4.0 out of 5 stars Stupid Book?

3.0 out of 5 stars I don't know why he loves these, but he does
My son is nuts for David. I have no idea why. But hey, he's two. This is ultra simplistic -- pretty much one word per page. I end up doing a lot of ad-libbing and talking about the other things in the illustrations. And even though I think the David character is oddly drawn, the scenes really are cute. In one illustration, David dumps mac 'n cheese onto the family dog, a...

The number of words is not the issue. The children reading or being read to must make the connections between the few words and the actions / emotions they see on the page. It is about finding meaning by connecting their own experiences / understanding with that of the character. It is not about having the big ideas of each book fed to you through text.

Try it out yourself sometime...you'd probably be less likely to make the review you did and maybe be able to answer the questions you posed in the process.

Shannon's books are just fine...and rhyming isn't a prerequisite for a children's book =)

5.0 out of 5 stars I don't know what it is about David books..., August 28, 2006
This review is from: Oops! (A Diaper David Book) (Board book)
There is something special about David books. Maybe it is the simplicity of the words but my 1 year old son is absolutely in love with them. He has four of them and always reaches for the David books over any other book that he has. He has tons of them too that have been passed down from siblings. They basically have just a couple of words on each page and you read them in about 20 seconds but the pictures add life to the short story. My son will sit and flip through these books on his own throughout the day. He gets a kick out of these.

I end up doing a lot of ad-libbing and talking about the other things in the illustrations. And even though I think the David character is oddly drawn, the scenes really are cute. In one illustration, David dumps mac 'n cheese onto the family dog, a Westie, from his high chair. That cracks us up, as my son has dropped mac 'n cheese on our Westie more times than I can count. If you're looking for a book that will help you build up your child's vocabulary, this probably isn't the one. But if your child has already been bitten by the "David" bug, he or she will love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book!, July 13, 2005

The No David books and Diaper David books all have very few words on the pages, but this is why they are so great! This gives you a great opportunity to talk with your child about what the boy is doing and interact with your child about what you are reading and seeing. My 14 month old daughter loves all of these books, especially when I get silly and point out things in the picture that the boy did. I am also a school teacher. I have taught kindergarten and 1st grade and David Shannon's, "No David" series are always their favorite books to read. Especially when you interact with the children and not only read the word on the page.

5.0 out of 5 stars a "sticky" book, March 19, 2007

There are some kids books that really "stick" for kids. They get emotionally involved in the art and they love the story. Oops! is that book for my daughter. In her two years of life, we've probably read this book hundreds of times. Now she "reads" the ten words herself. (Ten words is just right for her to "read", and it was just, just right to read to her when she was a newborn.) Love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly compelling, February 27, 2006
This review is from: Oops! (A Diaper David Book) (Board book)
With just a word per page, I didn't think my two and three year olds would appreciate the books, but I bought two David board books anyway after a friend recommended them. I'm surprised how much the kids LOVE the books. I read them over and over, and the kids love each calamity on each page. When the macaroni spills on the dog, they insist it's just like our dog. They name all the kinds of food David has on his face when he eats. It's an engaging book despite it's simplicity and prompts good conversations.

David Shannon's books are easy to read and understand. My 3 y/o grandson, named David, just loves "his" David book series. Highly recommend them!

My eleven month old daughter studies this book with alarming intensity! This is always one of the first ones she picks out to read. And it's one that I can read to both her and my 3.5 year old, and that he can read to her.

5.0 out of 5 stars My grandson loved the book. He loves all books by David Shannon., August 24, 2007
This review is from: Oops! (A Diaper David Book) (Board book)
As a teacher of kindergarten children; I have been reading David Shannon's books for a few years. Out of all the books I read to them , their favorite is NO David, by David Shannon. My boys especially love the page where David runs down the street in his "birthday suit".My grandson really liked Oops!

This review is from: Oops! (A Diaper David Book) (Board book)
I got this book right before my son was born and thought that it was odd with the few words, but my son loves it!! Since he was able to choose the books he wants to read, he would always choose this one...even at 2 years old!! He is also able to read the book to me now!! He gets a kick out of that! I would recommend this book to everyone!
