5.0 out of 5 stars He's come a long way since the computer went on the fritz., March 29, 2009
This review is from: Oohs & Aahs (Audio CD)
Elouise - With a subtle chorus, lyrics akin to "Pop Music of the Future," and almost (I stress "almost") sing-song verses, it's a solid way to open the sixth album.

Hallie and Henry - Some pounding drums and wavy synths start this upbeat tune. The chorus is one of the fastest on any Say Hi record; you can tell Eric's having fun on this one.

Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh - This is by far one of the strangest songs in Mr. Elbogen's repertoire, mainly because of the goofy horns. The chorus is insanely catchy.

November Was White, December Was Grey - The first slow track on the album, its beautifully simple lyrics make this one of my favorite tracks. Think of it as a sort of sequel to "Blizzard."

Dramatic Irony - This is darkly sinister, both lyrically and musically. The chorus is a simple repetition of "get 'em (uh huh)" and Eric sings of "the big thing" that's "gonna take off their heads."

Maurine - The horns that open this track are like sparkly, slowed down versions of the ones on Oh Oh Oh. Some of the most beautiful singing since "Snowcones and Puppies," though unfortunately there's little of it. One of my new favorite lyrics: "But Maurine, I can't come to your party 'cause I think that I'm dead."

One Two... One - Handclaps! What starts as a poppy dance tune quickly darkens into a, well, much less poppy dance tune.

Audrey - Short and just a bit too sweet to be bittersweet.

The Stars Just Blink for Us - It's got piano, shakers, and a simple beat. This song is overflowing with cute and plainly romantic lyrics.

Sallie's Heart is Stone - A change of pace as a closing track. Slow and haunting.

Personal favorites:
-November Was White, December Was Grey
-Dramatic Irony
-The Stars Just Blink for Us
-Sallie's Heart is Stone

Overall, it's much darker and more mature than his previous work, but there's still a lot of lo-fi pop sensibility fans have come to love. If you're new to Say Hi, I suggest getting "Numbers & Mumbles" (as Say Hi To Your Mom) before this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic, April 4, 2009
This review is from: Oohs & Aahs (Audio CD)
I've listened to something like 90 albums in the past year and this is in my top 5 for sure.

There's not a wasted sound on this whole album. It's concise, to the point, to the hook, while changing up base genres and sounds. It's inherently noise pop, but there are some really stellar guitar riffs mixed in. And the singer doesn't have the kind of voice that makes every song sound the same. So there you go. It's good. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic album, July 22, 2009
This review is from: Oohs & Aahs (Vinyl)
I recently downloaded a sampler album from Amazon, and the song 'Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh' was on it. This was the best song on the sampler, so I purchased the album. What a pleasant surprise! I found that I really like every song on the album. This seems to be a rarity for me anymore. I have found that I am listening to this album over and over, and still enjoying the great rhythms and vocals. Can't say enough about 'Oohs & Aahs'!

4.0 out of 5 stars I'd say it's their second best album.
I liked the album. The songs off of this album were better live than those off of other albums, so maybe they were going for something less studio polished.

Heard these guys on a local radio station and got their CD. It's really good! Glad I got it. :)
