc Phosphate Steel Blade, & Shatterproof Polymer Handle, Overall Length 23.25" (Misc.)
The Ontario military machete is the best I have ever used. I am a surveyor and use it a lot. It holds great edge and it does not bend or flex. Whether you are just clearing a little brush or taking down a 6 or 7 inch hardwood this tool will be your best friend.

This Machete is as close to Military issue as you are gonna get. WHy do I say that? well the Military gets there blades of all kinds from Gerber, and Mostly Ontario. Ontario blades knifes machetes, what ever you buy from them you cannot go wrong. Dont spend butt-loads of money buying a popular name brand. Beleive me,.. stick with whats been battle tested and Military approved and you'll never go wrong. this machete is great,.. I ordered this product for my brother seeing that he loved my ARMY Issue Ont. 18' Mach. There is no difference between the two of them except the handle. This handle (the one being reveiwed) is an updated version of the one that I have, this one the handle is more solid and will resist cracking and breaking. However the handle was not as round? as mine. I'll try to explain,.. when you are holding the machete where your fingers and thumb meet you can feel that instead of it being rounded,... its got just a hint of a smoothed corner. This I guess isnt really a problem, but its the only thing I could find different from my own.
Any questions that you guys may have about gear,.. dont hesitate to write a letter to me. I know alot about ARMY gear and practices.

I have had one of these for seven years it is the best money can buy. Unlike the cheapos that fall apart after a few minutes use, this one will last a lifetime.

I had been looking for a good machete for chopping down small trees (or downed logs) when off-roading. This is not a poorly made machete that you'd find in an outdoors retail store. The handle is made of a strong plastic (not a bad thing), and it is very sturdy.
I have no problem cutting through logs 6 inches in diameter, you just have to keep hitting it. The blade is very sharp and has no problem cutting through 2 inch branches in one good swing.

I'm a surveyor in texas, and use these machetes everyday. These blades hold a great edge. They cut vine's, small branches, or large tree's. It's military issue, and they don't use low quality products. If you wan't a quality machete, this is it. Be prepared to put a good edge on it, they are very dull from the factory.

It's good but not great. Holds an edges so-so. For the price when stacked up against whatever else you can get for this price, it's the best you can get. Don't expect to be blown away by this thing. It will serve it's purpose.

As purely a machete, this is the best one that I have ever seen. The weight is perfect; it's heavy, but not sledgehammer poundage where you need to put weight into it to get it going. The blade is thick, you would have to be purposely trying to destroy it while doing something other than a chopping motion to bend it. The handle is well formed and securely laid onto the hanle, but it could use some texturing. The sharpness is mild, which is perfect for most brush machetes; it still cuts right through 1" and 2" limbs without much of a speed decrease.
The only con that I have is the name compared to the product. I don't think that a knife this big would be considered a survival knife. If they wanted a knife this big and still wanted the title, they could put a saw on the back side for additional functionality which wouldn't change the design very much. If you're in the rainforest, you might want a knife this big but you still wouldn't want to carry it around everywhere. There isn't a sheath with this item so something would have to be put together to keep from carrying it or to safely put it in a hiking pack.

This machete has survived many camping trips and seems to be ready for many more. It's a bit heavy for backpacking (intended purpose), but the quality makes up for the extra weight. The steel is of good quality and the black (powder?) coating has a couple of sap stains but no wear-throughs.
I needed a machete (beats stuff down, makes paths) and not a sword (cuts through stuff). That said it does a fair job of cutting. I've never sharpened it past how it came, but it looks like the steel would hold a wicked edge if you so chose.

This knife is a good general all around user. Light enough to swing all day in light brush. Not heavy enough for anything over 1" in dia. Great unbreakable handle.

I bought this machete to compliment a Woodman's Pal that I already own. The Woodman's Pal is stouter and better suited to woody stems. The machete is longer and lighter and works better on grasses and green stems.
I have found the handle of the machete to be small for my hands in both diameter and length. I have large hands and usually wear size large gloves. I wrapped the handle in paracord to provide a larger diameter grip. The machete is all black and is a rather intimidating tool if that's what you're looking for. I'm sure that it will help me keep the undergrowth whacked down on our acreage property. |
