Product Description

The Ontario Knife Spec Plus Gen II series of outdoor survival knives was designed strictly for function. These full-tang historically based knives are water jet cut from tough 5160 steel to deliver a durable, easy to sharpen edge. Situated in New York State's scenic Southern Tier, Ontario Knife Company produces one of the most comprehensive, wide-ranging product lines in the cutlery industry today. While being a worldwide supplier, the Ontario Knife Company is also a major supplier to the U.S. Government and its military. Ontario has built its reputation on a heritage of uncompromising craftsmanship, quality materials and components, and a steadfast commitment to its workforce. Black textured and powder coated steel blades prevent rusting or scratching. Full tang blades are hardened to 53-55 HRC. Kraton handle resists the elements and has finger grooves for a secure grip. Piped lanyard hole in handle. Includes nylon sheath.

OK, I bought the knife 3 months ago and let me be the fisrt to say that this knife rocks! Great steel, well manufactured and it is a very useful tool. The design makes it perfect for batoning through wood. The "Kukri" like blade makes it an even better chopper than the SP50 or its many SP GEN II brothers.
The downfal and the reason it got a thumb down and only 3 stars? The sheath is such a piece of doo-doo that it broke on me the first day of real use. The knife was in my hand and I leaned up against a log. I heard a crunch. Evidently, Ontario utilizes a cheap, brittle piece of plastic inside the nylon sheath to keep the sharp blade from cutting through the nylon. I turned the sheath upside down and splinters of the inside fell out of it. USELESS!!!
Of course I was plenty upset after spending $100 on the knife. After all, what good is a great knife if you have to leave it at home and have no safe way to carry it.
I called Ontario and being the good folks that they really are, they sent me another crappy sheath for free. The new problem is that this sheath showed up already cracked.
Ontario makes some great products but they seem to be failing us on every sheath that they send out, that is made in this fashion. Heck, I would have paid more if the could have delivered on a useful product. What do I mean? The knife is useless unless you intend on keeping this tool in the shop and need no way of sefely transporting this into rugged areas (as most people would). It would be worth even more to me if they could complete the package with a decent sheath.

I added this knife or small machete to my camping pack. It does not add too much weight. I can process medium to small wood for shelter or fire.

This machete handles great! I love it! Very well made and balanced! Works better and safer if you use the lanyard.
