5.0 out of 5 stars ooh la la, I'm in love!
Maira Kalman is wonderful. I totally fell in love with this book. I shared it with the first graders that I tutor and they adored the zany illustrations and blushed when Max fell for the lovely Crepes Suzette. It was also a great way to introduce a little french culture. They were totally facinated and asked me to find more Max books. Please don't pass this one by...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for children really, very busy word wise.
I odered this book and will now return it. It does not seem to be for children. Maybe older children, middle school and up. The book did not keep my attention I had to force myself to read it.

Please don't pass this one by because some of the vocab may be difficult for kids to understand. The illustrations are the most amazing that I've ever seen. Both kids and adults alike will be enthralled.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite book ever, February 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ooh-la-la (Max in Love) (Hardcover)
Everyone needs a copy of this insanely splendid book. Kids will love poring over the infinitely perusable pictures and absorbing the exuberant joie de vivre of it all and adults will savor the language. "Alors, I must run. My souffle is sinking."

5.0 out of 5 stars Our whole family loves this book!, June 12, 2001

It's just like a clever movie for kids that is aimed at the younger set but also includes lots of "inside jokes" for the parents. Other reviewers said it's too wordy for kids. My kids, though, have their own favorite lines. They say them right along with me when I read. I'm always happy when they pull a Max book off their crowded bookshelf. I finish reading with a smile on my face, and with my kids cuddled up next to me to see the pictures (a nice benefit on a chilly North Dakota night).

5.0 out of 5 stars everyone is part dog...and max & suzette are part everyone.., April 11, 1997

This review is from: Ooh-la-la (Max in Love) (Hardcover)
this book rocks your world. Maira is a beauteous creator ofdream-color-scenes. A word-art-poet and a (dog)breath of freshair...the best is "max deluxe" (which includes all the max stories(3) but the latest India adventure). I highly recommend this to any age (i am 28) and actually the older the better, because the creative-refreshness that these books offer is the stuff that kindergarteners (and dogs) already possess and that older humans long for. remind your SELF what life is truly about. use these books as your guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ooh-la-la!, April 6, 1999

This poetic book is just one of the many things that expresses Maira Kalman's genious. I love Max's poetry, the symbolizm of what he writes. I have read this book millions of times, and each time I stop to read every little word on the page where a man has wrote poems all over the street, and to look at every little picture. Exquisite work!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Tout Paris is abuzz. Max is here!", January 21, 2002
This review is from: Ooh-la-la (Max in Love) (Hardcover)
Max is in Paris, the city of light and romance, to see the sights and maybe, just maybe find his heart's delight. "...Who is Max??? Mon dieu! Sacre Bleu! He is the coolest cat, I mean the hottest dog. He is Max Stravinsky. The dog poet from New York. That Bohemian beagle..." He stays at the little hotel run by the "aromatic" Madame Camembert, and tours the city, visiting the Louvre, Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower, the parks, boulevards and cafes. He eats, he drinks, and takes French lessons from Charlotte Russe. And he walks and walks, meeting a quirky cast of original characters, always looking for love..."It was April after all." He's invited out to the Crazy Wolf Nightclub by owner Pierre Potpourri, to hear the incomparable pianist, Crepes Suzette, and it is there he finds his "raison d'etre", the dog he's been looking for his entire life..... Maira Kalman has authored an ingeniously inventive and entertaining picture book classic, starring the ever-endearing Max, that truly stands alone in a class by itself. Her witty and creative text, part French, part English, begs to be read aloud, and is full of clever rhymes, wordplay and puns, and complemented by her intricately detailed and expressive artwork. Children and adults alike will enjoy poring over the pages, always finding something new and intriguing everytime they open the book. Ooh-La-La (Max In Love) is a masterpiece that will be enjoyed by "children" of all ages, from 5 to 95, and a book to be treasured and shared with friends and family now, and in the many years to come. This is Maira Kalman at her very best. Make sure you get your copy now!

5.0 out of 5 stars So you think you're an artist..., January 11, 2003

Toom (Brooklyn, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ooh-la-la (Max in Love) (Hardcover)
Max, starry-eyed romantic poet, goes to Paris where everything is absurd and wonderful, like watching Salvador Dali's clocks tick forward, backward, and melt into eternity on funky mushrooms. Swanky, smart, and just plain bizarre, this book is suitable for everyone with a twist. It made me laugh. It made me cry. My honey goes wild every time I read it aloud in my wretched French accent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ooh-la-la c'est magnifique, October 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ooh-la-la (Max in Love) (Hardcover)
Ohh-la-la is one of the most wonderfully interesting and entertaining children's books I have read. I was first introduced to this story in a children's lit class while in college. The entire class was amazed by the fresh thought, wonderful play of words, and visual presentation. While the vocab can be difficult--some of which is in French--it is so well written that stumbling through it is half the fun. I would highly recommend this work to anyone who loves Paris, poetry, or any of Kalman's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book for all ages, February 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I started reading this book for my son before he was one. He loved the colourful pictures and had fun as I was having fun reading it out loud. I could not get enough of it and recommend it to all adults who prefer reading something entertaining rather than books that makes you yawn and wish reading time was over. It does help if you enjoy playing with French although understanding it is not necessary.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is my 2 year olds favorite book!, November 11, 2010
I bought this book at a second hand stall because I liked the pictures, but I thought is was way too old for my little girl. I was wrong ... it's now her favorite book & I only hope the others by Maria Kalman are as good because I've just ordered them from Amazon for Christmas! I like the comment on the back of the book by her piano teacher ... very funny
