I seem to be on an endless mission to find the perfect carrier, and every few months a new carrier comes out that screams" you need Me!!". I've considered the Bjorn Miracle, the Britax, the Baby Hawk oh Snap, and finally settled on the Onya.
The price isn't cheap, but we Moms make our carriers pay. Somedays I carry my son for 4 to 5 hrs straight. My perfect carrier must be waterproof, large enough to keep my growing boy from falling out, have pockets for metrocard, pockets for wallet, for diapers and some wipes. Have a D ring for my keys, large fitted hood for all the elements.
LoL, that is what the Onya outback offers. Then there is still the conversion into a baby seat. The concept is simple. Strap the carrier onto any chair with a backing, pull out the seating from its own zippered pocket adjust and snap your child in. Awesome!!!
My package came in yesterday. I've tried this on both my boys..my oldest is 5, weights 45lbs. The little guy is 25lbs. It was comfortable for them as it was for me. I carried my little one today for 2 hrs and my shoulders are fine. I hardly feel any weight. No complaints.....I feel we have invested wisely.
all our carriers were great for a specific period of our baby's life. the beco butterfly is wonderful for a newborn infant and we love the way our son was snuggled in it and how we can change who carries him without taking him out of the carrier. the cotton is supersoft and it's a very well made carrier. unfortunately it doesn't have any pockets.
the ergo is worth its reputation as probably the best and most versatile carrier out there. the shoulder straps are super-padded and i can carry my little one around for a long time. i like that he can see everything coz of the lower back. what i didn't like is that the buckles for the shoulder straps are pretty high and so the straps make it difficult for my baby to stretch his arms comfortably.
the onya doesn't have that problem. the buckles are very low and the child has lots of room. the waist belt must be the most comfortable out there, it's wonderfully sturdy. the shoulder straps are still a little stiff and probably need to be broken in. the fabric is very soft and breathable. the leg openings are also padded - why did none of the other carrier manufacturers ever think of that? the back is very high, my one year old can just about look over it. for a younger baby this might be a little boring, but it also means excellent head support. the whole carrier feels roomy and wide and therefore seems to distribute the baby's weight perfectly, even better than in the other carriers. i carried my son around for 3 hours the first time without getting tired.
throw in the mix that the onya is waterproof, has a built-in seat (another great idea!) and also looks really great. fabulous carrier!!!
I also own an Ergo and a Tula. The Tula especially is higher-end, and they've both been great for me. But my baby is now a toddler at 16 months and 25 lbs. I could instantly tell a difference in comfort and support when I put him in the Onya. The Onya feels so strong and supportive. I honestly prefer it over my other carriers. Plus, this will breathe so much better than canvass carriers in hot weather, and take much less time to line-dry in the humidity.
Regarding the back carry: I know many people like to put the waist strap under their bra line for a high back carry. I've discovered that I like to put the waist strap right on top of my hips. My toddler is tall enough, and it distributes his weight much more comfortably that way. At first, I was a little overwhelmed by the two adjustable straps on each side: one for your shoulders, and one for the baby's seat. But I've played with them and now appreciate the freedom in adjusting things. Usually I like his bum pulled close to me, since letting him sag puts more strain on my shoulders.Read more ›
Super comfortable to wear, the shoulder straps are well padded, and I liked having the option to wear the shoulder straps criss-cross or straight. I have used this a handful of times for my nearly 3 month old who is a big baby (now 8kg and growing!) and can already hold his head up - but it does advise you use this from 4 months.
Allows baby to sit 'frog-legged' position, which is how they should naturally sit - I've tried other carriers with a crotch so narrow making the babies legs dangle.
Built in 'high chair' is very useful.
Has a hood for sun protection is a bonus - when living in the desert, and a couple small zip pockets for keys & cash.
I like the neutral colour (not too 'girly' looking for husband to wear, lol) and its very easy to clean.
On the expensive side, but its a good quality product overall.

Breathable and comfortable. I don't love the back carry because the straps are a little awkward if you don't have wider shoulders. Read morePublished 23 days ago by Hannah Tatum
I'm so sad not to like this. I researched and researched, and thought this looked awesome. I tried to wear it a number of times, and both me and my kiddo found it uncomfortable. Read morePublished 1 month ago by Beth
I can only post about how it fits without baby as we got this a little before our baby is here. I'm 6' 2" and weigh almost 260 and it fits around me with room to spare. Read morePublished 1 month ago by Davinchy
