Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2. Preston Pig, from Suddenly! (1995) and Boo! (1996, both Harcourt), returns with his lupine sidekick to delight audiences once again. McNaughton has revamped "Little Red Riding Hood" with Preston's perfectly timed clumsiness and Mr. Wolf's forgetful memory. When the wolf observes the pig being sent off to visit Granny, he says, "Hmm...red hood, basket of food, Granny's house? That reminds me of a story, but which one?" He finally remembers his role and jumps through Grandma's window, ties her up, and pops Preston into a sack. As Mr. Wolf wonders about how the story ends, a turn of the page reveals Preston's father, holding a gleaming ax. The fast-paced text is sure to grab the attention of listeners. The oversized artwork, with its exaggerated features, is a feast for the eyes, bursting with a successful combination of fine detail and comic relief. Pair it with Lisa Campbell Ernst's Little Red Riding Hood: A Newfangled Prairie Tale (S & S, 1995), Ed Young's Lon Po Po (Philomel, 1989), and a traditional "Red" of your choice for a storytime that's sure to please.?Lisa Marie Gangemi, Sousa Elementary School, Port Washington, NY

4.0 out of 5 stars Oops!, July 15, 2000
By A Customer
We got Suddenly! for my three boys (ages 8,6, and 3) and they loved it. So they were really excited when we got them Oops!

Colin McNaughton's stories are so successful because you get to yell when you read them. My boys like loud fun books.

We really enjoyed Oops! The boys said it could have used a few more yelling parts (there aren't as many as in Suddenly!) but they enjoyed the humor and have added it to their list of favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great spoof with no moral, July 16, 2005
This review is from: Oops!: A Preston Pig Story (Paperback)
Four to eight year olds will love this Preston Pig book. We fell in love with it when my son was age 5. He adored reading about "Cunning Wolf Trick No.s 1,2, and 3" and still loves to recite them. An advanced picture book that doesn't talk down to kids or parents and is still fun to read.
